Summary
What should I call myself? Lady Cherie Lock? Too obvious. A slip of the tongue and we’ll be exposed. Miss Constance Something or other?
Holmes caught sight of his reflection in the glass of the Reichenbach Falls picture above the fireplace. He tightened his lips, narrowed his eyes and sighed.
I can’t hide the family likeness. Madame Constance Asselin, younger sister to Sherlock and Mycroft, recently returned from the continent. Widowed, sadly. Husband was a musician.
Satisfied that his disguise was complete, Holmes… Madame Asselin perched on the edge of the settee to await the return of Dr. Watson.

“I’m so sorry to intrude on you. I’m Mr. Holmes’s friend and colleague. Our landlady isn’t here at the moment. I would be happy to light the fire for you.”He turned to the fireplace, annoyed with Holmes for leaving this poor lovely woman to fend for herself while he did God knows what. Sometimes Holmes just didn’t think about things like that. She had not spoken up yet, probably quite shy, and to be alone in a strange house with a strange man, well who wouldn’t be! He turned back to offer her some word of comfort and dropped the iron poker in shock at her expression.
The wicked little smile across her stunning features broke the illusion that he was looking at a stranger. That smile had been a faithful companion over the years, rewarding him after a case drawn to a successful conclusion and offering him gratitude and comfort in their most intimate moments.
“Holmes,” he said finally, his amazement at this transformation warring with his gentlemanly instinct to not gape at an attractive woman. He must have looked as ridiculous as he felt for Holmes grinned broadly and unfolded his hands in a little flourish.
“But this is extraordinary...” Watson stepped towards him and walked a slow semi-circle around the settee, admiring her– how else could he think of Holmes in this charming disguise– from head to toe.

Watson ground the heels of his hands into his eyes and took a deep, steadying breath. “Holmes, I—”“John.” Holmes used the voice he had perfected for Constance. “I can be both. For you, I can be Constance and Sherlock. Truthfully,” Holmes frowned and plucked at his petticoat fabric. “What started as simple curiosity has become an intriguing experiment. And, like all scientific endeavours, it has a conclusion.” He put his hands on Watson’s shoulders and pulled him into a warm embrace. “For you, my dear Watson, I will be Constance from time to time. We can dine in intimate corners of our favourite restaurants, attend theatre and opera, walk through parks hand in hand, or with your hand on my waist, and no one will disapprove of the handsome doctor and his lady. Constance will listen to your soft talk of love and reply as a smitten lady might.” He grinned wickedly. “But when you want a partner for a night of debauched buggery, Sherlock is assuredly your man.”
Overcome with gratitude, Watson returned the embrace. He had never imagined Holmes would be amenable to such things.
“And does Sherlock know,” he murmured against the other’s cheek, “that I am a man made helpless by my love for him? That he is my own dearest heart?”
