Chapter Text
They woke up in the early hours of the morning; Lucy to use the bathroom and Tim to grab a drink. They fell back into bed together and after more heated kisses, Tim slapped her ass and told her to get on her hands and knees. He took her that way, hard and fast, occasionally slapping her ass.
She came, hard, her face buried in the pillow to muffle her shouts. Tim followed soon after and after disposing of the condom, they both collapsed onto the bed, sweaty and panting. They curled up together and fell back to sleep.
The drive back to Mid-Wilsher was hardly quiet but neither Tim nor Lucy knew quite what to say to each other. As they neared the station Tim finally spoke up.
“I’d like to keep seeing you”
“Me too” Lucy replied and Tim gave a cautious smile.
“Yeah?” he asked and Lucy nodded.
“I need to talk to Mark though” she said hesitantly “not to sound conceited, but I have a feeling he’s gonna ask me out now the op is over”
Tim nodded “You’re gonna break his heart” he said, sounding both sincere and joking.
“I know” Lucy sighed “and I feel bad. He was there for me when everything with Andrew went down. But he’ll only ever be my friend” she paused “I hope he’ll still want to be when I turn him down”
Lucy turned into Mid-Wilsher, parked and both she and Tim exited the vehicle. They glanced at each other before making their way into the station.
They found Grey, Mark, Mike and Angela in the roll call room.
Mark briefed them both on what had happened between the drug hand-off and their return this morning.
“....so we finally have two major players off the street” Mark finished. He beamed at Lucy “You are gonna have departments begging you to join them when this gets out across the divisions”
Lucy gave him a shy smile before gesturing to Tim “It wasn’t all me. Tim’s C.I gave us the way in”
Mark cleared his throat “Uh, yeah, thanks to you too Officer Bradford”
Tim nodded his acknowledgement.
Mark turned to Grey “Well, thanks for your assistance on this Wade. Hope to work with you again sometime” he nodded and turned to Angela and Mike “Detective Lopez, Mike”
He turned back to Lucy “I’m gonna head out. Captain’s given us both the week. You need a ride home?”
Lucy nodded her acknowledgement of the leave “Uh no, I’m good thanks. I want to try and catch Nyla before I leave”
“She should be at her desk” Angela said, nodding towards the detectives desk on the far side of the bullpen.
“Thanks” Lucy replied.
She caught sight of Nyla as she made her way over and Nyla stood to greet her.
“Damn” Nyla chuckled quietly “Always knew you’d kill it”
“UC or being a detective?”
“Whatever you put your mind to” Nyla replied. Her expression turned serious “You doing ok?”
Lucy shrugged “I will be. I think I’m finally coming to terms with what happened”
Nyla raised her eyebrow before glancing back to Grey’s office. Mark had left but Grey, Angela, Tim and Mike were still talking.
“Something happen in Frontera?” Nyla asked.
“Maybe” Lucy replied “advice someone gave me turned out to be what I needed”
Nyla looked at her for a moment before her gaze shifted and she said quietly “He’s a good guy”
Lucy frowned at her, resisting the urge to turn and follow Nyla’s subtle gaze.
“I think you could be good for each other”
Lucy gave a shy smile; she’d never been able to get anything past Nyla.
Nyla surprised her by pulling Lucy into a hug “Don’t be a stranger” she said “Lila would be stoked to see Aunt Lucy occasionally”
Lucy returned the hug before pulling back “Promise” she said. And she meant it.
She turned to leave, noting that whatever conversation Grey was having with Tim, Angela and Mike seemed to be wrapping up. She made her way towards the entrance to the station.
“Lucy”
She turned and watched as Mike caught up with her. He jerked his head to a quiet corner and she followed him.
“I was hoping to catch you before you left” he began “Look I know things between us haven’t been......I mean, my timing never seemed....”
“Mike-” Lucy began, guessing where he was heading and desperately wanting to stop him before he could say it.
“Lucy, I never stopped caring about you. Can I take you to dinner?” he asked, in a rush.
Lucy swallowed.
“I think we could be really good together” he said, sincerely.
And he was right.
In a different life, in different circumstances, they probably could be.
But not in this life and not in this circumstance.
Lucy shook her head sadly “I’m sorry Mike. I really am. But no”
Mike nodded, almost as if he had expected that answer.
“I’d ask if there’s someone else, but I don’t think I want to know” he said sadly.
“I never meant to hurt you” Lucy relied, sincerely.
“Did I ever stand a chance?” he asked.
Lucy shrugged “Maybe? If things had worked out differently. But they didn’t”
Mike gave a slow nod “If things don’t work out, give me a call?”
Lucy chuckled “You’re incorrigible”
She gave him a hug and kiss on the cheek and walked out of Mid-Wilsher.
She’d almost made it to her car before she was stopped again. This time by Mark.
“Hotshot strikes again” he greeted her.
“Team effort” Lucy corrected.
“Now the op’s over” Mark began and Lucy internally groaned.
Fuck her actual life.
“I’m officially not your supervisor anymore so I have no guilt in asking you to dinner?”
Lucy closed her eyes briefly, hating herself for what she was about to do.
“Mark, I like you, and I am so grateful for everything you’ve done for me, both personally and professionally-“
“But, you’re saying no” Mark finished for her.
Lucy nodded “I’m really sorry. If I ever gave you the wrong impression or led you on. It wasn’t my intention”
“I uh, I saw you talking to Mike” Mark said, shrugging “I’m not trying to be a jerk” he added quickly.
“I turned him down” Lucy said quietly “he and I were never going to work out”
Mark nodded slowly “Oh” he said
Lucy silently begged him not to ask and thankfully he didn’t.
“Well enjoy your week off, you certainly earned it. I’ll see you soon”
He gave her a hug, kissed her cheek and left.
Lucy blew out a breath and sagged against her car. She startled when her phone beeped
Tim: I have the week too. Got any plans?
Lucy: You, hopefully. My place?
Tim: Be there in 20
Lucy smiled, climbed in the car and drove home.
