More often than not, Harley had ridiculous ideas pop into her head for no particular reason. After all these years, Ivy could say that it was pretty much the norm to get involved in some ridiculous ruse courtesy of her girlfriend, but her plans usually had a logical explanation (as idiotic as it could be).
This time, Ivy couldn't comprehend why they were doing this.
“Remind me again why we are going to this class reunion? We actually didn't go to Riddler University, less alone graduated from it. And why are they even having a class reunion a year after the first generation graduated? It makes absolutely no sense”, Ivy complained as she laid on their bed, the one in their bedroom at their own apartment that wasn't owned by Selina.
She loved her friend's apartment, don't get her wrong, but she was glad to have her own space now instead of living in a place where she was constantly worried about her girlfriend or their friends accidentally trashing it. It wasn't good for her stress levels.
Ivy saw Harley walk from their closet to their vanity table, ready to start on her makeup now that she had finally settled in an outfit for the occasion. The redheaded woman didn't take as long as her girlfriend to get ready, so she was planning on doing it a few minutes before they were supposed to leave.
“So…” Ivy heard Harley drag the word, and she immediately knew what it meant. It was her I did something and I didn't tell you voice, and most of the time it meant bad news. She truly hoped tonight wasn't one of those times.
“Harls, what did you do?” Ivy asked carefully, sitting straight on the bed to pay more attention to her girlfriend's next words.
“Nothing bad, I promise!” Harley replied quickly, turning away from the mirror in front of her to look at Ivy as she said those words before going back to her original position and getting busy looking for her mascara in her makeup bag. “But I'm actually a Riddler University graduate and this is in fact my class reunion,” the blonde woman said with a shrug as she started applying foundation on her face.
Stunned by her girlfriend's words, it took several seconds for Ivy to finally react to Harley's statement. “Wait, what?” Ivy asked, clearly confused, before gathering her thoughts and opening her mouth once again. “Babe, when did that even happen? Because, unless you were secretly sneaking around at odd hours of the day, I don't think you actually attended classes at their campus,” she concluded as she moved to sit at the edge of their bed to be closer to the blonde woman.
Harley met Ivy's eyes on the mirror as she kept doing her makeup, their gazes locking as she replied to her girlfriend. “Remember all those times a couple of years ago when I would use my laptop and you thought I was gaming? Well, the truth is that I was either taking online classes or doing homework,” she explained easily.
“Why didn't you tell me?” Ivy asked, both confused and hurt by her girlfriend keeping that kind of information from her. Education was something that both of them had cared about deeply back in the day, and their careers were very dear to them, so for Harley to keep this a secret instead of sharing it with Ivy made the green woman feel some type of way.
“It's stupid,” Harley replied trying to sound nonchalant, but failed terribly because she was biting her bottom lip, which was something that she only did when she nervous.
“Getting a better education is never stupid, and you, more than anyone else, should know that by now,” Ivy tried to encourage her girlfriend with her words, and they seemed to work their magic before after letting out a deep sigh, Harley turned on her vanity stool and looked at Ivy with shy eyes, something that didn't happen often.
“I got a Minor in Plant Science,” Harley replied almost timidly as she bit her bottom lip once again, and for a moment Ivy thought that she had imagined the blonde woman's reply because there was no way she had just said what she thought she had said. “I just wanted to understand better what you do, Ives. You're always so passionate about your projects and I used to feel bad for not getting everything you would say when talking about your plants, so when I saw the minor on their website, I thought it was perfect. With time, I started understanding more and more about what you do and, Ives, you're a genius. I always knew that you were smart, but I never quite dimensioned how much. And I'm so proud of what you do,” Harley finished her speech with a sweet smile.
For a while, Ivy didn't know what to say, too affected by her girlfriend's kind words, and for the millionth time, she was reminded of all the reasons why she had fallen in love with the blonde woman. Moving closer to Harley, she took her pale hands and interlaced her fingers with her green ones.
“Peanut, that's the sweetest thing that anyone has ever done for me,” Ivy said while giving her hands a squeeze. “I love you, Harls,” she declared with a smile that matched her girlfriend's.
“I love you, too, Ives,” Harley replied before leaning in to press her lips with Ivy's in a loving kiss.
“Why don't we finish getting ready so I can go meet some of your ex-classmates?” Ivy suggested after pecking her lips once more, standing up and walking to their closet afterwards.
“There was this guy, Marlon, who I wanted to murder after one of our group projects. He didn't do anything! And the professor wouldn't listen to us about removing him from our team. It was bullshit! So I went and smashed his car with my bat one day,” Harley told the story as she kept doing her makeup and Ivy looked for something to wear, and as she laughed at her girlfriend's anecdote, she couldn't help but think about how normal their lives were some days.
In days like today, they weren't the anti-heros the residents of Gotham had gotten used to; they were just Harley and Ivy, two women in love navigating life together.
She wouldn't change their lives for anything.
