Summary
Six years after the end of the war, Zuko joins Katara, Sokka, and Aang in the Southern Water Tribe for a voyage around the southern continent to repair piles of stones along the coast which serve as location markers for sailors. Chief Hakoda is not pleased with the rate of Fire Nation decolonization. On the journey, Zuko and the others stumble upon a raiding ship, even though Zuko insists he ended all Fire Nation raids years ago. Aang gives good advice.
A glimpse into the post-series world of AtLA, darker and more complicated than when they were children; a meditation on people versus country; and a critique of the poison of political compromise, except not in the shitty way the comics did it. Incidentally featuring the legacy of Fire Lord Zoryu's purge of Fire Nation clans (from the the Kyoshi novels).

Politically focused fic bc Zuko is trying to reverse the effects of a hundred year old war and that boy is struggling.

"'He wasn’t evil,' sighed Katara. 'Just sixteen.'"
oh, what a line. there's a tendency for people to believe in moral absolutism but a lot of a time a person isn't an inherently terrible person, their material conditions have resulted in their circumstances and their beliefs. this has to be one of my favorite atla fics ever with how tenderly it deals with topics like culture, colonization, and politics. amazing world building. it's so easy to forget how terribly young the gaang is but this points that fact out without being too on the nose about it.
