More Than A Soldier

Summary:

Link brings Oliff lunch...

Work Text:

Link carried the sandwiches across the emptiness of Central Square where the town used to be.

There was a crisp wind, and he was sure he still smelled embers from the burning wood. The clouds above drifted by as he meandered over to the soldier standing by the gate.

"Oliff," Link said, passing the soldier the sandwich, "they don't have enough supplies to go around, so I couldn't get much."

Oliff, a man a bit older than Link with a goatee, graciously took the sandwich. "It'll do, thank you, Link. I'm not sure what the Captain would think if he saw me slacking."

They sat down on a few wooden chairs that Link crafted awhile ago. He knew Oliff and the other guards needed a reprieve sometimes, and sitting down for a bit never hurt anyone.

"He'd reprimand you," said Link. He recalled growing up that he had to be trained and reprimanded by the royal guard a hundred years ago. The captain back then was his own father, which made things a little worse.

"Good thing you're around, Captain Hoz has a lot of trust in you," said Oliff, biting into his sandwich.

Link looked down at his own. "There's many reasons for why he treats me differently. Most times, I'd rather he didn't…"

"Well, I treat you as a friend…maybe to commemorate our friendship, we'd eat some cooked fish."

Link rolled his eyes and smiled at Oliff's obvious hint. "Alright, I'll see what I can do."

"Thanks, Link, you're a hero."

Link bit into his sandwich. It came easy to be a little different when he knew who he is and what he's meant to do.

Once they finished their lunch, Link wandered off to fish for Oliff, and maybe find food for Raseno and Sharce. The soldiers guarding the gate usually didn't get breaks, so he'd like to share as much as he can.

He was the hero.

He was always meant to save the day, one way or another.
