Chapter Text
all of the members have beautiful singing voices, but there’s something about yunjin’s voice that makes you feel warm and fuzzy. even though you’re constantly listening to her sing, you find yourself craving her voice while at home. yunjin does occasionally break out into song while walking to another room or doing the dishes. but it’s brief and usually silly or exaggerated.
it takes a long time for you work up the courage to ask her to sing to you.
you are fully aware that yunjin is a trained opera singer, but it didn’t occur to you until recently that she would be familiar with the phantom of the opera. when you watched her performance of “think of me” on lee mujin service, you teared up. she sang it beautifully, as to be expected of yunjin. that song means so much to you and reminds you of your mother. your heart aches thinking about home.
restless nights are a common occurrence for each of the members (and for most idols in general). tonight is particularly difficult for you. no matter what you do, you find it impossible to sleep. insomnia always strikes at the most inopportune times - you have an early morning schedule and you have to be ready by 6:30am. it’s already nearing 1am. you’re getting frustrated, tears prickling at the corners of your eyes as you toss and turn trying to find a comfortable position. you know it’s fruitless, however. you just can’t get your mind to turn off.
you’re getting desperate at this point. you’ll do anything to sleep. so you haul yourself out of bed and make your way to yunjin’s room. you feel like a terrible person for waking her, considering she also has to get up early, but you don’t know what else to do.
you knock lightly, waiting for a response. when there is none, you gingerly open her door. she’s out cold. you rethink your plan, not wanting to disturb her peaceful slumber, but she surprises you by stirring, moving so that she’s facing the doorway in which you stand. she cracks open her eyes and squints at your silhouette. “y/n?” her voice is slightly raspy from a lack of use.
“sorry. yeah, it’s me. i didn’t want to wake you up, i’m just…. sorry, please go back to sleep.”
yunjin sits up in bed as you start to shut the door, still trying to orient herself. “no, wait - y/n. it’s okay, really. you can come in.”
you stop, unsure of yourself. at her expectant gaze, you finally slip into the room and shut the door quietly behind you. yunjin scoots to the other side of her queen-sized bed and beckons you over by patting the mattress. “come here, y/n-ie. what’s going on? is everything okay?”
you will your feet to move from where you stand awkwardly, finally making your way toward yunjin. you sit beside her with one leg on the bed and the other hanging off the side, but avert your eyes in shame. “i’m sorry again for waking you. i couldn’t sleep, and i thought maybe...” you glance up at her and are met with concern and curiosity. it almost makes you feel worse. “i don’t know. it’s stupid and selfish.”
“hey,” yunjin says softly. she reaches out to hold one of your hands, squeezing it reassuringly. “it’s not stupid or selfish. having trouble sleeping is a very real struggle, and i’m happy that you felt like you could come to me for help. now what is it that i can do for you? do you want to cuddle?”
suddenly you feel incredibly bashful, looking away once again to compose yourself. the offer was genuine, but yunjin can’t help but smile softly at your reaction. she rubs her thumb across your knuckles encouragingly. “that, that might help, yes. but, i was going to ask if maybe…. fuck, this is so embarrassing. maybe you could… sing to me?” you cringe as the words leave your lips.
you wait in anticipation for her response, fully expecting her to laugh in your face. surprisingly, yunjin beams at you and squeezes your hand tighter this time. “awww, y/n-ie, that’s so sweet,” she coos. “i’d be honored to sing you to sleep. any song? or was there one in particular you had in mind?”
you bite your lip, relieved to have gotten past the hardest part, but still nervous. “i really like it when you sing ‘think of me’ from the phantom of the opera. it’s a song that means a lot to me.” your voice is so soft that yunjin can barely make out what you’re saying.
“i can absolutely sing ‘think of me.’ now, do you want to lay down? or would you prefer it if i came to your room?” the way yunjin is treating you with so much care makes you want to cry. she appreciates how vulnerable you’re being with her and dares not to make you feel bad for it.
“if it’s okay with you, we can sleep here. but i wouldn’t want to intrude.”
your meekness is entirely out of character, and it breaks yunjin’s heart. you must be so exhausted and overwhelmed. “you’re never intruding, y/n-ie. you’re more than welcome to sleep here. after all, i love having the extra body heat on cold nights like these!” this elicits a smile from you, to which yunjin feels a sense of accomplishment.
you swing your other leg into the bed and scoot down with yunjin to get into a lying position. yunjin then pulls the covers over the both of you, checking to make sure you’re comfortable before turning on her side. she props her head up on her hand with her elbow planted on the mattress, hovering over you with a tender smile. you feel warm under her gentle gaze, looking up at her from where you’re lying on your back.
“close your eyes, okay?” yunjin murmurs softly.
you nod, already beginning to feel the weight of the exhaustion setting in as your eyes flutter shut. unexpectedly, you feel fingertips grazing your forehead. when they trail over the bridge of your nose, you realize yunjin is tracing your face. it takes everything in you not to sob like a baby.
finally, yunjin begins to sing quietly.
think of me, think of me fondly when we've said goodbye. remember me, once in a while. please promise me you'll try. when you find that once again you long to take your heart back and be free, if you ever find a moment, spare a thought for me.
you allow the sound her voice and her gentle touch to lull you to sleep. yunjin smiles to herself when she sees your chest rise and fall rhythmically as your breathing evens out. to be safe, she finishes singing the rest of the song while stroking your face. when she’s done, she leans down to place a chaste kiss on your forehead. “sweet dreams, y/n-ie.”
