Work Text:

Ethereal. Beautiful. Enchanting. Lonely

These were the first few words that would come to Seokjin's mind when he looked at the moon. The moon was an ethereal thing, so beautiful and enchanting that Seokjin felt like he could spend eternities staring at it, diving deep into the calm feeling it brought him. Even with all this, the moon had always been lonely in Seokjin's eyes.

Just like him.

All alone high up in the sky, unable to do anything but look down at people and listen to someone's deepest secrets and guard them, or just be a comforting presence to those who were as lonely as it-

"You know, the moon isn't lonely."

Seokjin flinched in surprise as he lifted his head to see a man leaning over him with a sheepish smile. Seokjin sat up as the stranger sat beside him on the grass.

"I'm sorry, what?"

The man shrugged as he put a bag in front of Seokjin with a delicious smell wafting out of it.

"I was just walking by and I saw you. And you just looked so, um, lonely. And the way you were staring at the moon, I knew you were the type who thought the moon was lonely too."

Seokjin stared at the man in surprise, wondering if he'd always worn his emotions on his face or if it was was the man's ability to read people.

"Oh, I bought some food from the store down the corner. It's enough for two if you want to eat with me." offered the man, with a smile.

Seokjin studied him for a few seconds before shrugging as the stranger excitedly removed two containers from the takeout bag and passed one to him.

"Taehyung always says I buy too much food for one person. And well he's not wrong because he's the one who usually ends up eating the leftovers. Anyways, as I was saying before, the moon isn't lonely even if it might look so."

Seokjin took a bite of his food and shook his head, "Why not?"

The man looked up at the moon with a fond smile as if looking at an old friend, "Because it has millions of stars all around it."

Seokjin shook his head yet again, "The stars are too far to be with it. The moon is lonely."

The man hummed, "Okay that can be a fair argument. But just because someone is far doesn't necessarily mean that you have to be lonely. The moon might not be able to move but you can. You can have people around you and be not lonely."

Seokjin let out a soft chuckle, "Maybe I can, maybe I can't. What if I don't have people to be not lonely with?"

"Well, then it's fine too. It's okay if you shine alone. You're still beautiful. The moon might be lonely and full of imperfections but just like it you too can shine through the darkness. You don't need anyone else for that."

Seokjin hummed as he finished his food and put the container aside, "Yeah, I might not need anyone, but what if I want someone?"

The man smiled, dimples poking through his cheeks, "You can have me if you don't find it creepy."

Seokjin let out a laugh, feeling lighter than he had felt in weeks, "I would love to."

The two of them stood up, the stranger collecting their empty containers and throwing them away in a nearby dustbin.

"So, how will I see you again, um-"

"Namjoon."

"-Namjoon?"

The stranger- Namjoon, shrugged, "If the moon wishes it'll bring us together again. Till then, you look at the moon if you ever feel lonely because I'll be looking at it too."

Seokjin nodded with a slightly wistful smile, not really liking how a little time with a complete stranger had him feeling like this, "If the moon wishes."

Namjoon sent Seokjin one last smile as he turned around and left. Seokjin hoped that they would meet again soon because even if the moon was loved by many and touched by only a few, he didn't have to be like that. He could not be lonely.

🌕 🌕 🌕

"You know, your smile might just outshine the moon."

Namjoon grinned as Seokjin sat down beside him, "Guess the moon did wish for us to meet again-"

"Seokjin."

"-Seokjin."

And maybe the moon shined just a little brighter.

And maybe that was the start of Seokjin feeling not so lonely.
