What Are You Afraid Of?

Summary:

Alex, currently playing hero, runs into some angst hallucinogens.

Work Text:

Alex is in the apartment. Which is wrong, they know, they were in a fight- not at home- just seconds ago.  But they still go to Morgan's door. The knob turns as they reach for it.  The door swings open and Morgan collapses into Alex's arms like a puppet with their strings cut.

"What's wrong?" Alex asked immediately.

One of Morgan's hands gripped Alex's hip- sharp pointed nails breaking skin.  Only then did Alex notice Morgan wasn't really Morgan but something else wearing Morgan like a skin.

Alex had gone out to the edge of the universe once, and though they couldn't really remember what the thing outside the universe looked like, the long black tongue that spilled out of Morgan’s gaping mouth made Alex’s eyes itch like that thing did.

Not Morgan’s other hand came up and gripped the back of Alex’s neck, their sharp nails slicing into their neck too.

Alex tried to pull away but couldn’t.  Not Morgan leaned against them, their mouth coming close to Alex’s ear, the long oily black tongue curling up and across Alex’s throat.

Words spilled out of Not Morgan’s mouth, in dozens, hundreds of voices.

Creep.  Nightmare.  You can be pretty boring sometimes.  How could you? How could you? Monster!  Alex, stop please! It’s them. Obsessive weirdo stalker.  No one will ever love you, you monster.  You’re a horrific person, I’d rather be single.

The stream of every hurtful thing Alex had ever heard continued, and the Not Morgan creature’s hand on Alex’s hip slid low across Alex’s stomach. Slicing open the skin.  The hand slid into Alex’s insides.

Alex tried to pull away again. But the non- Morgan wouldn’t let them go.

“Shhhhhh…” the thing whispered in Morgan’s voice, as it caressed Alex’s lungs. “You love me don’t you Alex?  Just let me have this…”

The tongue had wrapped around Alex’s throat completely and tightened.

“Love you Alex.” Not-Morgan murmured as their hand gripped Alex’s heart, the sharp nails digging into Alex’s beating heart.  “This is mine anyway isn’t it?”

“No.” Alex gasped.  This wasn’t Morgan after all.

“Oh, does it belong to that woman instead now?” Not-Morgan asked.  “Why do you think I’ll let you go?”

“You’ll never be free of me.” Not- Morgan whispered, and yanked on Alex’s heart-

“Alex??”  a shrill voice said, someone shook their shoulders.  “Honey?? Come back to me, love.”

Alex gasped and shook their head.  Their mark and girlfriend, A Rank Hero Rapunzel (Actual name Claire Harris) was leaning over them.

“I’m alright.” Alex lied.

Fucking angst hallucinogens.  They were Fearaven’s specialty and normally Alex was immune, but normally Alex wasn’t limiting themself to just the list of powers the Fairness Association had for them.

The things they did to gruesomely murder a woman at her wedding…

"There's no rush," Rapunzel said. "The Chadster was able to capture Fearaven.  Everyone is just cleaning up now."

Oh good they'd even missed the fucking fight.

They couldn't quite keep the pout off their face at that.  Their fiance giggled, her long braided hair coming up like a third hand to pat Alex's cheek.

Just between the silent observers from outside the universe and Alex, they thought Rapunzel's weird moving hair was pretty creepy.  ( That's right, Alex thought, I know you're watching me .)

"I know that's disappointing for you honey," she said. "But this does mean we have more time to work on the gift registry!"

That would be fun. Hopefully they could at least get a stand mixer out of this wedding.

Two hours later they were on the white couch in Claire's high rise apartment looking at kitchenware on her laptop.

They missed Morgan.

It wasn't even because of the hallucinations really.

There was just something about being in this apartment that made them long to be back in Morgan's apartment.

Claire reached out and brushed her hand against the side of Alex's neck- which made Alex flinch.

Claire frowned and didn't move her hand until Alex scooted away.

"Honey," she said. Alex maybe hated that nickname, but she never used their name.  "You've been acting odd all day. What's wrong?"

"I…" Alex hesitated. "It's just been hard to shake off that vision from earlier."

Claire frowned. "It's upset you that much?"

"I know I need to just get over it but it's taking me a bit is all." Alex said.

She hugged them. "You're secretly a big old softie aren't you?" she said.

Alex didn't reply, and made sure to keep their face neutral.  They did hug her back though.

"Tell me about what happened?" Claire asked. "Maybe it'll make you feel better?"

Oh great now they had to make up a vision…

Alex rubbed their face. "I was home- here, and I was looking for you." They decided to keep the basic framework of the vision and just paint in Claire.

"But when I found you-"

They suddenly realized that 'you were evil and strangled me and tried to scoop my organs out' wouldn't go over well with their girlfriend and her secret identity of being a marriage counselor.

"...I was too late." Alex lied. "I couldn't save you."

"Oh Honey," she said. "That's sweet of you!"

Alex nodded vaguely.  The memory of the real hallucination still clawing at their mind.

God they missed Morgan.
