Summer Experiences
Chapter 1
Corey’s head leans against the car window as he tunes out his father and mother’s conversation about the family’s plans for the summer. It’s the first day of summer vacation and the family is heading to their brand new lake house. Corey is wishing that they would have just stayed home. He wanted to spend the summer with his friends and get ready for the football season in the fall. He had been agonizing about getting himself back in peak physical form for the season after the injury that cost him to not play most of his last season. Thinking back on the game that caused the injury, his thoughts turn angry. It was a normal play. He as the team’s star quarterback had dropped back, scanning the field for an open receiver. It happened so quickly. He was blindsided by one of the other team’s linebackers. As he fell to the ground, he heard a snap in his shoulder, and was met with immediate pain. The trainers told him that he would not likely play another snap that season and the resulting surgery made sure of that as his shoulder had been severely torn, and he had to get it repaired. He had been working hard to get his arm back to the place that it needed to be for his senior season. He had scouts that he needed to impress as his future depended on it. Before the injury, he had been the top quarterback in the state, having led his team to a state championship in his sophomore year. Many schools wanted to recruit him, but with his shoulder, some had reservations. He had to go to college. He had to play college ball so he could go to the pro’s. Everything hinged on this year, and as he stared outside the window at the passing scenery, the music from his headphones trying to soothe his fears, Corey was hoping that he would be ready for when the time came to prove to everybody just how much he mattered.
Mason had it all. He was tall, and handsome. He was the most popular kid in school and liked by everybody. He was the best linebacker on his team and colleges were highly recruiting him. He had a good head on his shoulders, good grades, good friends and a great family. His family was one that everyone wanted to have. Parents that loved each other dearly and made sure that their only son had everything that he could ever need. His father, being a very successful lawyer had met his mother, being a successful doctor had met in college and fell in love. Mason was happy with the way his life was going. He was looking forward to relaxing this last summer before graduation. It was the last summer he would have to enjoy just being a teenager before he would have to meet the responsibilities of the adult world. His father had taken a break from work for the summer and wanted to give the family a nice vacation from the city life they had become so accustomed to. He had gotten a lake house in a town close to the city just in case his father had to go work a case during the summer. Mason was eager to stretch his legs after the journey to the lake house and get some fresh air. One thing that Mason was looking forward to this summer was to have as much fun as possible. He didn’t know that he would also meet someone this summer that would change his life forever. You see, Mason had almost everything that he wanted in life, except for somebody to share in his happiness. He had had flings here and there, but nobody was serious. He wanted to find somebody new. Somebody that would understand him and not think of him as just the star football player that everyone knows and likes. He wanted a change.
Corey got out of the car and stretched his legs after the journey that he had. The lake house was a couple of hours away from where his family had lived ever since they had come back from England when Corey was 7. Corey was born in the United States, but had lived between London and Paris as his parents’ careers had flourished in Europe. They had decided to move to the United States permanently to give Corey the best life they could give him. His father, Adam, an English rugby star had met his mother, Samantha, an American singer at a restaurant 20 years ago and had fallen in love very quickly. Love for Corey had always been something to admire, as his parents loved each other with such a fierce intensity that they almost never argued or had a fight. They also made sure to give Corey all the love that he could ever need. It was this love that Corey wanted to have in his life as he grew up. Corey grew into a great person. He was a very popular kid in school, but also a kind person. He was always volunteering his time to help others and to be a good friend to all those he met. The one thing that he always wanted, however, was the one thing that seemed to always elude him. Corey was different, than most, whenever it came to love. He could tell he was a different soul from about the time he was in middle school. He was assured by his parents when he came home one day, crying because he realized that he liked both boys and girls, that love would always find the way to speak the heart’s true desires. All he had to do was listen. It was these thoughts that gave him some hope for what the summer would hold for him. He hoped that this summer would be a good one.
