Work Text:
"The beautiful Shield Knight falls to her knees in anguish as she gazes upon the horrifying sight in front of her. Drill Knight's armor is splattered in blood as he forces his drill through Shovel Knight's breastplate and into his heart. Cackling menacingly, he raises up Shovel Knight's twitching corpse and displays it proudly as a trophy. The Blue Burrower has met his gruesome demise, and Shied Knight knows that she only has seconds before her perfect body is punctured in the same way.
Drill Knight, already grown bored of his kill, reverses his drill to dump Shovel Knight's bloody corpse to the floor. Menacingly he approaches Shield Knight, who normally would rise to the occasion with a gleam in her hazel eyes and shields ready but seeing the death of her adventuring partner has rendered her helpless with grief. Drill Knight is about to forcefully remove her organs when a perfectly aimed throwing trowel ricochets around the cave and strikes Drill Knight in a weak spot in his armor. He turns around enraged to see whom has disturbed his bloodlust.
There, at the far end of the tunnel stands the heroic Fanboy, his lantern emitting a radiant and holy light. The light soothes Shield Knight, who has only good in her heart, but is blinding to the wicked Drill Knight. Enraged, Drill Knight flies at Fanboy, who easily ducks out of the way. He makes a flurry of lightning-fast blows, all which are easily dodged. Drill Knight pants, out of breath.
'How are you dodging all of my attacks?'
Fanboy grins. 'It's simple, really. I've been studying you and your goons for some time, so I have perfectly memorized every move you can make. It's only a matter of my highly tuned reflexes kicking in and carrying me to safety.'
Drill Knight stops, knowing he's been beaten by a superior foe. Fanboy takes out his lightning blade (which readers will remember being gifted him by the Phantom Striker in Part I) and strikes a true blow, killing Drill Knight instantly and humanely. All that's left is to return to the surface with the beautiful Shield Knight.
Shield Knight rushes to Fanboy and throws her arms around him. 'Oh Fanboy, you save me! I only wish you had come sooner, so that you may have saved Shovel Knight as well.'
Fanboy nods and replies with wisdom beyond his years. 'Of course, but it does no good to mourn the death of our heroes. Instead we must live on, thereby honoring the memory of what they stood for.'
Shield Knight looks up at Fanboy's strong yet caring face as she recognizes the wisdom in his words, and her heart begins to beat faster. She would need a new adventuring partner now that Shovel Knight is dead- and maybe something more. But would such a strong and heroic figure be willing to let her go with him? There was only one way to find out. Gathering her courage, she closes her eyes and sticks out her ruby lips, drawing closer to Fanboy's face until-"
"Ah, what a fine night to be seated at a campfire, wouldn't you agree?"
Fanboy snaps his book shut and looks across at the voice speaking to him. It's coming from a stout knight in blue plate mail, a shovel sharpened to be as deadly as a sword lying at the log he sits upon. There's only one person it could be...
"Wow, are you really Shield Knight's adventuring pal, Shovel Knight? I'm a huge fan of hers! Uhh, and yours, too!"
"That I am! Always pleased when my reputation precedes me." Shovel Knight's genuine grin can be inferred from behind his helmet. How Fanboy hated him. "Say, did I interrupt your calculations? While I won't forgive Drill Knight for stealing my bag, I must admit it's wonderful how many different people have been brought together by this hole. Adventurers, merchants, and of course mathematicians such as yourself, socializing around the fire."
"It's not calculations, it's-" Fanboy is glad the light of the fire hides his blush. "I'm writing a story. Er, of the adventurers delving into the pit to bring Drill Knight to justice."
"Oh, a storyteller? A more noble occupation than most give credit, it's truly the storytellers that keep the heroes of yesterday alive and inspire the heroes of tomorrow." Standing up, Shovel Knight pats Fanboy on the back. "Keep up the good work friend. At the moment I'm off to see Whisker about being sent back down to the Secret Fountain, but once this whole ordeal is over I'd love to hear you retell it."
Fanboy stares blankly into the fire as Shovel Knight leaves the circle. Of course the travelling companion of the legendary Shield Knight would have to match her bounteous kindness. How could he compete with that? Opening his notebook he grabs at the page and is briefly gripped by an impulse to tear it out and throw it into the fire.
Fanboy stops himself. If Shovel Knight is here, then the rumors of Shield Knight being in the area must be true as well. If he could just meet with her once- perhaps even get close enough to catch her scent, which has never yet been put to pen. He would be a legend among his peers! Truly, the whole trip will be worth it, as soon as he can find her. Fanboy fixes his gaze upon the pit that has lured so many travelers. Perhaps waiting up at the surface won't suffice to meet his idol. Fanboy closes his eyes and steels himself to delve into the dark caverns that lay beyond his imagination...
