Work Text:
Dark storm clouds churned overhead. Voices below sang a sad solemn song as a group marched slowly toward a wide open meadow. The meadow ended on a cliff looking over a vast ocean. The waves crashed violently against the side spewing water up over the side. A man dressed in black robes led the group. A top his head was a crown made of pure gold. The band of gold is inlaid with diamonds, and the central medallion is studded with rubies and emeralds only the best for a King.
The King himself had long jagged scars running down the left side of his face. The left eye was clouded, lost in a battle long forgotten by the man. He held up his hand stopping the crowd. The man pointed to an empty spot on the field and stated. “There.”
A group of men holding shovels shuffled to the front and ran to the spot pointed out by the king. The men started digging as everyone else watched in silence. Once a fair-sized hole had been dug the men sunk back into the crowd. The King sighed heavily as a group of 3 walked to the front carrying a body wrapped tightly in linen. Everyone but the man in front watched with rapid interest as the men carrying the body walked to the hole and carefully laid it down.
Another man wearing a long black robe that was draped neatly over his white alb and cincture. A stole of bright red cloth was draped around his neck to finish his funeral attire. The man walked proudly through the front of the crowd carrying what looked like an old bound book of religion. Before the priest began the last rites he stopped next to the king and asked. “My lord. Would you like to say anything before I begin?” The question made the King pause. He was worried if he began talking he would burst into laughter and then be deemed insane.
He shook his head. “No. Go on with the ceremony.”
The priest nodded curtly. “As you wish King Levi.” He walked forward and began calling to the gods to bless the queen in the afterlife and for the continued blessings of their great kingdom. The king now identified as Levi scoffed to himself as he listened to the cries and pleas of the crowd for taking their queen so soon.
Levi wasn’t sad. Not at all, in fact, he was glad. When the priest called for the crowd to bow their heads in prayer Levi bowed along with the crowd and smirked to himself- hoping that no one else could see him. He couldn’t believe he outlived his wife, she was younger than him by years, so the fact that he was still standing and she wasn’t? It was nothing less than a miracle.
After prayers were said, a few of the queen's chosen family threw flowers into her grave after that Levi lifted his head. Now what? Funerals were such annoying things.
He was raised as a soldier. Taught that you leave the dead where they dropped. Maybe if it was possible, pick up a piece of cloth for the family. Nothing like this.
His right-hand man and closest friend Erwin stepped up next to him and whispered. “Levi. I think the crowd might appreciate a few wise words from their king.”
Levi rolled his eyes. The King should have expected to say something at his wife’s funeral. Maybe he should have accepted his friend's speech earlier this morning instead of ripping it up like a petulant child. Levi dusted his robes and turned to the crowd holding his arms wide. “My people!” He bellowed. “You’re queen is dead. But I am not. So mourn her . Your king is strong. I will still lead us as I have sworn twenty years ago.” Then without further ado, he dropped his arms and walked through the crowd and to his horse.
Levi heard Erwin make a distressed noise like he was less than impressed with his speech. Whatever. The people needed proof that he wasn’t going to lose it just because his good-for-nothing wife was dead. He hopped on his midnight black steed and looked back at the freshly covered grave. Levi felt his lips pull themselves into a smirk. Finally. Freedom.
~Six months later~
Inside a quiet room, a man sat on a chair. The room was huge massive even, it was adorned with rich, golden accents and plush velvet furnishings in shades of royal blue. A massive four-poster bed, complete with silken curtains, stood in the center of the room. Along the perimeter of the room stood intricately carved wooden wardrobes and armoires, filled to the brim with the finest garments and accessories the kingdom had to offer. A fireplace crackled in one corner, casting warm, flickering light throughout the room. And near the fireplace, a table was set with a decanter of the finest wine and goblets of gold.
The king sat in his favorite plush armchair, his eyes closed as he savored the warmth of the fire. The crackling of the wood echoed softly through the room, casting dancing shadows on the walls. The man held a steaming cup of tea, the aroma of his favored blend wafting into his nostrils. The warmth of the tea seeped into his cold fingers, bringing comfort to his body. He took a sip, letting the tea's delicate flavors roll over his tongue. As he sat, lost in thought, the fire's warmth seemed to seep into his soul, and he let out a contented sigh. In this moment, he was at peace, surrounded by the quiet of the room, and the gentle glow of the fireplace. This is how it should be.
The silence was rudely interrupted by a pounding on his double doors. He set his tea down on the table next to him and shouted, “Enter!”
Hanji and Erwin walked in. Levi bit back a curse. The last thing he wanted to do tonight is play host. Erwin gave him an annoyed look. “Is this how the widowed king spends his evenings? Locked away in his chambers drinking tea?”
Levi scoffed. “I’m still grieving.”
Hanji rolled their eyes and sat down in the chair next to him. “Bull shite. You stopped grieving the second after the priest announced her last breath.”
He shrugged. “Don't tell me how to feel.”
Erwin sighed and stepped in front of him and Hanji. “Enough. Levi, we need to talk.”
Levi held up his hand. “Don’t say what I think you’re going to say.”
Hanji reached over and slapped him upside the head. “Yes. Levi, you need a wife.”
He clicked his tongue and was about to tell his friends to get the fuck out of his chambers but Erwin pointed at him. “Levi. The court is getting antsy. Your wife is dead and you don’t have an heir-.”
“And who’s fault is that?” He snapped.
Erwin sighed like he was tired of Levi’s complaining. “I know your wife wasn’t your favorite person. But she was the queen and you two never produced a child. Now you aren’t getting any younger, who’s going to take the crown when you pass?”
Levi crossed his arms. It wasn’t his fault his wife never gave him a son. Ok. So. It may have partly been his fault since he refused to sleep with her. In his defense, his father promised a virgin but on their wedding night he discovered his new bride had been spreading her legs for any man that smiled at her. He refused to stick his dick in anything that wasn’t clean. Levi knew firsthand how many diseases cunts and cocks could carry . He’d never risk his cleanliness for some whore.
Especially after what happened to his mother when she slept with one too many concubines. She caught the dreaded sickness and was dead within months. Nobody but Erwin and Hanji knew the truth about why he and his wife never officially ‘consummated’ the marriage.
He sighed in annoyance. “Listen to me. The next person I marry will probably be the one sitting next to me on my deathbed. I want someone I cly tolerate.” His first marriage was arranged. Levi’s father said that if he wanted the crown he would marry whoever would strengthen their kingdom. So Levi married the whore but that didn’t mean he liked her.
Erwin rubbed his temples. “I understand. Do you at least have anyone in mind?”
Levi opened his mouth but Hanji interrupted him. “And it cannot be one of your ‘ clean whores ’. They have to have some title or power.”
The king rolled his eyes. Did his friends think he was stupid? He knew he couldn’t marry a whore, plus he only saw them as cunts, not companions. “Please. Like they know what to do with a room full of men besides suck cock.”
Hanji barked out a laugh. “I bet the court would love that.”
Erwin shook his head. “This isn’t a time for jokes. Levi, you need to find a wife. Preferably one you can produce an heir with.”
He sighed. Erwin was stating the obvious. “You both don’t think it’s too soon? Not that I’m wasting tears on her but the people loved her. I can’t have them thinking I’m some heartless old bastard that doesn’t even wait a year to marry someone else.”
“You are a heartless old bastard.” Hanji pointed out.
Erwin groaned. “You both are hopeless. Levi, I promise the people will not care. They want an heir. They want assurance that the crown is strong and will carry out a peaceful time like you, your father, and the king before him.”
Levi hated when Erwin made good points. He wouldn’t risk everything he’d worked so hard for. He huffed. “Fine. Line up the virgins. Find me a wife.” If Erwin wanted to marry him off so bad then he could find him a wife.
Hanji giggled as Erwin shook his head in disbelief. “Unbelievable. I will start plannings for a party. I’ll make sure to invite all the lords and their families. One of them has to have someone to your liking.”
Hanji nodded. “If not, you can always ask the court to help you. I’m sure they’d love to pick out your next bride.”
Levi scoffed. His court was made up of 7 men. 5 of them had been selected by his father. Levi could only replace them with his own if one died. It basically meant that even though his father was not king anymore a lot of his court was loyal to his bastard father. “Like I’d ever let those bastards pick my wife.”
Erwin hummed. “They would appreciate it if you got their approval.”
Levi clicked his tongue. “I already let them pick my battles and the kingdom spendings, my army. Not to mention I let my father pick out my first wife. I’m choosing this one.”
Erwin sighed obviously tried of his complaining.“Fine. Fine. I’ll set the party date for a few months out.”
Hanji clapped their hands excitedly. “Wonderful. That gives you plenty of time to make yourself more presentable!”
“Presentable?” He scoffed in disbelief. “I’m the king. Everyone should be kissing my feet in thanks for me even thinking about marrying them.”
Hanji huffed and reached over to flick his forehead. “You’re such a dick. You need someone to actually take care of you. Erwin and I are sick of putting up with you.”
Levi stood up. “I’m 45 years old. I’ve been taking care of myself since I was 5.”
Hanji crossed their arms. “That’s not what I mean. I want you to be happy in this marriage. Have someone else you can confide in.”
Levi walked over to the table with the wine decanter and goblets and poured himself a glass. He’d never admit it outloud but that’s what he wants too. He spent the last 20 years in a loveless marriage, he didn’t even talk to or even see his old wife unless absolutely necessary. Levi hated that the only real companionship he had was with Erwin and Hanji. Not that he didn’t love and appreciate them but he was lonely. He wanted someone that actually gave a shit about him and didn’t just want him for his power or his dick.
Levi took a sip of his wine. “I’ll try my best to find someone that makes me happy.”
Hanji grinned and leaned back in their seat. “Great. I’ll even take some time and do some recon. You may not want the court's approval but whoever you marry needs to be approved by me.”
Levi raised his glass towards his friends who had made themselves comfortable in his chairs. “Gods help me.”
Erwin waved his hand like he was the king. “Don’t be a hoarder. I know you have out the good stuff.”
Levi rolled his eyes but poured his friends some drinks. Gods only know why he puts up with them.
The night of the party was finally upon them. Levi stood in his private chambers waiting for his servants to finish dressing him. He of course had selected his best and fanciest clothes. The servants bustled around him, one helped him into a crisp, white shirt with billowing sleeves, he then stepped into a pair of silk breeches, which were tightened at the waist by a golden belt. Levi was then presented with a doublet of deep blue velvet, which he put on. The doublet is fastened with matching gold buttons. After his doublet was on, a servant brings Levi his regal cloak made of only the best blue satin, lined with fur. The cloak is fastened at the neck with a large gold clasp stamped with his family’s crest. Last but certainly not least one of his servants walks up next to him holding his crown on an intricate pillow. Levi picked up his crown and placed it on his head.
He glanced at himself in the floor-length mirror placed in front of him. His reflection looked back at him uninterested. Levi tried to smile but his scars made it look jagged. Sometimes he missed the days before the scars, He immediately stopped and shook his head. He should be proud of his scars, they represent his loyalty to the people and his willingness to lay down his life for them.
His oldest servant- Mary- smiled softly at him. “You look wonderful my king. I’m sure any maiden would be lucky to have you as their husband.”
Levi wanted to scoff and dismiss her but paused. Mary had been by his side since he was shitting in diapers even taking on a motherly role after his had died. He knew Mary like Erwin and Hanji only wanted him to be happy. “Thank you. Is everyone ready for me?”
Mary actually looked surprised that he didn’t dismiss her rudely (like he normally does) she blinked at him in shock then bowed. “I believe Ser Hanji and Ser Erwin are waiting for you by the staircase.” Levi gave a curt nod and waved his servers away. Time to get this party started.
He met Erwin and Hanji at the entrance to the grand hall. Hanji smiled brightly at him. “Well don’t you look pretty?”
He rolled his eyes. He prayed to the gods that he actually found someone so everyone would get off his case. “Shut up. Let’s get this over with.”
Erwin slapped his back. “That’s the spirit.”
Levi nodded to the guards standing at the double doors that when opened would lead to the grand hall. The guards opened the doors and Levi took in the scene before him. At the bottom of the stairs was the hall. The room was brightly lit by chandeliers and candelabras, and decorated with rich tapestries colored in white and blue with gold accents. A long banquet table was set with his finest plates and silverware, and an abundance of food is displayed on platters.
Guests, all dressed in their finest attire, mill about, chatting and laughing while servers circulate with glasses of wine. The room is filled with conversation and the sounds of glasses clinking and utensils clattering.
Hanji shoved him forward. “Go, my little king! Find yourself a new bride.”
The party went silent as they watched Levi walk down the steps. He grabbed a wine glass from a servant walking by. Levi raised his glass and turned toward the crowd. “My people! Eat and drink to your fill.”
His people clapped and cheered and the party resumed. Levi made his rounds around the room making polite conversation, talking about politics and how nice it was that Paradis had been at peace for so long. It was mind-numbingly boring.
A few of his lords introduced him to their daughters. Levi tried to act interested in them but each girl was worse than the last. The only thing they were interested in was how much power and status they would have as queen. No to mention they were dirt stupid. Levi wanted a smart wife. Someone to hold conversations with. Someone that would be able to keep up with him.
The night went on without interest. The king talked to multiple women, each one worse than the last. The longer the night dragged on the more frustrated Levi got. No women had caught his eye.
He was on his tenth? Eleventh? Glass of wine when he caught Erwin walking up to him out of the corner of his eye. He would have been worried Erwin was coming to ask if he found a wife yet but it looked like his right hand man was with another Lord.
Levi racked his brain for the lord's name. He probably should know…but by the looks of the man’s brown pants, wrinkled white shirt and dark blue jacket told Levi the man was a lowly Lord. Probably a lord somewhere in the outer kingdom.
Erwin and the lord stopped in front of him. The man bowed his head. “My king, Thank you so much for hosting this party.”
Levi hummed and looked at Erwin hoping his look got across his confusion. Erwin gave him a knowing smirk. “My king. This is Lord Grisha Yeager of Maria.”
Levi nodded in thought. Maria. He was right in assuming that Grisha was a lowly lord. Maria was one of the small towns that made up the bigger area of Shiganshina. “Lord Yeager it is a pleasure to meet you.”
Lord Grisha made a face of distaste. “Um. My king. We’ve met before. Years ago in Maria.” The lord clasped his hands behind his back and rocked back and forth on his feet. “Your wife was originally from Maria. We met briefly when the two of you came to visit her family.”
Levi tried to remember but as with everything having to do with his wife, he usually spent it drunk and or hung over. He supposed they probably visited Maria when visiting his wife’s family in Shiganshina. He hummed. Uninterested. “Right. Must have slipped my mind.”
Lord Grisha shook his head like he was scared of offending Levi. “No, I apologize. It must be hard to think of the memories. I don’t know how you’re still standing. If I ever lost my wife Carla.” The man sighed like the thought of losing his wife was the end of the world. “I know my girls are so excited to be in the inner city. We are staying here for a few days to explore and see the inner towns.”
Levi cocked his head. How interesting Grisha was the first lord tonight that wasn’t throwing his daughters at him. There must be a reason. They were either hideous and Grisha was ashamed of them or the bastard was keeping them for himself. “Oh? I don’t believe I’ve had the pleasure of meeting your girls.”
Lord Grisha beamed. “Ah yes. Silly me.” He turned and pointed proudly to the table filled with food. Standing at the table was a woman a little younger than him in a gold dress accented with pearls and emeralds and light brown hair done up in a fancy bun. Next to her stood a young woman with pitch-black hair like his done up in a braid and a blood-red dress. Both of them were picking off a plate filled with little cakes and fruit. “That’s my Lady wife Carla and our daughter Mikasa.” Lord Yeager started.
Levi hummed. Neither was his type. Grisha sighed heavily and dropped his hand as almost defeated. “And it looks like my youngest Eren has snuck out of sight. Her guards have trouble with that one.”
Levi arched his good eyebrow. So he had one more daughter Levi had yet to see. “Two daughters and no sons? That’s quite unfortunate.”
Grisha’s smile faltered. “Ah yes. Well, I do have a son from my first marriage but he’s a disgrace.”
Levi really did not care about the family affairs of some Lord. “My my. Sounds like you can’t keep control of your children.” He couldn’t help but muse.
Lord Yeager’s face flashed something unrecognizable but he quickly shook out of it and smiled politely. “Seems so your grace.”
“Father!” A honeyed voice called coming from the crowd behind Grisha. In an instant, the most beautiful goddess appeared next to the lord. She couldn’t be much older than her sister but the differences were astounding. Where Mikasa had a sharp nose and jawline with dark hair, Eren had softer features and what looked like the silkiest brown hair that Levi was sure was spun by the gods themselves. And her eyes. Gods above her eyes sparkled greener than any emerald he had ever seen. She was wearing a regal blue gown that shimmered in the light, its luxurious fabric hugged her curves in all the right places. The deep blue color brought out the dark richness of her hair, which was styled in loose waves that cascaded down her back. The beading and lace detailing on the bodice sparkled, drawing Levi’s eye to her delicate neckline fit with a simple gold necklace. The full skirt flowed around her making her look like she was floating.
She turned to Lord Grisha without even glancing at him. “Father! Mother said Mikasa and I must leave. You promised we could stay out past curfew!”
Lord Yeager looked at him worriedly. Probably because he was terrified Levi would have his daughter killed for not bowing and greeting her King immediately. He grabbed Eren’s arm and hissed high enough for Levi to hear. “My dear. We can talk about this later. This is not the time. Especially since we are in the presence of the King.”
Eren gasped softly, turned, and bowed deeply to him. “Your grace. I apologize. I have never been somewhere so grand! I don’t want this night to end.”
Levi smirked. Usually, he would have the person who outright ignored him beaten and killed. But not this goddess. And as much as Levi was loath to admit Eren greatly interested him. She was the only girl tonight that wasn’t throwing themselves at him in fact she seemed completely uninterested in him. And If the gods knew anything they knew how much Levi loved a challenge.
He waved his hand. Waving her insolence completely off. “It’s quite alright. Though I am sorry if you have to leave. You mustn’t miss out on dessert. I hear my cooks have planned something astonishing .”
Eren pouted her ruby-red lips adorably at him before turning back to her father. “Please, father. Let us stay out just a little longer!”
Grisha sighed. “Very well.”
Eren jumped up excitedly and threw her arms around her father kissing his cheek. “Thank you!”
And then before Levi could get in another word, Eren was hiking up her skirt and running back into the crowd. Levi lost her in the hustle and bustle of the partygoers. If he was insane he would have believed that she was an angel brought down to him only to be whisked away.
Grisha chuckled awkwardly and ran his hands through his hair nervously. “Your grace. Please forgive my daughter. She means no disrespect.”
Levi honestly wasn’t paying that close of attention to the Lord’s words. He was already scanning the crowd again, looking for even a glimpse of dark hair and blue. Erwin who up until this point had been observing the scene quietly cleared his throat and Levi realized that his silence could have been taken as anger.
Levi sighed. Telling himself he’d find her again. “It’s fine. Even I remember being young and excited to be at parties. I know she means no harm.”
Grisha visibly relaxed. He bowed deeply again. “Your kindness knows no bounds. Thank you, my King.”
Levi forced himself not to roll his eyes, everyone knew he was no saint. More importantly, he was over this conversation. He got what he needed from Lord Grisha Yeager. Levi waved his hand. “If you’ll excuse me. It was nice to meet you again, Lord Yeager.” Without another word, Levi walked away. No more fucking around. He had found his new queen…even if she didn’t know it yet.
The king eventually found Eren by the dessert table. She seemed to be trying to decide what type of cake to get. Her eyes squinted and her hand rested on her chin in deep thought. He slinked up beside her and said, “The ones with the blue icing are the best.”
Eren jumped. “Your grace.” She said with a bow. “Thank you for the input.”
Levi grabbed a plate of the blue icing cake and took a small bite with the fork. Eren watched him for a moment before grabbing her own plate of cake that matched his and taking a bite. The king watched in amusement as Eren’s eyes widened in amazement. “By the gods! This is the best cake I’ve ever had!”
Levi chuckled. “Oh? You don’t have cakes in Maria?”
Eren shook her hand. “None that taste like this!”
Humming he made a mental note that Eren seemed to like sweet things. It was important to know all he could about her. They both quickly finished their cakes and passed their plates to the servants. Eren smiled at him, twirling a loose strand of her hair. “So. What is the great king doing talking to me? Sharing a cake with me?”
The king felt his face break into a smirk. “Well, it’s obvious you’re the most beautiful girl here.” Levi took great pride in the way Eren’s face flushed a beautiful red all the way to her ears. “Do you know why I’m having a party tonight?” He continued on.
Eren nodded and tucked a loose hair behind her ear. “I do. Word is you’re looking for a new wife.”
Levi grabbed a wine glass off a passing servant's tray and tipped it toward the goddess standing in front of him. “Correct. What are your thoughts on me finding a queen?”
Eren bit her lip. “Well like the rest of the kingdom, I’m saddened by her death…”
Levi could tell the girl was lying. The way her eyes darted to the side and her voice went up ever so slightly told him everything. He took a sip of his wine. “Don’t lie to me. It’s ok. You can speak your mind. I won’t get mad.”
Eren straightened up. It was rare a man much less the king would ask for a woman’s input. “Promise?”
“Promise.” He said seriously.
Eren’s smile was brighter than any sun he had ever seen. “I’m glad she’s dead. She was a terrible queen.”
Levi almost choked on his wine. He was always told that every citizen loved and revered the dead queen. “Oh? You might be the first person to ever say that.”
Eren shrugged. “It’s true. My father would kill me for saying this to you but everyone in Maria saw how terrible she was.”
Eren was becoming more and more perfect every time she opened her mouth. “And why does a daughter of a lowly lord have such harsh opinions on her dead queen?” He questioned.
Eren narrowed her eyes at him. “Because she was loyal to your father. Not you. It was obvious. I want a queen that is loyal to the sitting king. Not one that gave up his crown because it got boring.”
Oh. Levi was going to have this woman. Eren was correct in assuming that his ex-wife was loyal to his father. In fact, she was supposed to marry his father after Levi’s mother died. But in his fathers ever-present wisdom he forced Levi to marry her since he already had an heir and wished to spend his days fucking anything that moved. His wife never forgave his father for pushing her to the side and Levi suspected that was the reason for whoring herself out. “Very bold accusation. You know you could be killed for saying such things about a retired king?”
Eren grabbed her own wine glass and took a sip. “You’d never kill the most beautiful girl here .” She said it in such a mocking way and it drove him absolutely wild. No one would have ever dared to speak in such a way to him. He’d love to see what else she’d say when they were in private. The king was about to give the girl two options: either marry him right here right now or die but Eren’s black-haired sister interrupted them. Mikasa bowed slightly to him and then grabbed Eren’s arm. “Eren. Father’s looking for you.”
Eren nodded to her sister and then looked back at him. “Looks like our conversation will have to continue at a later time, your grace.” Then for the second time that night Levi was left alone. But he didn’t worry. He was already forming the perfect plan.
Levi did one more walk around the ballroom trying to see if he could find his new bride one last time but it looked like all the Yeagers had left. Oh well. The king called it a night. He had some planning to do.
The next morning Levi couldn’t wait to set his plan into action. He dressed in his simplest attire and went to go find Hanji and Erwin. His friends were sitting in the dining room being served breakfast by his servants like the leeches they were.
Hanji gave him a wide smile. “Good morning sunshine! Have a nice night?”
Levi made a sound from the back of his throat and sat down at the head of the table. He snapped his fingers and the maids raced to bring him his breakfast and morning tea.
Erwin folded his hands in front of him. “So. I noticed you retired quite early last night. Care to explain?”
Levi rolled his eyes. Erwin loved to interrogate him like he was his father. “I’m not a child. I can do as I please.”
Erwin scoffed. “Levi…” he warned. “Have you forgotten the whole point of last night's party?”
The king tried not to smirk. “Like you’d let me forget.”
Hanji squinted their eyes at him. “What’s with that look?”
Levi picked up his teacup and took a sip. “Erwin. Have word sent to the Yeagers. I want the whole family here for afternoon tea, I want the best spread made. My exotic teas, best meats, fruits, and cheeses. Oh and all the sweets we have.”
Hanji, who was taking a sip of tea, actually spewed the liquid across the table in shock. “What?! Why?!” They shrieked.
Erwin smirked over his own tea. “Seems like our king has found a potential wife.”
Hanji whipped their head towards him again. “Is that true?”
Levi shrugged. “Possibly. We shall see how afternoon tea goes.”
Hanji’s eyes gleamed evilly. “Which Yeager?!”
Levi pretended to hum uninterestedly. “Carla.” He joked just to watch both Hanji and Erwin choke on their drinks.
Erwin pounded on his chest and coughed out. “I seriously hope you are joking.”
The king chuckled and stood up. “Just do what I said. I want the Yeagers here before noon.”
Erwin sighed and stood up as well. “As you wish. I’ll send a message.”
Levi nodded. “Good. Make sure you don’t say anything about a marriage proposal.”
Erwin cocked his head in confusion. “Oh?”
Hanji scrambled up next. “Wait!? Which Yeager do you want?”
Levi started to walk out of the dining room. “Ask Erwin.” He called back over his shoulder. The king had more serious matters to attend to. Like talking to his chefs about the spread.
Thankfully he had the servants clean his castle top to bottom every morning and night so he wasn’t too worried about things looking messy. After a very serious talk with the chefs about what he wanted Levi went to put on some more presentable clothes. He chose his brown silk pants, a white button-up shirt, and his blue cloak. It was just his casual wear since he planned an afternoon in his gardens and didn’t want to dirty up his more precious clothes. When he finished dressing he decided to go into his office so he could finish up the last of his plans.
After a while, Erwin knocked on his door and stepped inside. “Levi. The Yeagers carriage is pulling up.”
The king felt himself grin. “Wonderful. Better go greet my guests.”
Erwin stopped him by putting a firm hand on his shoulder before he could fully exit his office. “Are you not going to tell your loyal right-hand man your plans?”
Levi brushed his loyal right-hand man's hand off him. Erwin probably didn’t trust what he had planned. He was probably assuming that Levi was just going to kidnap the girl and force her into marriage. That thought did cross Levi’s mind. And before when- he was a soldier- he totally would have taken whatever virgin caught his eye first. But he was a king- a leader- now. There was no need for such unpleasantness. “I’m the king. Don’t you trust me to know what I’m doing?”
Levi could feel Erwin’s harsh stare at the back of his neck as he walked away. It was probably taking all of Erwin not to say something about taking things slow and to try not to upset the Lord and his family.
The king walked to the entrance hall with purpose. Standing on either side of the heavy wooden doors were two guards standing at attention. Levi waved his hand motioning them to open them. The guards bowed politely and grabbed the golden handles and pulled them open.
Levi was greeted by the Yeager family standing politely at the entrance. Levi quickly glanced over Grisha, Carla, and Mikasa, finally his gaze landed on Eren. She looked just as beautiful as she did last night. Her brown hair looked to have a single braid with small little shiny beads placed throughout her head. She wore a simple floor-length dark green dress that complimented perfectly with her eyes.
He outstretched his hands. “Welcome Lord Yeager and his family. Please. Come in.”
Grisha and Carla glanced nervously at each other before bowing. “Thank you. We are so honored to be invited back to your grace’s home.”
“The pleasure is mine.” He tried to smile but it felt more like a smirk. Levi hoped it wasn’t taken as one of an insane person.
The Yeagers stepped inside and glanced owlishly at the high ceilings and the walls housed his tapestries and banners, depicting the coat of arms of the family that had ruled for over a hundred years.
Levi led them past the roaring fireplace in one corner which was casting warm light over the room, the continued walking passed the grand staircase that would wind up and up to the upper levels of the castle. Before the five of them reached the doors that would lead to the outside area and garden Levi stopped everyone and snapped his fingers loudly.
Mary -as if appearing out of thin air- came running up to them. She was never far from Levi’s side and he liked to joke that she was better at watching him than his best and brightest knights. “Yes, your grace?”
Levi looked at Mary then at his guests. “Mary. Please escort Lady Yeager and her daughters to the garden gazebo. Lord Yeager and I have some business to attend to. We will join you shortly.” He then addressed Lady Yeager. “I won't keep your husband long. Tea and snacks should already be served. Have whatever you like. And if something isn’t up to your standards, immediately tell the servant to fix it under my orders.” Was Levi showing off a little? Yes. Can’t hurt to impress your future in-laws.
Mary nodded. “Of course your grace.” She turned to the ladies. “Come now. You’re in luck. My family has been servants to the crown for generations. I know all the best spots.” Before the ladies left Grisha pressed a kiss to each one’s cheek.
Once the ladies were out of sight Levi motioned for Grisha to follow him. They walked away from the doors leading to the garden and down a long corridor lined with portraits of past kings and their families. Levi could feel the nervousness of the lord walking next to him. But he wasn’t doing anything to alleviate it. They finally arrived at his office doors. Levi dismissed the guards and invited Grisha inside.
The office was grand and stately. The walls were paneled with dark, polished wood, and large windows allowed streams of light to filter in, illuminating the space with a warm glow. A massive desk dominated the center of the room, made of the same rich wood as the walls and adorned with gold leaf behind it was a grand chair. Bookshelves lined one wall, filled with leather-bound tomes and scrolls, and a fireplace crackled in another corner, casting flickering shadows over the room. A large map of the kingdom hung on the wall opposite the king, dotted with markers indicating the locations of important cities and fortresses.
Levi them both over to the fireplace. Grisha looked around the room, nervousness poured from every inch of him. The king clasped his hands behind his back. “Do you have any idea why I’ve called you and your family here?”
Grisha shook his head and stuttered out. “N-no, your grace. I pray we have done nothing to offend you.”
Levi cracked a smile. “Quite the opposite actually. How old is your daughter Eren.”
“Eren?!” Grisha practically squeaked. For a moment Levi was afraid he wasn’t going to get an answer because it looked like the man was going to sprint from the room. “She’s almost 16…your grace.”
Almost 16. Not bad. A little old to still not be married. “Is she betrothed?”
Once again Grisha stuttered out. “B-betrothed?” Levi was getting annoyed. He wasn’t going to repeat himself and he was about to remind the Lord Grisha to speak like a man when he got his answer. “No, your grace. Her mother and I haven’t found a suitable match.”
Levi lightly traced one of the lions carved into the fireplace mantle. Seemed like Grisha was protective of his youngest. Levi decided to get things over with. “Lord Grisha. We are both smart men. I’ll be frank. Eren caught my eye last night. She was the only girl I saw potential in to be the next queen.”
Lord Grisha’s face drained of color and he looked ready to faint. The man licked his lips. “You want to marry my daughter?”
The king nodded and simply said. “Yes.”
The lord nodded but it looked to be in disbelief. “I- I’m not sure what to say.”
Levi scoffed. “Then say yes.” What man didn’t want his daughter to be queen? Or have grandchildren be heirs to a Kingdom?!
Grisha palmed his forehead and brushed back his hair nervously. “I’d have to discuss this with my wife and Eren.”
Levi rolled his eyes. Looks like it was going to be the hard way. “No. I'm going to give you two options. The easy way is you give me your blessing to marry Eren and I’ll promote you and your wife to the Duke and Duchess of Shiganshina. No more being a lord for a small town. Being Duke means you might actually do something for the outer kingdom. Shiganshina is also a lot closer to the capital. Not to mention I’ll let you stay here and visit whenever you want. In addition, I’ll also court Eren, giving her a chance to get to know me better. Now. If you don’t want to give me your blessing we can do this the hard way. I’ll still marry Eren. But it will be by force and I’ll make sure you stay a lowly lord for the rest of your life. Oh. And I can promise you’ll never see Eren again.” Levi felt those options were pretty fair. Either way he finally gets the woman of his dreams and lord Grisha can decide if he wants to do or accomplish something in whatever time he has left.
Grisha looked at him in shock. “Your grace-.”
Levi felt like the lord was going to try to stall him further with another excuse about asking his wife, so he held up his hand. Stopping the idiot from speaking. “Shut your mouth. I don’t want to hear whatever excuse you have. You’re a man no? Are you telling me you let your wife and daughters make all the decisions? No wonder you can’t keep control of them.” That was a low blow and Levi knew it. But he was frustrated, people would kill for an opportunity like this. Was he not being a fair king? He didn’t have to promote Grisha to Duke, he was doing it out of the kindness of his heart.
Grisha clamped his mouth shut and looked down at his feet in silence. Levi was dangerously close to losing his temper. “Are my options not fair enough for you? Would you rather I strip your title and throw you and your girls to the streets?”
Grisha looked absolutely terrified at that prospect. “No! I…” The Lord looked at him seriously. “I would be a fool not to accept your first very generous offer.”
Levi scoffed in annoyance. “Yes, you would be.” The king sighed. He probably should be a little nicer. The lord was just silently staring at him. He tried to push down his bubbling irritation. He should have had Erwin deal with this. “Can I take your silence as a yes?”
Grisha nodded dumbfoundedly. “Uh. Yes.” Levi felt his face break out into a wide grin. Finally. He outstretched his hand which Grisha accepted and the two men nodded and shook hands. “Congratulations Duke Yeager of Shiganshina.”
Grisha made a face like he couldn’t believe what he just did. “Please take care of her. She’s my miracle.”
Levi rolled his eyes. Of course, he was going to worship the goddess. Especially now that she was his. “She’ll be my queen. I’ll treat her with the utmost respect and care. Let’s go share the good news.” It seemed like the lord-whoops- the Duke was only capable of nodding his head in agreement. Did the man want Levi to lose his temper? He should be on his knees thanking Levi for his generosity. But he decided to be merciful, the man seemed to love his daughter, and marrying her off to a man she hadn’t even had a full conversation with was probably terrifying.
They walked in silence to the outside. The backyard of the castle was a picturesque scene, surrounded by tall stone walls that offered privacy and protection from the outside world. A vast expanse of lush green lawn stretched out before the eye, dotted with trees and flowers that added splashes of color. In the center of the yard stood a magnificent fountain, its crystal clear waters sparkling in the sunlight. The sound of the water cascading down the fountain was soothing.
The king and newly appointed Duke walked down the Stone pathways, the pathways ways were winding one could get easily lost if they didn’t know where they were going, leading to secluded nooks and benches where the king liked to sit and read in moments of free time. Vibrant blooms of roses, lilies, and daisies filled the air with their sweet fragrance. Butterflies and hummingbirds flitted from flower to flower, adding to the idyllic ambiance. In one corner of the yard, there was a small pond filled with shimmering with all types of exotic fish.
The two men walked over the bridge arching over the pond, offering a stunning view of the fish swimming below. At the other end of the bridge was a giant white gazebo, that had Ivy twisting around the sides and roof. Inside the gazebo, the lady Yeager and her daughters were sitting at the round table in the middle. They looked to be eating, drinking, and laughing with Mary and…Hanji? Levi clicked his tongue. He should have known Hanji wouldn’t stay away.
Hanji saw him and started waving their arms like a crazy person. He and Grisha walked up to them. Carla was looking at her husband worriedly. Eren seemed to be too interested in the cake’s spread to notice the men walking up to the table. Lady Yeager quickly bowed to him then grabbed her husband’s arm and looked at his face trying to figure out why he looked so pale.
Levi walked past the couple having a silent conversation with their eyes and up to the daughters at the table. Mikasa narrowed her eyes at him like she didn’t trust him. Levi ignored her and offered his hand to Eren who was staring at him in confusion. Eren hesitantly accepted his hand.
“Come. I believe we have a conversation to finish.”
Eren looked at her father silently asking for his permission. Grisha nodded encouragingly. His goddess smiled back at him. “Yes. I guess we do.”
Levi led them away from the gazebo and tried not to smirk at Mikasa’s and Carla’s shocked shouts demanding the lord to tell them what was going on. He could feel Eren’s confused stare as they walked deeper into the garden.
Instead of going back over the bridge towards the castle, Levi turned left and walked straight towards tall hedges shaped to look like gates. Eren’s curiosity must have finally gotten the best of her best she asked. “Um. Your grace? Where are we going?”
Levi chuckled. “To my favorite spot. My mother’s hidden garden.” When Levi was young his mother had a special garden created just for him. It was their little secret no one else knew about it. Mary also knew but only because his mom took care of the weeding and watering and he needed someone to care for it after she died.
His mother's garden was a place of beauty and serenity. It was hidden away from the eyes of most people ,it was surrounded by thickets of trees and large hedges. Eren’s eyes widened. “You want to show me your mother's garden?”
Levi shrugged. “Why not?” She was about to be his wife. He hoped they could sneak off here. As they approached the door entrance, he couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. His mother had created this garden as a refuge from the stresses of his alcoholic father and being queen, and every time he entered, he felt as though he was stepping into a different world.
Still holding on to Eren’s hand he led them through the entrance revealing a lush oasis. A narrow path wound its way through the garden, surrounded by beds of colorful flowers and fragrant herbs. To one side was a small pond filled with lily pads and shimmering goldfish. To the other side was a grove of fruit trees, heavy with ripe produce.
Levi heard Eren gasp and in awe in amazement. He smiled knowing exactly how Eren felt. Levi always felt at peace whenever he entered. The king had always loved this place; it reminded him of his mother and the good times they had.
At the center of the garden stood a marble bench, where the King often sat to read. Levi remembered having countless picnics right here with his mother. He walked himself and Eren over to it and offered Eren a seat. “Your grace… this place is…” She said, lifting her skirt and sitting down.
Levi smiled. “Beautiful? Amazing? Wonderful?” Those were only some of the words to describe this place.
Eren nodded in agreement. “All of those and more! I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Levi nodded and sat down next to her. “My mother had it made for me-us after I was born.”
Eren gave him a small smile. “I wasn't alive when she was queen. But I’ve heard she was kind and fair.”
Levi shrugged. “She tried her best. My mother never wanted to be queen.” Like his ex his mother was actually promised to his uncle- a lord- so she could live in the country and be at peace. But his father hated his brother and stole his wife for himself.
Eren hummed and looked around again fiddling with her hands. It was obvious she was dancing around asking him something. “Ask me.” He decided to have mercy on her.
Eren looked at him with wide eyes. “What?”
“Ask me whatever question you’re so nervous to ask.” He said, trying not to smirk.
Eren chewed on her lip. “What am I doing here? And I don’t mean in your mother's garden. I mean here back at your castle.”
Levi hummed. “Because I wanted to finish our conversation.” That wasn’t a total lie.
Eren rolled her eyes. “Bullshite! You said it yourself I’m just a daughter of a lowly lord. What does the king want with me !?”
“You can’t take a guess?” He joked.
Eren shook her head. “It’s something serious. Whatever you and father talked about. I've never seen him look so freaked out.”
The king decided he had joked with her enough. He grabbed her hands and stared into those beautiful green eyes. “I want to marry you.”
Eren looked at him like he was making fun of her. “Is this a joke?”
Levi shook his head and clutched her hand harder. “Never. I want you.”
Eren let go of his hand and shook her head. “I-what?”
“It’s pretty simple. I want you to be my queen.”
Eren stood up and started pacing in front of him. “This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening.” She mumbled to herself.
Levi chuckled and stood up. “Oh but it is. Last night you were the only girl that was honest with me. All anyone else could talk about was how much power and status they’d receive by becoming queen.”
Eren blushed. “I-I was just having a conversation with you. I didn’t mean-.”
Levi tried to reach for her. “I know. But that’s what caught my eye. Your beauty and kindness. More than I've seen in a long time.”
Eren chuckled awkwardly. “So you want the daughter of a lowly lord to be your wife?”
Levi nodded and pulled Eren close. “I do. Now say yes and I promise to treat you right.”
The beauty put a hand on his chest and pushed back. “What about my father…m-my family?”
Levi grinned. “You don’t have to worry about that. My little meeting with your father? I promised him an increase in station. He and your mother will become the new Duke and Duchess of Shiganshina.”
Eren's eyes widened. “Seriously? Just like that?”
Levi refrained from kissing Eren. He wouldn’t ruin her- just yet-. “Just like that. I even promised to properly court you.”
Eren’s face broke into a grin. “Are you sure you want me to be queen? I’ve been told power kinda goes to my head.”
Levi couldn’t help himself. He twirled then dipped Eren grinning wickedly. “I need a powerful queen.”
Eren’s laugh rang out through the garden. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him close. “Guess I’m your new queen.”
That’s all Levi needed to hear. Paradis was never going to be the same. In the best way possible.
