Chapter Text
Epilogue
Fidgeting with her jewelry, Elizabeth stared at the heavy doors and waited surrounded by a dozen men and women that she currently only barely knew. A hand slipped into hers and she sucked in a breath. “I can do this, right?”
At her side, Nadine chuckled. “It’s a little late for that, don’t you think?”
Blowing out all the air in her lungs, she heard the music inside end. “I suppose you’re right.”
A loud voice spoke from just inside the door and she cast one last glance toward Nadine before the doors began to swing open. “I love you.” She whispered under the announcement of their entrance.
“I love you too.” Plastering on a smile, Nadine kept ahold of her hand as they started walking forward to the sound of Hail to the Chief playing.
Side by side, hand in hand, they greeted person after person, following Blake and Daisy’s leads around the room.
“Congratulations, Madam President.” Someone shook her hand and Elizabeth accepted that she was beyond having any idea who was who tonight.
“Thank you.”
The next person was already on her. “Congratulations, President Tolliver.”
“Thank you.” She looked over, exchanging a look with Nadine.
Between well-wishers, Nadine leaned close. “I never get tired of hearing that.”
“I’m glad, First Lady Tolliver.” She whispered back before the next person claimed their attention.
One dance was all they had time for, but Elizabeth was thankful for the reprieve from strangers and to have Nadine in her arms. “Is it over yet?”
Nadine giggled. “Only… four more tonight.”
Elizabeth groaned.
“You’ll survive.” Nadine wore an amused smile. “You did it. You deserve this.”
“We.” She corrected.
“Right. We.”
Elizabeth kissed her, aware of their audience but not caring. “I love you.”
“I love you too… Madam President.”
