“We – I – am not asking you back as a pilot. Jean, you were one of the most experienced pilots in the program, and…” He began to whisper as if he was sharing a vital secret, even though the sound was exactly the same on Jean’s end, “We have a new class of recruits. All volunteers.”
Jean rolled her eyes, “I’m not becoming a teacher.”
“You wouldn’t be. You’d be joining them as a senior student.” Varka simply shot back.
“What?” Jean asked.
“It was proved a while ago, by Al-Haitham himself, that even pilots who have drifted alone, and…” His voice softened, “Lost a co-pilot – they can still drift without any interference or increased risk of brain trauma.”
“That’s…” Jean’s thoughts trailed off.
“You can pilot again, Jean.” Varka said, that same spark of hope in his voice that felt nostalgic, soulful. Varka’s hopeful tone still sounded like that of a child’s.

Or, Jean becomes a Jaeger pilot, experiences loss, and has to grow again.
