Work Text:

Atsumu loves Christmas.

He loves receiving gifts, of course (who doesn’t, right?), but what he loves the most about it is giving gifts. No matter how fun opening his gifts is, nothing beats going Christmas shopping and trying to find the perfect gifts for his friends and family. The feeling he gets when he sees the smile on their face when they open his gifts is the best reward he could ever get.

So yes, Atsumu has always preferred buying Christmas gifts rather than receiving them. That's why he was so confident when his teammates decided to do a Secret Santa gift exchange this year. No matter who he gets, he knows that he’ll get them the best gift they’ve ever received.

So, why?

Why has it been now two weeks since he picked Kiyoomi’s name, and he still has absolutely no clue at all about what he’s gonna get him?

And it’s not as if he didn’t try. He went shopping for two whole days with ’Samu and Suna, trying to find something for his teammate – or at least have an idea of what to get him. But nothing.

Absolutely nothing at all came into his mind. Two whole days of shopping for nothing. Atsumu was now frankly starting to lose hope (along with his lifespan apparently, if the look on Suna’s face was any indication).

Here's the thing: Atsumu has kind of a crush on Kiyoomi (more than a crush if you ask his brother, or Suna, or apparently anyone at this point). This gift can maybe be Atsumu’s entrance ticket into Kiyoomi’s love life, he absolutely can’t mess this up. He needs to find Kiyoomi the perfect gift. This gift is the gift that will impact his whole love life.

“Don’t ya think yer exaggerating, scrub?! He won’t date ya because ya find a good gift, just like he won’t reject ya if ya can’t find a good gift, ’Tsumu.”

“Shut up ’Samu! Yer not helping!”

Suna chuckled. “’Samu's right though, your gift won’t change anything. If you want a boyfriend, ya gotta ask him out.”

Atsumu groaned. “I hate ya both. I would confess if I think I have a chance, dumbasses!”

Suna leaned onto Osamu's shoulder to whisper something in his ear.

“Does he really think Sakusa doesn’t like him back?”

Osamu chuckled, “he is the dumbass.”

Two weeks have passed, the MSBY Christmas party is in three days and Atsumu still hasn’t got Kiyoomi’s gift. It’s safe to say that he’s panicking and making it everyone’s (read: Osamu and Suna’s) problem.

“Just get him some wipes and cleaning supplies, ya know he’d love that.” Osamu says, after two very long hours of hearing his twin complain.

“That's a shitty Christmas gift ’Samu. Besides, I always have some in my bag in case he needs them, so he doesn’t need more.”

“You what now?” Suna interrupted, “Damn dude, you’re in deeper than I thought,” he laughed.

“Shut up, Sunarin! Yer not helping.” He could feel his cheeks heating up.

It's been more than two hours that he’s pacing in his brother’s restaurant, trying to brainstorm new ideas – each one seeming more stupid than the previous ones.

A ring? Way too presumptuous. A necklace then? Too official for just a (possibly unrequited) crush. A candle? Too simple. Flowers? Not a Christmas gift.

“Come onnnn, think!” he said to himself repeatedly.

He went into Kiyoomi’s apartment only once before, so he didn’t really have time to look at the furniture and decorations that the raven has or needs. Although he does remember that it was pretty simple and not too personal.

He could maybe offer the raven a picture framed of their team? Even if Kiyoomi pretends he doesn’t care, Atsumu knows very well that he loves the team.

Yes, okay, that seems like a good idea. It’s settled. Just like that, he left Onigiri Miya and was on his way to the mall.

He quickly went to have a picture of the team developed and bought a nice but simple frame that he thinks Kiyoomi might like. He has to admit that he was proud of how nicely he wrapped up the gift.

On his way back home, he opted for the route through the Christmas market. Atsumu has always loved Christmas markets and the holiday spirit that they inhabit.

He stopped on his track when he saw an old man’s booth with little homemade keychains. A specific one drawing his attention – it was a little wooden keychain with a small fox plushie attached to it. Atsumu found it really cute.

When looking at the price section on the booth, he saw that initials could be carved into the wooden chain if he paid a little extra. That was it.

To be completely honest, Atsumu really liked the idea of Kiyoomi carrying with him every day an object that he gifted him. Without realizing it, he was dumbly smiling at the keychain; and the next thing he heard was his own voice addressing the seller.

“Hi, I would like this keychain, please.” he said, pointing at it. The seller took it in his hand, silently asking the blonde with a nod of the head if it’s the right one. “Yes, that one! And could you carve the initials ‘SK’ on it, please?”

“Sure thing! Give me about ten minutes and you’ll get it. You can go see other booths and come back later if you don’t want to wait here.” answered the nice old man.

“I'll do that then! See ya soon.”

Atsumu left the booth and made his way to the center of the market to take a look at the gigantic Chritsmas tree that was standing right there. He also bought himself a hot chocolate since the weather was quite cold.

About ten minutes later, he was back at the booth and was able to see the result right before the seller wrapped the keychain in a nice Christmas wrapping. The initials ‘SK’ were carved on one side of the wooden chain with a very nice and sophisticated handwriting, it was beautiful and discreet – “just like Kiyoomi,” he thought to himself, smiling.

He paid for the keychain and thanked the artist before leaving and making his way home. This time, he was confident about his gift. The party is in three days, he couldn’t wait.

December 24, 8:35pm, MSBY Christmas party. Everyone is chatting and having fun while Atsumu is having the biggest gay panic of his life after having seen none other than Sakusa fucking Kiyoomi in a fancy suit and unbuttoned shirt for the first time ever.

The party was really nice, the little chalet that the coach had rented for the event is really nice, and the fact that it snowed earlier in the day makes all of this even more enjoyable. For someone like Atsumu who has a huge Christmas spirit, this couldn’t be any better. (With the exception of the fact that Kiyoomi looks hot as fuck, and how he wasn’t sure if his gift was any good at all anymore.)

Putting those arising insecurities at the back of his mind, he decided that he should enjoy the party. If he were going to be ridiculed by Kiyoomi for not liking his gift and rejecting him, he might as well enjoy his time before that.

The party was indeed really nice and the food was really good. Atsumu was having fun. Although he got a bit overwhelmed at some point due to all the noises inside the small chalet, so he decided to go outside for a while.

The snow really does make the landscape look prettier. He sat on a bench around the bonfire that had been lit about an hour ago in case some people wanted to roast some marshmallows. Which is exactly what he did.

While he was about to roast his third one, he heard footsteps coming his way. And when he turned around, he saw none other than Sakusa Kiyoomi standing behind him.

“Omi! Hi.”

“Are you okay, Miya?”

“Huh? Yes? Why wouldn't I be?”

“Well, you love Christmas yet you left the Christmas party.”

Atsumu didn’t remember having told Kiyoomi that he loved Christmas, but he decided to not ask.

“I wanted marshmallows is all,” he replied instead, with a smile on his face.

“Hm,” was the only response the raven gave for a moment. “Well, I'd like some marshmallows too.” He added, making his way to the bench as well.

It has been five minutes since Kiyoomi joined him outside and there was no noise apart from the charcoal noise coming from the bonfire.

None of the two men were talking and Atsumu was starting to feel uneasy. Kiyoomi must have felt that because he broke the silence first.

“I can leave you alone if you want, I know I kind of interrupted you just now.”

“No!” he almost yelled. He cleared his throat awkwardly before adding “I mean- No, please stay. Yer not disturbing at all.”

“Okay,” the raven replied and Atsumu could swear that he saw his cheeks reddening (he must be cold, he assumed).

Another awkward silence was happening and Atsumu was starting to freak out about his gift. He left the inside of the chalet about 10 minutes ago and it was around 11:20pm, so it must be around 11:30pm now, which means it’s almost time for him to give Kiyoomi his gift.

“Are you sure you’re okay, Miya? You look nervous.”

The blonde chuckled, “I am kinda nervous Omi, yeah.”

“Oh,” the raven replied, “Why? What’s wrong?”

“Hum-”

“I know I don't appear to be very talkative, but you can talk to me if you want,” he smiled.

God, Atsumu will never get tired of seeing this smile, ever.

“I know, Omi, I know.” he smiled too. “It's really nothin’ important though, it’s about my Secret Santa!”

“Oh,” he paused, “I'm sure whoever you got will be happy to receive your gift.” he smiled once again.

Atsumu chuckled nervously before raising his head and looking Kiyoomi in the eyes. “It’s you, Omi. Yer my Secret Santa giftee.”

Kiyoomi’s eyes widened and his cheeks darkened. “I- I am?”

“Yeah,” Atsumu replied, chuckling nervously once again. He put his hand in his pocket to reach his gifts – the advantage of having small gifts is that they fit in his coat’s pockets.

He handed Kiyoomi the framed picture and kept the keychain in his pocket for now. “Here, Omi. Merry Christmas,” he said with a shy but honest smile.

“Thank you,” Kiyoomi replied with an equally shy smile.

Nervous, Atsumu started talking even before Kiyoomi had finished unwrapping the gift. “I noticed last time that your apartment needed a little bit more personal decorations, so I figured that this would be nice!”

Kiyoomi was looking at the picture with a smile on his face, “that’s a good sign,” Atsumu thought.

“Yes, that’s nice. Thank you, Miya.” the raven replied, with a bigger smile than the first one.

“I- Hum,” he laughs nervously. “I have something else.” Atsumu was now fidgeting. “I saw it and immediately thought about you but it’s totally fine if you don’t like it, I can always keep it!”

He heard Kiyoomi’s soft laugh. “Relax!” he smiled, “I’m sure I’ll love it.”

With that, Atsumu put his hand back in his pocket and took his second gift. He gave the nicely wrapped keychain to Kiyoomi and watched (read: stared at) him unwrapping it. Kiyoomi was staring at the keychain.

Kiyoomi has been staring at the keychain for about 30 seconds and was still /not/ saying anything. Atsumu's heart was beating so fast that he could hear it. He started panicking again, “oh my god Kiyoomi hates the gift, that’s my one-way ticket to friendzone forever,” was the only thing Atsumu had in mind. His mouth opened of its own accord and he started rambling.

“Hum- Like I said it’s okay if you don’t like it, Omi! I can take it back! Well I mean- It has your initials and stuff but surely someone else has the same as yours right? I'll find someone with the same initials and gift it to them, that's okay!” he stopped to catch his breath before continuing.

“I wanted to give you something a little bit more personal than the framed picture, something that could only make you think of me when you see it.” He stopped talking when he realized what he just said, which was at the same time that Kiyoomi also realized what he just said and looked up to meet Atsumu’s eyes for the first time since he opened the gift. The blonde could feel his cheeks burning up, he was so nervous that he was sure he could die any minute.

“I- I mean,” Atsumu chuckled nervously, scratching his neck awkwardly. “I should have asked you what you wanted, it would have been easier. Well I couldn't ask you because it would have ruined the whole ‘Secret Santa’ thing but I could have asked Hinata to ask you!”

“Ats-” Kiyoomi tried to interrupt the blonde’s rant just to be interrupted back.

“I should have known. I should have known you wouldn’t like that. A keychain is a way too basic gift. You probably have dozens of them alread-”

“No, I don't. Please listen to me Atsum-”

“What do ya like, Omi? Tell me and I'll buy it for ya! Tell me what ya want!” He finally stopped his rant, completely out of breath but looking expectantly at his five-year-long-crush for an answer.

“You.”

“What.”

“I want you.”

Atsumu's eyes and mouth were wide open, “Huh? Um- I- Omi? What-”

The raven chuckled. “Damn Atsumu, did I break you?”

Atsumu. Atsumu. Atsumu.

“Ya called me Atsumu,” he whispered to himself, almost inaudibly. But he knew Kiyoomi still caught it because he heard him laugh softly.

“I sure did, Atsumu.”

And that’s when he saw it. The smile on Kiyoomi’s face, along with the redness on his cheeks. It’s probably the most endearing sight he has ever seen. No, it’s definitely the most endearing sight he’s ever seen, he’s sure of it.

“I- I don’t understand, Omi.”

“I want you, Atsumu.”

Two minutes passed and Atsumu still hadn’t said anything, Kiyoomi was getting more and more uncomfortable. “Damn- Who even invented love confessions in the first place? This is so humiliating,” he thought.

Atsumu, on the other side, looked thunderstruck, “I want you, Atsumu” on repeat in his head.

“What da ya mean ya want me? I'm confused, Omi. Please don’t play with me.” He said after some time. The uncertainty and vulnerability clear in Atsumu's voice are what brought Kiyoomi back to the present.

“I am not joking, Atsumu. I have been wanting you for a long time now. I-” he stopped, his face crimson. He cleared his throat before continuing, “I love you, Atsumu.”

Atsumu's eyes widened even more (Kiyoomi didn’t know it was possible). “Me? Ya love me?!”

“Hum- Yes? I thought it was pretty obvious.”

“Oh,” he paused. “Oh my god.” he smiled, “Ya love me!”

Kiyoomi swears that he has never seen something more beautiful than Atsumu’s face right at that moment. The blonde’s cheeks were tinted in red and his smile was so big that it was touching his eyes. His eyes. Kiyoomi could drown himself in those honey eyes. The raven was so lost in his thoughts, admiring the other’s face that he almost missed his next words.

“I love ya too, Omi! I love ya so much!”

Now it’s Kiyoomi’s turn to smile to his eyes, all the pressure of his possible unrequited love falling off his shoulder. He was so happy.

“Atsumu, would you like to be my boyfriend?”

The blonde jumped into the raven’s arms, hugging him as if his life depended on it.

“Yes! Of course yes, Omi! I want ta be yer boyfriend!”

And when they kissed for the first time, everything felt so natural. As if they’re meant to be, time seemed to have stopped. When their lips finally separated after what felt like eternity, they were both smiling so widely that they looked lovestruck. They chuckled, both blushing from cheeks to ears before opening their mouths simultaneously.

“Merry Christmas, Omi.”

“Merry Christmas, Atsu.”

And their lips rejoined for the second time of a long list to come.

Atsumu may have gotten Kiyoomi as his Secret Santa giftee, but he was sure that he just won the best Christmas gift ever.
