Just the Boy

Summary:

“Whipped.” Fareeha even went as far as to make a snapping whip sound. “Now that we’ve established that, what are you going to do about it?”

“Probably nothing.” Hana replied easily.

“Admire him from afar.” Lucio added.

“Stare at his number in my phone but never do anything about it.” Lena chimed in.

“Think of Genji while I fuck Jack.” Gabriel admitted shamelessly.

“Think about fucking Genji while Gabe fucks me.” Jack confessed without hesitation.

OR
Under Fareeha's bad influence, five friends shoot their shot for the chance to be with the most sought after student of their university, Genji Shimada.

But who's gonna tell them Genji's taken?

Notes:

Hi everyone! :) I'm back much sooner than expected with this short story! I heard a throwback song recently and was overcome with the need to write this story inspired by the song (it'll be linked down below!) <3 This is literally just everyone obsessing over Genji and trying to shoot their shot with him so I hope you enjoy the chaos! :)

Thank you for tuning in for another story! <3 I hope you enjoy! :)

Work Text:

“I’m surprised Emily let you throw a party.”

Lucio took a sip from his red solo cup as he watched the chaos unfold, feeling thankful that he wasn’t going to have to clean up after this mess. He could see people in their bathing suits swimming around in the in ground pool, as well as drunken people dancing on the patio as music boomed through the speakers.

“She’s out of town this weekend visiting her parents.” Lena replied with a smile. “What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.”

“There’s no way she won’t hear about you throwing the biggest party of the year!” Lucio shook his head, laughing.

“It’ll all be worth it if I can tell her I got Genji in bed with me.” Lena returned, smirking.

Lucio shot her a skeptical look, “Aren’t you into girls? And aren’t you dating Emily?”

Lena released a love filled sigh, “Genji’s the only man I’d sleep with and Emily said she’d give me a pass if I got with him.”

“Don’t tell me Emily’s got a thing for Genji, too.” Lucio groaned.

“She does, but I told her to get in line.” Lena was speaking to Lucio but her eyes were locked onto her target. “Genji’s got loads of admirers but this party is my chance to get with him.”

“I doubt he even knows who you are.”

Lena playfully nudged Lucio, “Maybe not now, but after tonight I’m going to be in a poly relationship with him and Emily!”

“I can appreciate your optimism, I really can.” Lucio elbowed her back with a grin, “But if Genji’s going to occupy anyone’s bed tonight it’s gonna be mine!”

“Are you guys talking about Genji?”

Lena and Lucio turned around to see their friend Hana walking towards them with a drink in hand. She chucked the drink back and made sure she finished it off before tossing the drink to the side, earning a whine from Lena, who would have to clean that up later.

“Did Genji see me do that?” Hana asked, her eyes trained on the boy of her dreams. “Did he look like he thought what I did was cool?”

“Littering isn’t cool, love.” Lena chided with a wag of her finger.

“But was he looking at me?” Hana pouted. “I’ve been doing cool shit all night and he hasn’t seen any of it!”

Lucio rolled his eyes, “Genji could outdrink any of us. Of course you chucking back a drink isn’t going to impress him.”

“You think I should challenge him to a game of Mario Kart?” Hana questioned.

“You think that’s going to pull him off the dance floor?” Lucio asked, utterly unamused. “You should give up now if that’s the only game you got.”

“Oh yeah?” Hana weakly glared at Lucio. “What would you do to get with Genji?”

“This, uh, this isn’t about me.” Lucio stammered, a blush creeping onto his face at the thought of even talking to Genji.

“Please, tell me you three aren’t talking about Genji.”

Their heads whipped around to see the sophomore couple, Gabriel and Jack. Gabriel had a hand on his drink while the other was firmly grasping Jack’s waist. Despite his hands occupied by two of his favorite things, his eyes were focused on the only one who could command a dance floor.

“If anyone’s going to get with him it’s us.” Gabriel stated proudly, even going as far as to pull Jack closer to him.

Jack smiled smugly, “He’s got a point. He’s a junior so there’s no way he’d even look at three freshmen.”

“There’s nothing wrong with going after freshmen!” Lucio argued.

“Yeah, and I’m pretty sure Genji ran through the football team when he was a freshman!” Hana added with a cross of her arms.

“Which is all the more reason why he should be with us.” Jack retorted. “We’re the only ones who could handle him.”

“Please, you two can hardly handle each other.” Lena scoffed. “You’d drop the ball with him in a second.”

“That sounds like a challenge, Oxton.” Gabriel smirked. “Care to put your money where your mouth is?”

“What are you going on about, Reyes?” Lena’s eyes narrowed.

Gabriel puffed out his chest, “If you’re so sure Genji’d want a freshman like you then go get him. Show me who’s boss.”

Lena gulped.

“What? Don’t tell me you’re scared!” Gabriel threw his head back and laughed.

“Don’t act like you’re not scared, too!” Lena placed a hand on her hip, an eyebrow cocked. “If you’re so sure that Genji’d want to be with you two then go show me who he belongs to.”

Gabriel’s confidence faltered, “I don’t have to prove anything to you. Genji already knows he belongs to us.”

“Is that so?” Lena smirked.

“Then you won’t mind if I walk up to him asking about his relationship with the two of you?” Hana added, supporting her friend.

“That, uh, that won’t be necessary.” Jack cleared his throat nervously. “He clearly seems to be enjoying his night.”

Gabriel nodded in agreement, “Yeah, there’s no reason to pull him off the dance floor when he’s having a good time.”

“Pussies.”

Everyone turned around to see the junior captain of the basketball team, Fareeha. She stabbed a hole in a beer can and threw her head back, shotgunning it like the boss bitch she knew she was.

“Yeah, chug that shit, Pharah!” Genji cheered from the dance floor, even going as far as to whistle at her before he returned to the music.

That’s how you get his attention.” Lucio looked to Hana, who merely rolled her eyes in return.

“The five of you have no chance with Genji.” Fareeha chucked the empty beer can to the side, ignoring Lena’s whines. “He’s out of your league. I mean, look at him.”

Fareeha didn’t need to twist their arms for them to have them ogling Genji. All of them knew they were going to one of the most sought after schools in the country but it wasn’t the academic programs or the sports teams that made it the best.

It was Genji Shimada.

Genji was an international student from Japan who took the university by storm. Genji strutted onto campus in black leather pants, a skin tight crop top, and his green hair flowing in the gentle breeze and no one attending that school was the same anymore.

Suddenly, academics and sports weren’t important, because the only thing students wanted to do was prove they were worthy of occupying Genji’s bed, mind, or his heart. At this point, the students would take whatever Genji was willing to give, and he was stingy with what he gave.

Genji knew he had a beautiful face and an hourglass figure everyone wanted to get their hands on, so he made them work for him. If they could survive his attitude and if they could pass all the tests then maybe they would be deemed worthy of sleeping with him, but his heart always seemed untouchable.

Even now, Genji was dancing around with people at the party but he was out of everyone’s reach. People might be grinding their sweaty bodies on Genji but that was the most they would get with him, and they couldn’t help but think that’s how he liked it.

“I bet you’re all just looking for a quick fuck.” Fareeha folded her arms, looking unamused.

“I mean, I'd be fine just scoring a date with him.” Lucio stated sheepishly. “But if all he’s looking for is a quick fuck then I’ll take it. I’ll take whatever he’ll give me.”

“What if he gives you a broken heart?”

“It’d be an honor to have my heart broken by him.” Lucio blushed, shuffling his feet nervously.

“What exactly is it about Genji that all of you like so much? He can’t be that special.” Fareeha asked, seeking entertainment in these five hopeless romantics.

“But he is!” Lena quickly argued, unable to stand for someone daring to say that Genji wasn’t something special. “He’s got to be special if even I’m interested in him.”

“What do you like about him?” Fareeha’s eyes flickered to each of the friends. “And the rest of you, why do you like Genji? Don’t you know you’re playing with fire when it comes to him?”

“Yeah, maybe he laughed at my dream of being a DJ but, man, I dream about his laughter.” Lucio gushed, hearts in his eyes as he gazed upon Genji.

“He laughed at your dream?”

Lucio nodded, “Yeah, but I bet he was just doing that to make me want to prove him and all my haters wrong.”

“Yeah, because that’s why he laughed at you.” Fareeha retorted, sarcasm dripping with every word.

“Jack might call the shots but Genji just commands my attention.” Gabriel sighed, staring lovingly at Genji.

Jack bit his lip as he eyed Genji up and down, “Genji might be high maintenance but, damn, do I want to take care of him.”

“So, you’re both whipped?” Fareeha paraphrased, smirking.

“I’m not.” Hana declared with a smug smile.

“Oh, please!” Lena scoffed, “Just the other day you were saying you’ve never found anyone worthy of being your player two until Genji!”

“I-“ Hana cut herself off, blushing madly.

“Like I said, whipped.” Fareeha laughed.

Lena shrugged, “Well, I won’t try to deny it. Genji knows exactly what he’s doing to make even me and Emily fall for him!”

Fareeha facepalmed, sighing, “Every single one of you are the worst.”

“Well, what do you expect us to do? You even said he’s out of our league!” Hana huffed, rolling her eyes for added dramatic effect.

“Yeah, why bother chasing someone we’ll never catch?” Lucio supported.

“So, you’d rather pine from afar than ever entertain the idea of him liking one of you?” Fareeha cocked an eyebrow. “I was right to call you pussies. You’re all spineless.”

“Who are you calling spineless?” Gabriel’s eyes narrowed at Fareeha, and that’s when she realized she struck a nerve.

“You, bitch.”

“Gabe, don’t-“

“We’ll show you who’s spineless!” Gabriel growled and began trudging his way towards Genji with Jack.

“We? Gabe, where are you-“ Jack cut himself off when he realized what Gabriel was doing. “Oh shit.”

Fareeha smirked as she and the others watched as Gabriel and an unwilling Jack approached Genji on the dancefloor. Fareeha wished she had another drink so she could take a shot every time one of them made a fool of themselves in front of Genji.

Together, they watched from afar as Gabriel and Jack managed to engage Genji in a conversation. Gabriel seemed to be leading the conversation but what was surprising was that Genji seemed genuinely interested in whatever they were talking about.

Everything seemed to be working out up until they saw Genji throw his head back and laugh. This wasn’t the type of laughter someone does when they’re laughing at something funny, this was the kind of laughter someone does when a person is the joke.

Jack was shaking his head while Gabriel seemed confused by Genji’s reaction. Ultimately, it was Jack who waved at Genji and began dragging his boyfriend away from the man they were trying to date.

“So, that looked like it went well.” Fareeha barely managed to speak through her fit of giggles.

“That was painful to watch.” Hana snickered.

“Yeah, I thought you of all people would have game considering you’ve got Jack!” Lucio laughed.

“What makes you think he has game?” Jack gawked. “Gabe asked me out in a McDonald’s bathroom!”

“And you said yes?” Lena shot him a quizzical look, one where she was questioning his intelligence.

“We all make mistakes.”

“Oh shut up!” Gabriel swatted Jack, glaring. “You could’ve at least had my back when I was talking to Genji!”

Jack shoved him back, returning, “You were the one who wanted to talk to him, not me! And who was the one who fucked it up?”

Gabriel remained silent.

“You!” Jack rolled his eyes. “Tell them what you said.”

“I don’t want to.” Gabriel grumbled, crossing his arms like a pouting child.

“Fine, I will.”

“You wouldn’t.” Gabriel narrowed his eyes at his lover. “Don’t you dare do it, Jack.”

Jack ignored Gabriel, smirking, “So, Gabe starts talking to Genji and it genuinely was going well for a little bit.”

“But?” Hana grinned.

“But then Genji looks at us and asked if we’d like to Eiffel Tower with him. And this idiot…” Jack nudged Gabriel, “You want to tell them what you said?”

“…I said, I don’t have enough money to go to Paris.” Gabriel admitted, feeling like his pride took a hit when everyone laughed.

“He literally wanted both of you to fuck him and you blew it!” Hana pointed and laughed at Gabriel.

“I can’t believe you said that, Reyes!” Lena giggled. “You had him in the bag!”

Jack was glaring daggers at Gabriel, “We literally could’ve had him in our bed tonight but you ruined it. Nice going, Gabe!”

“Oh, fuck off, Jack!”

“Well, now that you’ve warmed him up I’m going to shoot my shot.” Hana pointed finger guns at her friends before she began making her way towards Genji.

“This’ll be good.” Fareeha grinned.

Everyone watched as Hana strolled up to Genji and began dancing with him. Hana wasn’t a bad dancer but compared to Genji she looked like an amateur. Yet, what was surprising was the fact that Genji smiled and began dancing with her.

The two of them seemed to be hitting it off well up until Hana said something that made him laugh at her. Hana seemed to try to recover from her fumble but Genji had turned around and began dancing with someone else.

Hana hung her head as she moped back to her friends. She grabbed a drink out of a stranger’s hand and chucked it back, hoping to drown her sorrows in alcohol.

“So, you get your player two?” Fareeha snickered.

“Nope. I told him we should play Overwatch and make a Twitch video for my channel sometime.” Hana groaned, slumping against Fareeha. “But he told me to talk to him when I have more viewers.”

“Harsh.” Lucio hissed like he had been burned.

“At least you know he’s seen your channel!” Lena supplied, trying to find a positive in her friend’s rejection.

Hana looked to Lena, smiling softly, “I guess that’s true. Maybe there’s still hope for me one day.”

“Yeah! Just up your followers and he’ll be begging to play with you one day!” Lucio smiled, assisting Lena in lifting Hana’s spirits.

“Where was this support for me and Jack?” Gabriel asked, feigning like he was hurt.

“Our care cups are empty for you.” Lena retorted, even going as far as to pretend she had a cup that she was emptying.

“That’s cold, Oxton.”

Lucio gulped, looking to his friends, “You guys think I should give it a try? Third time’s the charm, right?”

Hana sent him a bright smile, “Yeah, go for it! We got him all warmed up for you so get out there!”

“Alright, I can do this.” Lucio nodded to himself and began moving his body like he was trying to shake off his nerves. “Just walk up to him and ask if he’d like to be your boyfriend. You can do it.”

“You can do it, love! Get out there!” Lena cheered.

Lena giggled as she moved behind Lucio and shoved him towards the dancefloor, giving him the push he desperately needed. Lucio looked back at his friends, earning thumbs up from Lena and Hana while Gabriel sent him a middle finger and Jack nodded in approval.

Despite the mixed responses from his friends, Lucio marched on. Everyone was pleasantly surprised when Genji seemed happy to see Lucio. Genji seemed to be leading the conversation while Lucio appeared too starstruck to say anything more than a couple words.

Everyone was shocked when Genji grinned at Lucio and playfully punched his arm. Lucio slowly began making his way back to his friends but the look in his eyes and the lovesick smile on his face told them that he might have actually scored a date.

“So?” Fareeha quirked an eyebrow, curious. “How’d it go? It looks like you had more luck than the others.”

“He told me he listens to my music even if my dream to be a DJ is stupid.” Lucio swooned, falling against Hana.

“So, does that mean you got a date with him?” Hana asked, torn between feeling jealous and happy for her friend.

Lucio shook his head, sighing, “He told me to come back when I write a song about him.”

“You don’t write lyrics for your songs. It’s only beats.” Jack placed a hand on Lucio’s shoulder. “I think he tried to tell you nicely that you have no chance.”

“I can try to write lyrics!” Lucio argued desperately.

Gabriel rolled his eyes, “I heard you couldn’t even write a poem for your English Writing class.”

“Words are hard sometimes!” Lucio pouted.

“If you can’t even write a poem then you can’t write lyrics.” Gabriel smirked, earning another smack from Jack.

“You’re mean.”

Gabriel shrugged, completely unfazed. In all honesty, Gabriel was pleased to find that none of his friends were making progress with Genji. All that was left was-

“I guess it’s my turn!” Lena chirped.

Lena seemed to radiate with both happiness and confidence, which was something everyone else lacked. Lena hoped that her boundless energy worked in her favor when it came to winning Genji over.

She zoomed over to Genji with a dazzling smile plastered on her face. From the look of it, Genji seemed to know who Lena was. He even went as far as to shoot her a mischievous smile and tossed a pair of car keys her way.

It wasn’t until Lena turned away from Genji that they could see how red her face was. That could only mean things went either really good or she had found a way to embarrass herself in front of the only boy she ever dreamed about.

“Did he…” Fareeha was torn between feeling flabbergasted and impressed. “Did he give you his car keys?”

Lena shook her head, blushing profusely, “He thought I was the one who owned the Ferrari parked out front.”

“You don’t own a Ferrari.” Lucio furrowed his brow.

“I don’t but he thought since I hosted this party that I did.” Lena sighed, clutching the keys close to her chest.

“What happened after he threw you the keys?” Hana inquired.

“Yeah, you’re looking flushed, Oxton.” Gabriel sneered.

Lena’s blush seemed to deepen, “He said, I crashed your new Ferrari. Baby, fix the dents.”

“And you said..?” Jack motioned with his hand for Lena to continue.

“I didn’t say anything!” Lena cried. “I couldn’t get past the fact that he called me baby!”

Whipped.” Fareeha made the snapping sound once more, earning glares from the five friends.

“Oh yeah? Isn’t it your turn to make a move on Genji?” Hana sent a sly smile to Fareeha, feeling like the cat that caught the canary.

“Oh, I know better than to try to get with him.” Fareeha responded easily. “He’s a taken man, after all.”

“What?!”

Everyone knows that he’s dating Cole Cassidy.” Fareeha's shoulders shook as she laughed, "Well, everyone but the five of you apparently."

“Cole Cassidy?” Lucio echoed. “You mean, the guy that dresses like a cowboy?”

“That’s the one.”

Hana squinted at Fareeha suspiciously, “What kind of game are you trying to play with us? You can’t expect us to believe that the Genji Shimada is dating-“

“Cole, come here!” Hana was cut off and all eyes shifted to Genji, who was beaming as he waved at someone behind them. “Don’t make me have to lasso you in, cowboy!”

Everyone turned around to see none other than Cole Cassidy leaning against the back of the house with a beer in one hand and a cigarillo burning in his mouth. The five friends felt their stomach’s drop through the ground when they realized Cole was in perfect ear shot to hear their entire conversation.

Cole had a shit eating grin on his face as he tipped his cowboy hat to them, almost as if he was saying good game to the people who thought they were his competition. Cole took out his cigarillo and blew smoke towards them before making his move.

He threw his cigarillo on the ground and squished it beneath his spurs. He slugged the rest of his beer before throwing it in the recycling bin, and suddenly Lena wasn’t feeling so shocked because finally someone cared about the environment.

“Took me a year to wrangle that prized stallion there.” Cole addressed the group as he walked by, nodding at Genji. “I like your confidence but ain’t none of you had a chance with my honey bee.”

“Why’d you let us shoot our shots with him?” Hana asked quietly.

“I like it when he makes me jealous.” Cole replied as if the answer was so simple. He tipped his hat to the group, “I’ll be sure to think of all of you while he’s suckin’ my dick tonight.”

And just like that, all of their faces were flushed red and Cole was laughing as he walked by them. They could do nothing more than watch as Cole sauntered over to Genji, who seemed to light up and put the stars in the sky to shame.

The five friends winced as Genji shoved Cole into the pool with a devious little laugh. Despite the scene looking otherwise, they saw love in the way Genji and Cole interacted with each other.

There was love in the way Genji made sure he snatched Cole’s cowboy hat from the air so it wouldn’t be soaked. There was love in the way Cole breached the water and barked a laugh, instead of glaring daggers or yelling at Genji.

There was love in the way that Cole swam over to the edge of the pool and sweetly asked for a kiss. There was love in the way that Genji humored him, getting on the ground and leaning in to plant a soft kiss to his lips.

The five friends still thought that they had a chance even when Cole talked to them, but after seeing the couple together they knew they had to raise their white flags and surrender. It was clear as day that the couple only cared about each other, as well as it was obvious there was no room for the rest of them in Genji’s heart.

Gabriel’s eyes locked onto the keys still in Lena’s hand, “Hey, I’m pretty sure those are Moira’s keys.”

“Oh, right! She has a Ferrari, doesn’t she?” Lena replied.

“Yeah, that’s hers.” Gabriel hummed. “Pretty impressive that Genji stole her keys.”

“That’s hot.”

The five friends were silently admiring Cole and Genji’s relationship, chuckling at the way Cole grabbed Genji and hoisted him onto his shoulders with ease. Genji placed the cowboy hat atop green locks as Cole paraded him around the pool like the royalty he was.

Everyone was in silent agreement that while they knew they would never have Genji, that didn’t mean they had to stop ogling him. While the five friends kept their eyes trained on Cole and Genji, Fareeha was plotting and was surely up to no good.

“Anyone want to sit on the roof and watch Moira freak out when she sees her car?” Fareeha asked with a grin.

“We’re in.”
