Work Text:
This was not how Gavin expected his day to go, waking up to his fiance and work partner cuddled up to him. He had finally gotten to a point in his life where he could actually say he was happy with where he was and happy with the people he knew.
And yet here he found himself, standing in a hostage situation where Nines was the one at gunpoint in front of him, they had been chasing a suspect in a case where the perpetrator was kidnapping people and dumping their bodies after almost a week every time god knows what he was doing to them.
The bodies were always too mangled to properly find clues as to what exactly happened, the only thing they knew was that they were kept mostly unharmed for the whole week until right before he killed them and destroyed them to cover up his tracks.
The only reason they had someone to investigate and go to question is because of a security camera picking up on the man’s face a block away from one of the dumping sites.
But here they were, he had somehow known they were coming before they arrived, quickly taking them down as he tazed Nines and pointed a gun at Gavin, effectively maneuvering the short circuited android over to him as leverage.
“Put the gun down.” Gavin desperately wanted to get to Nines, he could see the damage done wasn’t permanent and more incapacitating but he still wanted this over with as soon as possible.
“Not a chance detective, you put your gun down before I taze this your precious android again, it’s up to you.” He was giving Gavin a leveled stare, not taking his eyes off the detective.
The man had looked him up and down a few times as Gavin held his gun even tighter, not following his request, seemingly making the man intrigued.
Nines was starting to gain consciousness in the corner of Gavin’s vision, letting his eyes flicker down to his partner.
“Nines? Are you okay?” Gavin got a small hum in return, letting him know the other had heard him but wasn’t able to answer him at the moment.
“He isn’t the one you should be worried about, you are the one who I want, he is merely leveraged.” The man had a small smile on his face that made his brain scream at him to get away.
“What the fuck are you saying?” Gavin didn’t want to know but he also needed to give backup time to arrive, and he needed to keep his attention away from his partner, to give the other time to figure out a way out of this.
“I have no interest in androids, no matter how unique they seem to be.” As he spoke he kept his taser held firmly against Nines neck, the android slouched over in front of the man.
“You’re fucking sick, what makes you think I’m going anywhere with you?” He knew the man could probably make him do anything if he kept Nines hostage, but he didn’t need the psychopath to know that.
Nines was starting to blink, scanning his surroundings as he assessed his situation, previously scrambled from the tasing, LED spinning a deep yellow instead of red as it had been the last few minutes. Giving Gavin a look to tell him not to say anything about his return from unconsciousness.
“You know very well detective, that I prefer my toys alive and well. For a while at the very least.” He gave Gavin another sick smile as the implications were sewn into his words.
Knowing the man only wanted him and wouldn’t pay much mind to Nines made Gavin loosen up a bit, still tense but no longer risking his partner's life as well as his own. He needed to figure out what he could do to stop the fucker from touching the other and get a chance to get at least one of them out of here.
The guns were still trained on each other, though knowing the man wanted him alive made his threat seem less imposing, more of an insurance in case he tried anything.
As soon as the thought crossed his head he instantly knew it was his best option if he was going to get them both out alive, not caring too much about what would happen to the criminal in the end.
“Yeah well fuck you then, cause I’m not doing that. How about instead you let my partner go?” The other scoffed a bit, amused by Gavin’s words.
Nines just gave Gavin a look, trying to figure out what he was planning, LED spinning a bit faster than it had been, he couldn’t figure out his plan, his words would obviously not convince their captor to let them go.
“Thought you’d say that. How about this, either you let him go or you wont even get the chance to get near me, since I know you want to keep me alive so fucking much.” Gavin then turned his gun away from the man, instead twisting it up and under his chin, he knew it was risky, but given that the man was unhinged and seemed to want Gavin alive it was his best bet.
Nine's eyes widened and tried to lurch forward towards him, to try and get him to stop, voice simulator still malfunctioning as he tried to call for Gavin.
“G-vin! No, s-op this!” He couldn’t get the words out right, but by the expression Gavin gave him he could tell the other understood him, grip not faltering on the handle of the gun as he locked eyes with Nines.
Nines didn’t understand what Gavin was doing, he wanted him to stop this at once, why was he doing this?
The man seemed just as surprised, his smile falling as he pressed the taser further into the android’s neck as he started moving away, making him go still again even after the outburst. He wanted the detective alive, he would be no use to him dead yet, he didn’t predict this outcome at all, he was starting to panic a bit, control of the situation now hanging between the two of them.
“Let him go or I will pull the trigger, you know I will, and what then for you?” Gavin could see the tension in the room rise, the cold exterior of the man now cracking as he was losing the thing that he wanted in the situation.
“Stop that! Put the gun down now! What about your partner? Just give it up!” He was frustrated and nervous, the detective looked serious.
Giving Nines one last look and a small smile Gavin turned his attention away from his panicking partner that was desperately trying to figure out how to get out of the position they were in, face showing just how worried and alarmed he was at Gavin’s turn of events.
“Gavin please- don’t you fucking dare do this to me.” Nines didn’t know how to make the other listen to him, he wasn’t quite back to perfect shape, bugs in his system popping up every few seconds from the shock he had.
“Fine then, One.” Gavin’s finger checked to make sure the safety was off as he pressed the gun further up into his skin, he sure as fuck hoped Nines could get away if not intervene while the guy was distracted on him.
He had already settled on the fact he was going to have to pull the trigger one way or another, he couldn’t bluff his way out of this, that's for sure. At least Nines would be okay is all he thought as he locked eyes with the now wide eyed and panicking man in front of him.
“Stop! What are you doing?!”
“Two.” His finger tightened on the trigger a bit.
“Stop this right now!”
As he was about to say one, a gun went off, his shoulder yanking to the side as he was shot in the arm, his own gun clattering from his grip as he staggered backwards at the hit, clasping his fingers into the wound with a hiss of pain.
As the shot rang out multiple things happened as Gavin’s body was twisted, a voice screamed his name and Nines knocked the man to the ground as he was no longer focusing any of his attention on him, kicking a leg out and twisting the arm with the gun behind his back as he fell.
Soon enough the man was restrained on the ground, gun kicked away from him as Nines rushed over to Gavin.
“You fucking idiot! What were you thinking?! What the fuck were you thinking?” Nines was frantically checking Gavin over for any other injuries, hands sliding over Gavin’s neck and face in a frenzy.
Gavin groaned as Nines finally clamped down on his arm, the bullet having thankfully exited the wound and having left a clean shot into him.
“I could have lost you- you are never fucking doing that to me again! I couldn’t do anything except sit there and watch- I had to watch you hold a gun to yourself Gavin!” The android would be having a panic attack if his breathing was something he actually needed, internal fans working double time to make up for his panic.
Gavin felt guilty, he knew it was his best bet for getting Nines out alive, and him maybe out alive, but he would do it again if it meant Nines didn’t get hurt. He wrapped his good arm around the android, trying to get him to calm down a bit as he rested his face on the other's neck.
“I’m sorry, I’m really sorry Nines, I couldn’t figure out what else to do, it seemed like a good idea at first. Sorry, I promise I won’t do it again.” He muttered into Nines shirt, he was exhausted, he hadn’t even gotten coffee yet today other than that morning, being swept away to chase the man as soon as he was about to get another.
Nines held his close, clutching to Gavin as if he was going to pull away from him, clearly still upset at him.
“Don’t ever do that again. I can’t do that again Gavin.”
“Okay, I’m sorry.”
They stood there for another minute before Gavin yawned, blinking hard a couple of times before he closed them and leaned into the grip around him, not caring about the bullet wound in his arm anymore, too tired to care.
The events of the day drained him of any care in the world.
“It’s okay, backup should be here shortly and then we can get you fixed up and back home, I promise.”
Gavin just hummed in response, he would never trade this for anything in the moment, just enjoying his partners arms around him and the silence they were surrounded with, the man left forgotten on the floor unconscious nearby.
“I love you.”
“I love you too, so much Gavin.”
