Chapter 1: The Worst Day of My Life

Chapter Text

The Worst Day of My Life

People are not born equal, and in a world of quirks the quirkless can only do so much. I've had a fascination with quirks for as long as I can remember, though not having one of my own meant I could only analyse the quirks of others from afar. Today I am reminded more than ever of this fact as I sit in class, buried in my notebook while making myself as small as possible.

"You guys are all third-years now. It's time to start thinking seriously about your futures! I would hand out these future career forms but... I assume you all want to be heroes!" The teacher calls from the front of the class as everyone lets off their quirks. I twirl a lone strand of my long curly green hair, wondering how easy it would be to escape the classroom without anyone realising. "Yes, you all have wonderful quirks. But you know that it's against the rules to use them in school!" The teacher tries to calm the energetic children in the class but to no avail.

A yell from the back of the class shuts everyone up. "Sensei! Don't lump me in with these losers!" Kacchan calls out. "As if I had anything like their crappy quirks."

"Get over yourself Bakugo!" One student yells over the chorus of heckles from the other students.

"Shut up! Extras should act like extras!" Kacchan yells back.

"Ah Bakugo, you of course must be aiming for U.A high school."

Kacchan jumps on his desk with a wide proud grin. "I aced the mock exam! I'm the only one here with the stuff for U.A! I'll even surpass All Might and become the best hero out there! Not to mention I'll be the richest person in the world!"

"Oh, you're also going for U.A aren't you Midoriya?" Now I really wanted to disappear. The class all burst out laughing.

"Huh? Midoriya, no way!!" One student called.

"Good grades alone can't get you into the hero program!" Another chortled.

I wasn't sure if I had the strength to fight back, but I went to stand up to try and stand up for myself but got blown back by an explosion from Kacchan. "Forget the crappy quirks, you're totally quirkless. And you think you can rub shoulders with me?!"

"Wa.. wait, no Kacchan." I gulped, backing up against the wall behind me. "I wasn't... saying I could compete with you! Not at all! I mean it. It's just... been my dream. Ever since I was little, and well.. there's no harm in trying..." My voice grew quieter as I spoke.

"Try?! Try what?! The entrance exam?! You're taking the exam just to try?! What can you even do?!" The class loomed over me with laughs and heckles and I knew today was going to be terrible.

After class I went to pack my stuff up, wanting to leave as soon as possible but Kacchan grabbed the book from my hands. "We ain't done here Deku." He growls, putting the book between both his hands and letting off an explosion before throwing the now charred book out the window. "The best heroes out there, well... they showed signs of greatness even as students. I'll be the first and only hero from this crappy public middle school! The first to win the honour of becoming a student at U.A. Guess I'm just a perfectionist." Kacchan moved closer, placing his still smoking hand on my shoulder. "In other words... don't you dare get into U.A nerd!" Kacchan goes to leave the classroom with his two lackeys. "She can't say anything. So lame even as a third year... she still can't face reality. You wanna be a hero so bad? I've got a time-saving idea for you. If you think you'll have a quirk in your next life... go take a swan dive off the roof!"

After they left I went to retrieve my notebook from the fish pond it landed in outside, grumbling to myself. 'Stupid Kacchan, he's aiming to be a hero yet says and does things like this. Idiot.' Walking home I tried to hold my head as high as possible, because ever since I was declared quirkless I decided not to care what anyone else says. I'll keep moving forward and become the best hero I can be! Though the fates that be decided to rip that away from me too, making today the worst day of my life. I turn to hear a noise behind me and get attacked by a villain made of sludge.

"Don't worry girl, I'm just hijacking your body. Calm down. It'll only hurt for about 45 seconds... then it'll be over."

I tried to struggle but I couldn't breath, I gasped for the air that wasn't there. In a panic I wave my arms around trying to hit or grab anything solid and as luck would have it I managed to strike one of his eyes. I managed to crawl away as the villain roared out in pain.

"You damn brat!"

He went to grab me again, but I wouldn't stay still. I kicked out as I kept trying to scurry away, but the villain grabbed my legs and threw me against the wall. I heard the distinct sound of something breaking, my back flared up in pain. As I was sent back into the ground my legs flared up in pain and running away became less of an option.

"I just need a place to hide brat. Now stay still!"

He reaches over and I was struggling to breath again. He'd learnt this time and kept his eyes as far away from me as possible, and just as I thought I was about to die I heard a yell from the other side of the tunnel.

"Fear not kid!! I am here!"

As my vision started to fade I realised I could breath again as a rush of wind went past me, the last thing I heard was a booming voice calling out to me before the darkness took over.
