Chapter Text
Lucy stared at the stick in front of her, the pregnancy test. She closed her eyes and opened them back up. Two lines. She was pregnant, oh my god. She shook her head and turned away from the test. It wasn’t like they were preventing pregnancy, they were married and they both wanted kids. But they hadn’t talked fully about it like when they would start trying. They only had been married 4 months. She didn’t even think she could be pregnant, until this morning when she realized she was late. Like two weeks late. And it made sense, even four months into being married Lucy still felt like they were on their honeymoon. And now that she thinks about it they may have been a little more relaxed with the protection in the last few months.
She knew she wanted kids and Tim did too. This was a good thing.
She grinned as she reached to grab the test from the counter. She was thinking of ways she could surprise Tim. He didn’t even know she was taking a test. She went into their bedroom and into the closet. She reached up for a box, she grabbed it and opened it up finding two little boots in there.
Perfect.
It was probably cheesy and cliché but she didn’t care it was them.
She slipped the pregnancy test in one of the boots and put them on Tim’s side of the bed. She left the bedroom and went to the kitchen so when Tim got home he wouldn’t be suspicious.
Tim walked through the door 15 minutes later, with grocery bags. She ran to help him, just eager to see him and be in his presence.
“Hi.” He said once he put the bags down. She set the ones she grabbed next to his on the counter. He pulled her into his arms. “How was your day?”
“Boring.” She said trying not to smile. “I don’t like when you work and I have the day off.”
“Mmm me neither.” He said and he ran his hand down her back and then he kissed her on the top of the head.
“I’m going to go change and then we can cook dinner okay?”
She nodded trying not to bounce on her feet. She knew her husband’s routine by heart. He would get home, change, and then help her make dinner. She watched him walk away, and then turned and started to put the groceries away.
It was only a few minutes before Tim came walking back in the room. Holding the boots and the pregnancy test.
“Lucy?” And he already sounded choked up. “What is this?”
Lucy turned to look at him no longer able to contain the grin on her face. “I think you know what it is Tim.” She said. He looked at her in wonder, the realization that what he was holding was exactly what he thought it was.
“Are you- are we- having a baby?” He asked quietly his voice shaky and full of emotion.
She nodded and went over to him. “Yes. Yes we are. I took the test today. I realize I was late and—”
Tim cut her off by kissing her on the lips and lifting her up. She squealed when her feet left the ground.
“Oh my god Lucy. We are having a baby? I’m going to be a dad?” She nodded and cupped his face with her hands.
“You’re going to be the best dad Tim Bradford.”
“Oh my god.” He said again. “I can’t—” He kissed her again. “I love you so much.” He bent down so he was level with her stomach. “I love you baby. So much. Your mom and I can’t wait to meet you.” He looked up at her briefly his smile wide and bright and then he put his nose to her stomach kissing it gently.
Lucy tangled her fingers in his short hair. She would do anything to keep that smile on his face forever.
He stood back up and twirled her around. “A baby Lucy. God I love you. Thank you.”
Lucy laughed in pure happiness. “Babe. You had a part in this too.”
Tim just shook his head, “No, thank you for choosing me. For being my wife. My partner in crime and life. For always being there.”
Tears started welling up in Lucy’s eyes and she blinked them back. “Well I did say forever in my vows. And I meant it. I will be yours forever.”
They tell all their friends and family a few weeks later. At 20 weeks, they find out they are having a girl.
Tim almost cries in the doctor’s office. He held Lucy’s hand staring at the screen of their daughter moving around. They set up the nursery, paint it a light pink. Tim builds the crib while Lucy folds their daughter’s clothes. Lucy is emotional and cranky and Tim just goes with it. He tends to her needs, backs away when he needs to. They fight over the name, both wanting it to be perfect. They cuddle and they plan for their baby girl’s future.
Angela throws them a baby shower two weeks before their daughter is born. It’s simple and elegant and Lucy cries at all the support she and Tim have. She blames it on the pregnancy hormones but she really is touched. They both had been through so much and to end up here together expecting their first baby is something she never thought would happen.
Two weeks later, as Tim is finishing up a shift he gets a call from Lucy that it’s time. He almost loses his mind, frantic he’s going to miss his baby’s birth. But Angela throws him into her car, turns on the sirens and they are headed to the hospital. He was so jittery in his seat that Angela had to tell him to calm down they were going to make it to the hospital. And him being nervous and jittery wasn’t going to help Lucy one bit.
Lucy was in labor for 12 hours and she blames him several times but then their daughter is born. And all the insults are gone as she’s placed on Lucy’s chest. She’s beautiful. Tim does cry which Lucy tucks away for later.
They name her Olivia Hope. Because even when it got hard they never really lost hope.
She looks like a mix of Tim and Lucy and she’s perfect.
Tim holds his daughter, smoothing back her dark wisps of hair. “Hi baby girl.” He mutters. “I’m your daddy. You will always be safe with me and your mama.”
Olivia coos and opens her eyes, so blue like his. “I love you Olivia Hope.”
Lucy who had been sleeping, looked over at her husband and daughter and smiled at the way Tim was looking at her. Like she was the most precious, perfect thing on earth. Lucy was very familiar with that look.
Her daughter. Their daughter was going to be safe and sound too.
Lucy knew Tim would protect both of them fiercely.
She looked outside the window, it was morning the sunrise peeking over the horizon.
Come morning light, you and I will be safe and sound.
