Chapter Text
The silence that followed left as quick as it came, Amity, King, and Luz's face's of worry quickly swapped for that of confusion. The next word to break the still, was tiny squeak from the confused kitten, "W-What?"
“I mean really, I expected you to come clean during the bath at the latest!” Ed said.
”I told you she’d hold through, Luz was right, she’s very resilient, for the most part,” Em added with a wink.
Amity stared at the two schemers In confusion, but as she finally understood, all the worry and angst was swiftly replaced with the fury that had been building inside her, and was let out in one fell swoop.
”YOU... KNEW.... THE WHOLE TIME!!??!?!” Amity shouted, Rage and anger dripping from her mouth.
"I mean how couldn't we, this is just how you act normally." Em said with a sly smirk.
Amity could feel herself shaking with anger, and without another thought she tried to pounce at Em, with little success.
"You tried to bathe me, made me chase yarn, and fed me cat food! Don't you know how embarrassing that all is?!" Amity shouted, still trying to claw at her siblings.
Avoiding her attacks, Em held her out at arms length, "I don't know Mittens, you ate that cat food yourself, and you seemed to really enraptured with the treats and yarn."
Amity expression soured as they accused her of voluntarily eating cat food and playing with the toys, "I wasn't actually--"
"--And I don't think you minded Luz bathing you one bit, eh?" Ed added.
Amity's face immediately turned red as she redoubled her efforts to try and get at her siblings, "YOU TWO ARE THE WORST!" She shouted, her claws seemingly getting the memo as she flayed her paws wildly.
"Hey, calm down now. Come grab your cat, won't you Luz." Em said, holding out Amity by her scruff.
Luz, who up to this point had been in complete shock, standing next to King, both of their jaws open, suddenly regained herself.
"Uh...u-uh, r-right," She said, awkwardly rushing over and quickly grabbing Amity from Em's grasp.
"This cat's got quite the temper," Ed said nonchalantly.
Amity's stared daggers at them; if she could, she would use her magic to destroy them both.
"You're both lucky I cant use my magic!" Amity shouted bitterly.
"Oh please," Ed said in a mock narcissism, "You would be no match for our magical prowess!"
"Shall we demonstrate?" Em said, summoning a ball of yarn and dangling it in front of Amity, who despite her struggle not to, found herself following it again in a hypnotic trance.
'Awww!' Luz thought to herself, before looking back up at the twins, a thousand questions racing through her mind.
"How did you know?" She asked curiously.
"Oh?" Em said, dissipating the yarn, leaving a blushing Amity as she quickly tried to regain her dignity, "Is it that much mystery?"
"No one else knew but us!" King said.
"That's true, no one did! But fret not, there's a perfectly good explanation," Em said, moving alongside Ed away from the front door.
"So picture this, here we are going to see our little sister to drop off a lunchbox and have a little chat--I mean a sleep over, and with her favorite human--"
"Get on with it!" Amity interrupted angrily.
Em chuckled, "Ha ha, right, so were walking up to the owl house, and who do we see?"
"Hooty?" King and Luz say.
Em and Ed both nod.
”But we didn’t tell hooty?” Luz said.
“Exactly.” Ed replied.
“We walk up, he does his usual “who goes there” spiel. So, we tell him we’re here to see our sister, but get this; apparently she was never there, odd isn’t it? when the day before we get a call from her stating quite the opposite."
Amity let out an frustrated groan as Luz Chuckled nervously, "Oh uh... didn't think of that..."
"Hold that, This is the best part: So we ask him, 'well where's everyone else?' and he says: 'Oh they went to give Mitten's a checkup at the market!' Em says in a high pitch. "'Mittens?' we asked, what's our sister doing getting a checkup? Hooty clarifies: 'No not the blushing one! Mittens! Luz's new cat!'"
Luz could feel Amity's annoyance at the bird tube, and even she winced at the revelation
" 'A cat?' 'Yes!' Luz got her yesterday!' Hooty says. At this point we're pretty confused. So our Mittens isn't here, but apparently there's this cat, that just so happenes to show up the same day our sister is supposed to be having a sleepover with Luz, and it's at this point me and Ed are thinking the same thing; though let it be known sister that we had our doubts, and that this was only a slight suspicion. Was," Em added with a smirk, causing Amity to scowl.
"So we ask about this "Mittens" and He gives us all the details," She presents herself as if shes about to act, " 'Oh Mittens! She's just so adorable! A pretty pink nose, a emerald tail and fluffiest fur you could imagine! I know she loves me! The way she furrows her brow at me in wonder! Just yesterday when she was eating I came to give her company and when she saw me she jumped up in excitement! Before graciously digging into her meal!' " Em finished with a chuckle and smirk, "I didn't know you cared for Hooty so much, ha, and from the sounds of it, this wasn't the first time Luz bathed you."
A Shaking, blushing Amity could only sheepishly avoid eye contact as her siblings chuckled at her, "Ugh, That stupid bird told you about yesterday?!"
"Yea he seemed like he was dying to talk about you, talked for a good little while; anyway, hush now and let me finish: So after he tells us this we ask him if we could just wait inside for your guy's return so we could talk to Luz, to which he was happy to let us in."
"Some guard he is," King said.
"But that's pretty much it," Em said, "You's showed up some 40 minutes later, and just like hooty said, you had a cat. The big thing though, was you said you'd gotten her at the market, and not yesterday. I know poor ol hooty would never speak untruthfully to us, Leaving me and Ed with the conclusion that, gasp, Luz is lying to us!"
Luz's face turned anxious "I-I didn't I-I mean couldn't--"
"I'm kidding Luz!" Em said with a giggle, "I know you were just doing what you had to, but i'm afraid it mattered not, because at that point me and Ed knew that this was no ordinary cat."
"THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU SAY ANYTHING?!?!?!" Amity yelled.
"Well we couldn't be too sure," Ed said with a mischievous grin, "Wouldn't want to make any wild accusations now. So we just had to make sure of it."
"Exactly," Em said.
"YOU. TWO. ARE. THE. WORST!" Amity growled.
"We love you too sister," Ed said.
Em looked back to Luz, "And you saw the rest; you ran off to the kitchen, we followed and proceeded to pamper our sister."
Luz looked nervously between Amity and her siblings, unsure how to respond. She resorted to looking down at Amity, "W-Well I guess you didn't have to put your all in huh, Amity." Luz tittered.
"What?" Amity said, looking up.
"you know, the yarn, the laser pointer thing, i mean you had me convinced you really liked those, that's for sure!"
"Wait what?! i didn't do that voluntarily!" Amity said.
"Uh... you didn't?"
"No!"
"Oh!" Luz said, "that must be a side effect of the potion! That would explain the effect of the catnip and cat toys. You really did inheret not just the physical features, but mental ones as well! I knew it!." Luz said, pumping her fist.
"Potion?" Ed and Em said.
Luz slapped her free hand over her own mouth, "Uh...I mean..."
"So it was a potion that did this!" Em chimed, "What happened, Were you attacked?"
"Was it someone dastardly villan?" Ed joined.
"Uh... not quite... it...it was my potion," Luz said.
"Oh, wow. Gee, Luz, I never knew you had such pranksters mindset," Em said.
"W-What?! No no no it wasn't me! I didn't turn her her into a cat! A-Amity was just helping me out when uh... I mean--"
"Oh I See, Mitten's has always been a little clumsy, I mean, if she can fall into a cauldron, I don't doubt she messed up the potion, eh Mittens?" Ed said with a smirk.
A blushing, Amity stared angrily at her siblings, not wanting to reveal her carelessness was the cause of her conundrum, lest she receive more teasing, "I-I didn't mess up any ingredients! It was just... a small mistake is all--"
"Oh we understand, after all, potions isn't really your forte," Em said.
"I didn't mess up the potion!" Amity shouted.
"Then what happened?" Em said, "What, were you the test subject?"
"I-I... uh... well you see..." Amity said, "It was... I might of..."
"I Gave her the wrong ingredient," Luz said.
All three Blight siblings looked up to Luz.
"You gave her the wrong ingredient?" Ed said.
"Uh yea," Luz said as if it was the most obvious thing, "We were making it and I think I handed her the uh... cursed... gnarl root... instead of... the wringed abomination slime ... yea... I must have read Eda's instructions poorly, ha ha, and here we are..."
Luz looked at Amity and gave a nervous smile and wink, Amity stared back, completely enamored.
"But you said that--"
"It was actually a gryphon feather! You're right King, I almost forgot, haha..." Luz said, turning to king and motioning him to zip it, to which he quickly understood. Luz turned back to the Blight twins, them seeming none the wiser.
"Oh, well I bet Mittens was super mad about that one huh," Em said.
"Uh... I sure was, ha ha..." Amity chuckled nervously.
"Yea well, we managed to come to an understanding," Luz said, "I would keep an eye on her and come Monday, I would have a brand new potion that will change her back!"
"Wait, you don't have a cure potion?" Ed said.
"Uh, I accidentally dropped it," Luz said.
"And you wont have one till Monday?" Em said.
"Yea, but I should be able to get it first thing in the morning, meaning Amity wont miss any of her classes!
Luz looked cheerily between the twins, but her expression dampened when she saw their faces, "W-Whats wrong?"
"You know what this means Em," Ed said.
"I do Ed," Em said with a sad expression.
"Luz, she was turned into a cat yesterday, right?" Ed said.
"Uh, yea? W-Why?"
"Oh no. Luz, if the effects of the potion aren't reverted within a day, it'll be permanent."
"WHAT?!" Luz and Amity shouted in unison
"She may have a couple hours at most."
"No no no, you're lying! I-I cant stay like this! What will everyone think of me... I-I'll be a joke..." Amity said, her stomach feeling as if it had dropped ten stories.
"No no that can't be, they wouldn't let me make this potion if it was this dangerous," Luz said.
"Well they did provide a cure," Ed said.
"I can't be stuck like this! My magic, school, my parent's, eating that awful cat food! Who'll love me like this!? We need that cure, NOW! M-Maybe we can just go to the school and--"
Amity's monologue was interrupted by the sounds of muffled giggling.
She turned to see her siblings both stifling a giggle, "W-Why are you laughing!? This isn't funny!"
"You're right, it wouldn't be if it was true," Em said.
"W-What? Y-you mean--"
"It isn't true," Ed said, "we're just messing with you, Mitten's," Ed snickered.
"W-What!? Messing?! wh--you-- Arrgh when I get back to normal you two are dead!" Amity shouted.
"Hey just keeping you on your toes--er, paws," Em snickered.
Luz sighed a breath of relife, just eased that Amity was still safe.
"Anyway, say, why didn't you just, come home right away the day the transformation happened?" Em said, as if nothing untoward just happened.
"What, and let mom see me like this?" Amity grumbled.
“Okay, fair enough,” Em said, “So that’s why you wanted to sleep over a “friends” house?”
”Is that what you told her?” Amity said.
”Kinda, seeing as she probably wouldn't like the fact you're staying over a convicts house, we told her you had to do a work for school, and it would require you to be at a friends house for the weekend—what’s their names—Boscha? Skaya? Whatever, we mentioned one of them, saying you had to study in a group project, she seemed convinced, for the most part.”
Amity breathed a sigh of relief from the only good news from her siblings so far, “So why are you here now?”
”We already told you, you weren’t keeping contact with mom,” Ed said.
”I usually don’t need—“
”Yea well, this is different, you didn't tell her you were staying over someones house yourself so--"
"For obvious reasons!" Amity shouted.
"Yea yea, we know, but mom is still rather concerned on not hearing from you," Em said, "She said she tried contacting you through your--" She gestured to Amity's neck, "you know."
Amity's eyes widened as she remembered her necklace, "O-Oh right, well When I turned into a cat, it kinda-- I don't know-- absorbed into me? I guess?"
"What did? " Luz asked.
"Oh don't worry," Ed said, ignoring Luz's question and turning her gaze back to Amity, "Well the fact you didn't respond kinda set off a red flag for her, she said she was going to call the parents of one of your friends."
"But you stopped her?" Amity said.
"Of course we did!" Ed said, "Being the amazing siblings we are, we offered to go check in on you ourselves."
"i thought You said you coming here was a punishment?" Luz said.
"Sorry, we needed a excuse to stay as long as we wanted. If we said we were just checking in because our mom was getting suspicious, it would have been a lot harder to justify our stay," Em said with a wink, eliciting a groan from Amity.
"Oh come on now Mittens, we took time out of our day to keep this little secret afloat, and that's before we knew you got all furry. You might as well pay us to keep our mouths shut, but a thank you will suffice for now," Ed said.
They were right, if it weren't for them, her mother would have had an entire search party looking for her by now; so with a deep sigh, Amity obliged, "Thank you."
"Oh you're so very welcome sister," Em said.
"You know I bet moms just scared of you getting a rebellious spirit! We'll tell her that you were so hard at work that you didn't have the time to respond, you were... testing a sample or something that required you to take off the necklace and you misplaced it, but you swear to have it back by Monday. Boom, full-proof story," Ed said.
Luz laughed a little, "Wow, your guy's mom sounds pretty uptight, haha. At least you know she cares about you's!"
Amity shifted and the twins exchanged glances.
"Sure," Em said, followed by an awkward silence, "Anyhow, I think that's everything you need to know, we can probably take our leave now, Ed."
"Wait, you're leaving already?" Amity said.
"Aw, I know you love hanging with us," Em said with a wink, "but we did say we would leave when we talked to you, and well... we talked. Plus these scratches do actually hurt. You really gotta cut her nails," Em said jokingly to Luz.
"Wait!" Luz moved closer to them, "Is there nothing you can do help her? I mean, maybe you can get some snails from your mom and we can buy the ingredients for the potion?"
The twins exchanged looks before bursting out laughing," Luz, I'm not to shabby in potion making myself, but getting money from our mother? Ha! Good one!" Ed said.
"Oh, well I just thought--"
"No no it's not your fault, Luz. Me and Em are just Impoverished right now, allowance is next week you see."
"Well I'm sure if you ask nicely she'll--"
The twins shook their heads, "Sorry Luz, you'll just have to wait this one out till Monday, but that's not really bad eh? You get to bond and hang out with our adorable little sister! Now cute little kitty! for her second sleepover!" Em said, booping Amity's noise.
"H-Hey! Shut up! I'm not cute!" Amity growled, baring her fangs.
“If the scary widdle kitty says so!” Em laughed, "You gotta tell me how the first night went one of these days!"
"Not happening!" Amity shouted.
Luz kept her grip tight to the scowling Amity, “Well if there's really nothing else you can do, I wont hold you two any longer."
She looked between the two siblings as they nodded and both turned to leave. Suddenly Luz remembered something.
"Wait! Hold on! Uh...So, you two… aren’t going to tell anyone about this, right? We’d like to kinda, keep this under wraps, you know? Don’t want everyone looking at Amity differently, haha…” Luz tittered.
The twins exchange looks as they turned to face their sister, “Oh yea, almost forgot, but of course,” Em said, “I mean, we wouldn’t want to ruin our sister’s reputation now, would we?”
“Of course not!” Ed said, “Like we would ever dream of embarrassing poor ol’ Mittens.”
”Hey, c-come on you guys, you learnt your lesson after the whole diary incident, right!?” Luz said.
The twins laughed, “Of course we have! We’ve done everything in our power to atone for our mistakes!” Ed said playfully.
“Hardly,” Amity mumbled.
”Yes, it’s been hard for her to accept our apology, but we know deep down, she forgives us,” Em said.
Amity only scoffed in response.
”So, you will keep this a secret?” Luz asked.
“But of course, anything to restore her good faith in us!” Ed said.
“Oh thank goodness, that’s a relief,” Luz said.
”Butttttt….” Em said.
”WHAT DO YOU MEAN BUT!?” Amity shouted.
Ed and Em laughed, “Well… it’s just that… with a secret of this…high stakes… the pressures alot, and I think we need something in return for holding our tongues, plus, those scratches really did hurt,” Em said snarkily.
”W-What!? What happened to all that ‘restoring good faith’ and '...a thank you will suffice' just a second ago!?” Amity said.
”Relax Mittens, it’s nothing huge! Just think of it like a… I.O.U! In fact we don’t even know what we want yet, but we’ll think of something come Monday! Nothing publicly embarrassing! You have out word!”
”Wait, You’re serious?” Luz said.
”When are we not?” Ed said lazily.
”So what do you say, Mittens?” Em said, “We keep your secret, and in return you do something we tell you! Whatever that may be, we’ll figure it out.”
A growling, shaking Amity could only stare angrily at her mischievous siblings, desperate for them to leave.
”Argh, fine! You two are the worst!” She said.
“Bingo! You heard it here! Ay Luz? King? We’re so happy you’ve agreed! Your secrets safe with us; and give us a little slack, we’re the ones keeping mom and dad at bay, don’t act like that’s an easy feat!” Em said.
”Whatever! Just go!” Amity said.
Ed and Em chuckled, “If it’s what Mittens wants, than she shall receive!”
They turned around and walked to the doorknob, Ed turned his head.
”Oh, and I left Mitten’s lunchbox on the table,” Ed said, “I would have brought one of her plushies and bedtime stories, but silly little me forgot,” Ed said, smirking at Amity.
”Ugh, leave!” Amity shouted.
Ed went to go for the handle, when Em suddenly turned as well, “oop almost forgot, here.”
she presented the catnip she had pocketed earlier, “Since we’re no longer adopting this kitten, I think it’ll be more use to you.”
”Stop treating me like a cat!” Amity said, blushing at her siblings dialogue.
”Thanks but uh, I don’t think I’ll be needing it.” Luz said.
”Come on now, I wouldn’t want to steal your calming spell. Trust us, when the kitty gets cranky, she can be a handful,” Em said, smirking.
”I'm right here!” Amity said, “Quit talking about me like I’m raging infant!”
”Oh they grow up so fast,” She said, taking a pinch of the catnip out of the bag.
”R-Really Em, I don’t think—“ Luz stuttered.
”I insist, and while I don’t she’ll admit it, I’m pretty sure she loves the stuff, you saw how cute she acted while under its influence,” Em said, sprinkling the flakes just above Amity.
”I AM NOT—NOT—No—A-ACHOO!” Amity said, sneezing ever so embarrassingly.
”Aw, she even sneezes like a kitten!” Ed cooed.
Amity growled at her siblings, fire burning in her eyes, “LEAVE!”
”Guess that’s our cue, here,” Em said, putting the catnip in Luz’s pocket, “You can use as a substitute for her lack of plushie and story, sure to knock her right right!”
”GO!” Amity yelled.
”Okay, okay, we get it, you need your Luz time we’ll go,” Em said as Ed finally opened the door.
”Later you three, we’ll keep in contact about our price later,” Ed said.
”Enjoy the rest of the sleepover Mittens! Don’t forget to look in your lunchbox!”
The twins both walked outside, as Hooty barraged them with questions.
”DID YOU MEET MITTENS!? ISNT SHE CUTE! SAY WHO WAS THAT YELLING JUST NOW—“
Luz shut the door quickly, before turnning to her two furballs.
”Well that was an experience,” Luz said.
Amity sighed with a mix of respite and newfound worry.
"Are they always like that?" King asked to no in particular.
Luz looked down to Amity, "Hey, what's the matter? Everything's going to be okay! You're Mom and Dad still don't know anything, and I'm sure whatever Ed and Em ask you to do won't be too bad."
"It's not that... it's just... so many people know about my current state, I mean: You, Eda, King, Ed and Em, And even Boscha's suspicious... I just really don't want this getting any more out of hand. Especially with Willow and Gus coming over anytime now... I'm just worried about this spiraling to far out of my control."
"Hey, hey," Luz said in a comforting tone, "You don't have to worry! Everyone you just named is trying to help! Well besides Boscha... But aside from her, we're all here for you! Even if that help comes from some mischievous siblings, a sassy old witch, The king of demons! and... a human. we're all here for you.
"Yea! What Luz said," King piped.
Amity looked up into Luz's eyes with aw, her words putting things back into perspective, she smiled slightly, feeling her blush growing.
"Now, what do we say to things like this!" Luz said.
"W-What?" Amity said.
"Come on, you remember, 'We can fix this together!' " Luz said.
Amity smiled and blushed, "We can fix this together."
"And fix this we shall!" Luz said.
"Oh I want to join the cheer!" King said, Rushing to Luz's side.
Luz chuckled as King raced beside her.
"Ok, One more time, all together!" Luz said, kneeling down, "One, two, three!"
"We can fix this together!"
"Awesome!" Luz said, standing up and looking back at Amity, "See? And I'll be with you the whole way! That make you feel any better?"
Amity blushed as she giggled softly and her lip quivered in excitement, "Haha... Y-Yea, Thank you, Luz."
"No problem! Now, why dont we get ready for Gus and Willow, we'll plan it out to make sure we make their visit as short as possible, minimizing their time with you, therefore eliminating the chance of them finding out you secret identity, sound good?"
"Y-Yea! That sound's like a good plan," Amity said, still hopelessly enamored.
"Then let's get to work! And from here on out, no one else will know your secret!" Luz said, feeling a light fur brush against her.
"WOW, I DIDN'T KNOW MITTENS COULD TALK, SHE SOUNDS SO MUCH LIKE AMITY!" Hooty said, his long form emiting from a nearby open window.
