[Song] Les oiseaux que l’hiver exile

Summary:

The Winter redoubles its scourges,
Scouring the field and the street.
The birds, taking all of their music,
To gentler climates retreat.
But still, in their distant asylum,
Their thoughts to us constant remain.
The birds exiled by the Winter
In Spring will return once again.

Work Text:

This is a song about political exile, or birds heading south when the winter comes. Written during the Bourbon restoration. I have podficced the whole story where I found the song, but I thought the song itself deserved an audience, too!

Original French lyrics by Pierre-Jean de Béranger in 1816, translation by Ellen Fremedon, music by Joseph-Denis Doche, singing by Luzula. You can find more information about the song here.
