“Ah, Mr. Gaunt, welcome. You can come in.”
Ominis swallowed thickly, stepping into the Minister’s office. Minister Spavin had wanted to interview him himself.
He hadn’t stated why, but Ominis knew. It would be a political movement to hire him as an Auror. The Gaunts had always been at odds with Aurors, for obvious reasons, so promoting Ominis to be one would be strange.
Besides, he had connections to a murderer in Azkaban. He didn’t look very good on paper.
“Sit, Sit.” The Minister commanded, before taking a seat himself. Ominis’ wand informed him that the man in front of him was quite old. Ancient, really.
“So, Mr. Gaunt,” He spat out the name with distaste.
“You’ve put in a request to be promoted to ‘Auror’?”
Ominis nodded hesitantly. “Yes, Sir. I’ve been an apprentice here for an almost a year, under Landon Gore. H-Hephaestus’ grandson, Sir. He’s given me very high praise, and I believe he put in a good word for me.”
Spavin nodded. “Yes, of course I know that. And why do you believe that you would make a good Auror?”
Ominis knew this question had been coming.
“Well, Sir, frankly, I have a true hatred for the dark arts. I grew up surrounded by them, and it has caused me to see how truly devastating and-“
“Yes, but Ominis, level with me here.” The Minister stated, sounding quite disinterested.
“You have history with the dark arts, do you not?”
Ominis was taken aback.
“Well, y-yes, but-“
“And have you or have you not cast an unforgivable curse?”
Ominis froze. He rubbed at the scars under his sleeves, reminding himself of his mistakes.
“Well, I, uh, it really isn’t that simple, I-“
“Have you?” The Minister spat.
“…Yes.”
Spavin sat back in his chair. “I see. That is all, Gaunt. You are dismissed.”
Ominis sat in the chair, open-mouthed. “But, Sir, I-“
“Dismissed.”
Ominis felt tears spring to his eyes. “Er, yes, sir. Sorry, Sir.”
And with that, he left.

Within a week, he had the job.
He didn’t know how, or why, but he did. He could start his new life, leave that old, fucked-up one behind.
Ominis was beyond thrilled. He wished he had someone to celebrate with.
