“You can put her down, you know.”
The amused whisper was the only thing that could possibly make Gordon look up from the sleeping face of his newborn daughter. He smiled at Noelani, standing carefully so as not to jostle the baby, and moved to sit on the edge of her bed. “I’m good,” he said. Then, because she sounded very alert for someone who had just woken up, “How long have you been awake?”
Noelani chuckled. “Long enough to admire the view,” she replied and he grinned at that before leaning over, brushing his lips across hers.
“How are you feeling?” It was a ridiculous question, he realised straight away, but Noelani took it in her stride.
“Sore… tired…” He felt instantly guilty, until she added on, “So happy.” That was said with a smile that could have lit up ten city blocks, a look of wonder on her face that Gordon knew he’d remember for the rest of his life. Wordlessly, he handed the still sleeping baby across to her, delighting in how her smile, against all odds, grew even bigger. “She’s perfect,” Noelani whispered and Gordon couldn’t help himself, he had to reach out, one finger touching the baby’s cheek, tracing a trail down her soft skin.
“Just like her mom,” he said and even though he knew it sounded cheesy, he meant every word.
