Work Text:
It’s an average Saturday morning and Petit’s reading a book in the living room, one of the two that she borrowed from the public library. From the kitchen, she could hear her papa cooking when the doorbell rings. Without lifting her head, she listens to her papa walking towards the door. Her interest is slightly piqued once he unlocks it, finally looking up completely once he asks, “And just who do we have here? What brings you here today, Miss. Kaai Yuki?”
Standing at the door dressed in a red jacket and a yellow scarf is Yuki, her next-door neighbour, same grade classmate, and on top of it all, her best friend. Despite her cheeks red from the cold, Yuki has a hopeful expression as she asks, "Is Petit home? I want to play with her today."
Kneeling down to the girl's level, the green-haired man smiles. "Well, let's see. Petit?" He turns his head towards Petit, who had walked to the door once she realized her friend had arrived. "Miss. Yuki wants to play with you today."
For a moment, the quiet girl hesitates. Normally she would prefer to be reading the books she borrowed from the library, but Yuki was here and besides, the snow looks fluffy outside. Those books could always be read another day.
"Okay." She nods and seeing Yuki's face glow with excitement is enough to make herself smile.
"Petit, make sure you dress in warm clothes." Her papa reminds her, who nods and quickly goes to her room to change. When Petit finally back downstairs dressed in a thick green sweater and pants, Yuki sitting in the living room while her jacket hangs on the stair railing. She can hear her father in the kitchen again.
"I'm ready now." Petit said, opening the little closet by the door to grab her jacket.
Immediately Yuki jumps from her seat and grabs her jacket as soon as she reaches the staircase. "Yay!"
As soon as she pulls her boots on and Yuki’s wearing her earmuffs, Petit opens the front door. “Papa, we’re going outside now.” Despite knowing that her papa could see her from the kitchen window, she still waits to hear his response.
Fortunately, they don’t have to wait long because as soon as her papa says, “Alright, you two have fun”, the pair is already closing the door behind them.
The cold wind nips at Petit’s skin, and she shivers instinctively, pulling her wool hat lower as though it would protect her face rather than her head. “What are we doing today?” She asks, her green eyes watching her friend as the pigtailed girl takes hold of her hand.
"I wanna make snow angels!" Yuki exclaimed although with her normally soft voice, it sounds more like a whispery shout.
However, Petit only had a confused expression, her nose scrunching up ever so slightly. "What are 'snow angels'?"
"You don't know?" Tilting her head, the younger girl looked at her friend in surprise that quickly vanished into a smile once again. Quickly, she took Petit by the hand, dragging her towards the snow. "I'll show you!"
There were times when she remembered that this was one of the reasons why Yuki was considered the most friendly and helpful in their class. She was always willing to help other students when Mr. Hiyama was occupied with other adult things, not to mention that she friendly towards everyone.
As soon as they stepped onto the yard, the faint crunching of snow could be heard from underneath their boots. Once Yuki seemed to deem the space around them as good, she released Petit's hand.
"You can watch first then follow me." Yuki suggested, before putting some space between them. Lying down, she instructed, "So first, we have to lie down. And then we have to move like this." Giggling, she began moving her arms and legs in a way that reminded Petit of jumping jacks except while lying on the ground and the snow around her curving.
Once she was stopped moving her limbs, Yuki raised her arms up. "Help me up, please?"
Taking hold of her friend's hand, Petit pulled the younger girl to her feet, who stumbles a little as soon as the green-haired girl lets go but is quick to balance herself. Happily, and seemingly uncaring about the snow on her back, Yuki pointed at the ground. "And that's a snow angel."
Petit stared. "Huh. I think I get it now."
"Do you want to try now?" The dark-haired girl asked, her expression hopeful.
"Okay." She stepped back a little, not wanting to overlap with the Yuki's snow angel. Lying down, Petit felt herself shiver from the freezing touch of the snow, glad that she was wearing thick clothes that mostly kept the cold at bay. Scrunching up her face a little, the green-haired girl copied Yuki's movements until she felt satisfied.
Once Petit managed to get to her feet, she looked down at her snow angel. It was just a little longer than Yuki's, which made sense considering she was the taller between the two albeit just from a few centimeters, but the curves were just as round.
Her hands flew towards her mouth and with a small gasp, Yuki exclaimed, "That's a really good snow angel, Petit! Look, they look like they're best friends now!" She pointed at how close the two snow angels were.
While unsure if her reddened cheeks are from the praise or the cold, the green-haired girl smiles shyly from hearing how joyful her friend sounds. "Thanks. Let's make lots now!"
"Okay!" Nodding, Yuki lied down once again on the snowy floor. "Let's make a whole field of them!" The idea sounded appeasing to Petit, who quickly followed her friend's action and began moving her limbs once again.
The rest of the afternoon was filled giggling as the two girls covered the Macne's front yard with as many snow angels their little bodies could make as possible until Petit's papa called them inside for a warm lunch that included a freshly baked apple pie.
