its the mundane things

Summary:

Giggling at her girlfriend's regular cute antics, Jamil nodded her head, resulting in Karim giving her a dazzling grin as she held Jamil’s hand all the bit more tighter and ran towards the kitchen.

Seeing the large and beautiful smile her girlfriend gave her, Jamil couldn’t help but think that they should both do things like this a bit more often.

If seeing the smile of which she adored, it would all be worth it.

Work Text:

The weather could be described as perfect for a regular summer day: not a single cloud in sight, the sun was high in the sky shining brightly, and no breeze to mess up your hair – typical Scarabian weather.

Jamil could be seen sitting on the ledge of the fountain in front of the dorm. This wasn’t something she did often as she’s always busy taking care of Karim, focusing on school, or dealing with matters of the dorm.

Unsurprisingly, as she had nothing to do today, Jamil was quite at a loss for what she could possibly do today. With nothing better to do, she found herself sitting on the fountain ledge placidly staring out towards the vast desert.

“Mimi! Mimi!”

Turning around, Jamil was met with the sight of Karim skidding to a stop (and almost falling into the fountain) in front of her out of breath.

“Karim, be careful! What if you fell in the fountain again?!” Jamil yelled, quickly getting up and reaching towards her incase she had actually fallen in.

Steadying herself, Karim looked up at Jamil with a grin on her face, “Oops! Hehe.. But even if I fell into the fountain, you’d be right there to catch me, Mimi!”

Sighing, Jamil took Karim’s hands and walked with her from the fountain into the dorm lounge while Karim chattered away, seemingly forgetting what she was going to tell Jamil.

Realizing that they were in the Scarabia dorm lounge, Karim suddenly remembered the reason she had gone to go find Jamil in the first place.

“Oh right! Hey, Mimi? Can you do my hair please?” she asked as she looked up to Jamil with bright and hopeful eyes causing Jamil to huff and slightly turn away as a small blush crept up on her cheeks. Glancing back at her, she nodded her head and smiled as Karim let out an excited cheer and dragged them both off to her room.

Hey, it’s not like she had anything better to do today right? It’s totally not like she wanted to touch her hair or anything!

As she and Karim walked through the halls of Scarabia, Jamil naturally found her eyes wandering to the head of silvery white hair belonging to the slightly shorter girl in front of her. Even though she was Karim’s attendant, she’s never actually styled her hair before – only ever having her hands slightly brush it whenever she helps Karim put on her turban.

Now that she knows she’ll actually be touching and styling it, Jamil couldn’t help but gaze at Karim’s soft-looking hair. Although Karim’s hair just reached past her shoulders, Jamil had noted that it always has this sort of frizziness to it. Another thing that Jamil has noticed, is that Karim doesn’t like straightening her hair for whatever reason and although Jamil had never actually voiced it out loud, she much preferred Karim’s wavy hair thinking it suits her much better.

As they arrived at Karim's room, she was quick to bring Jamil to her vanity as she plopped herself down on the pillow in front of the mirror, and patted the floor pillow beside her. "Mimi, come sit! After you finish mine I'll do yours too, okay?"

Nodding her head, Jamil walked towards Karim and the floor pillow, noticing all the different coloured ribbons of various lengths lying across the top of the vanity.

"Kari, what's all this for? You want me to style your hair with…ribbons?" Getting an eager nod from her, Jamil raised her eyebrows in question, "Do you have a specific style in mind that you want me to do?"

"Mmm… nope! You can do anything you want, anything that you think will suit me, okay?"

Nodding again as she moved the floor pillow to be situated just behind Karim and sat down, right as Karim placed some ribbons, hair ties, and a brush beside her.

"Thank you, Kari," Jamil started off as she grabbed the brush and started gently brushing Karim’s hair, “By the way, I’ve been wondering… what prompted this idea?”

“Oh! Uh, nothing really hehe… I just thought that since your hair always looks really pretty, and I’ve always wanted to style it! So I thought, why not!”

As they slipped back into silence, Jamil had finally decided to just style Karim’s hair in something simple and not too elaborate. ‘I guess I’ll just braid it in two and put 2 bows at the end. Hopefully Kari’s hair isn’t too short for it… mmm, it should be fine, I think.’

Parting Karim’s hair in half and starting from the right side of Karim’s temple, she took three strands of hair about the size of an inch and started braiding. She took the right strand of hair and crossed it over the middle, took the left strand of hair and crossed it over the middle, and as she continued to braid, she would take parts from the side and incorporate it into the braid until she had reached just near the end of Karim’s neck and fastened the half-finished braid with an elastic. After Jamil did the same process with the left side of Karim’s hair, she took two thin dark red ribbons and tied them into a bow over the elastics.

“Kari, honey? I’m finished.” Jamil said as she patted Karim’s shoulder and moved to her right.

Gasping, Karim jumped at Jamil, eager to hug her, “Mimi, you did such a good job, as I thought!! It looks really really pretty, I love it! Come sit, go go, it’s my turn!” she said as she quickly got up off of Jamil and sat on the floor pillow in which she had previously sat on, patting the one in front of her.

Laughing at her girlfriends usual antics, Jamil was quick to sit on the floor pillow and began taking out her braids and hair tie with help of Karim.

Sitting again in a comfortable silence, Karim had been brushing out Jamil’s hair while humming a little tune. Taking a much longer white ribbon than the one Jamil used, Karim wrapped the ribbon over Jamil’s head and tied a knot at the bottom and just simply tied the rest of the ribbon into a side braid against Jamil’s right shoulder and tied it with an elastic.

Twiddling her fingers a bit, Karim hesitantly spoke, “Uh… I’m finished. It’s not that elaborate since I’m not really good at braiding but uh, I practiced a lot with my own hair! It doesn’t look too bad, if I do say so myself!!”

Looking in the mirror, Jamil smiled softly and gave Karim a small kiss on the cheek and gave her a small kiss on the lips, “Kari, it’s beautiful, you did a great job.” Getting up and grabbing Karim’s hand to also bring her up, Jamil directed them both to the direction of the kitchen.

“Hmm… Mimi? Why are we going to the kitchen?”

“To get some coconut juice, silly,” Jamil said as she turned around to face Karim.

Gasping, Karim all of a sudden became very giddy, “Oh! Oh! Can we go to the oasis after? Please, please?”
