Work Text:
“What are you two doing?”
Alex looked up at their spouse. “Hi, Morgan. You weren’t supposed to be home for another two days.” Hawk chittered happily, got up to hug its parent, and was held back by Alex. “Clean hands first, remember?”
Morgan watched Hawk leave the dining room, heading for the kitchen, then turned back to Alex, who had already snapped away the mess that was on the table. “What were you two doing?”
“Uh…”
“Don’t you dare lie to me, you suck at it.”
“Impromptu dissection?” Morgan’s face was enough for Alex to backpedal. “It’s not as bad as it sounds! Hawk stepped on a spider and wanted to know what it’s insides looked like and I- well, I can actually help with biology homework, okay?”
Morgan took a breath, looking at the table. “You’re telling me you sized up a dead spider and decided to dissect it because Hawk was curious? How frequently does this happen while I’m away?”
“Not… super frequently?”
“Do you always use the table we have family dinner at?”
“It’s a good work surface.”
“Put it in Hawk’s room. Get me a new one. No more impromptu dissections on the table I eat at.” Morgan sat down in a chair, yawning. “I really hate flying coach.”
Alex snapped, then paused and snapped again. A ‘Blood of my Enemies’ was waiting hot for Morgan on the new table. “Why didn’t you call? I could have-”
“I love you,” Morgan sighed into the drink, and Alex went red immediately. They finished the drink then looked up at their spouse. “I got done early and just wanted to be home, it wasn’t an emergency.”
“But you flew coach .” Hawk had come back into the dining room and crawled into Morgan’s lap. Alex snapped a refill into their cup. “We should go to the couch, I’m sure you have at least three stories and it’s more comfortable than these. Hawk-”
“I’ve got it,” Morgan replied quickly, standing up and scooping their kid up in their arms. “Missed you, buddy. Wanna hear about how I stranded Ohio James in the jungle for three days?”
Hawk chittered happily and Alex smiled. “I love it when you strand Ohio. They deserve it."
“He was so mad, you would’ve been cackling,” Morgan replied, smiling.
“You better have been,” Alex replied, sitting down then putting a pillow on their lap. Morgan crashed onto the couch, head ending up on the pillow in Alex’s lap. Hawk chittered some more, getting comfortable, then watched Morgan waiting for more of the story.
“I never miss an opportunity to cackle, you both know that. Now, about the temple…”
