The queen is just a piece for the player to move

Summary:

The archon war was just a game where the best pawns were chosen, even if it was disguised as a war for heavenly power.

Some beings, didn’t do it for the power.

Work Text:

The sustainer did not care for mortals, her job was keeping them in line, nothing more.
She also made sure those so called gods didn’t meddle in Celestia’s business.

For that very same reason, she ordered her assistants to inform her of every single thing that happened in the mortal plane.

Curiously, she hadn’t been contacted in a few months, which was quite strange, she remembered requesting weekly reports.
They were definitely going to receive “disciplinary action” as soon as she saw them.

And, what a coincidence! One of her very own assistants just entered the room!
Oh, she definitely was going to get blood on her hands.

She opened her mouth to demand an explanation when suddenly her assistant’s voice resounded in the room.

“Decarabian, the god of storms has been slain…”

Her mouth snapped shut.

Normally, the sustainer showed no emotion, but this time, she couldn’t help the widening of her eyes.
She hadn’t imagined Decarabian dying any time soon, but, she should have expected it.

The god of storms was powerful in raw power, as powerful as he could be of course.
But his followers weren’t too keen on the idea of worshiping him, they disliked him quite a lot.

Not that it mattered, they were nothing but pesky mortals that got in the way.
But still, Decarabian did not have any subject willing to fight for him, so another god could have easily killed him.

She at least hoped the reason for his death would amuse her.

 ”how was he slaughtered?”
She eyed her assistant, subtly glaring at her.
She should have already been told his cause of death without needing to ask, but it seemed that was too much to ask.

The younger god must have noticed her anger as they shrieked in her gaze.

The mortals revolted, my lady.”

Technically, it was an answer, just not a complete one.
Either way, it was not what she asked for, she had not need for such answer.
Thought that probably meant Decarabian was distracted by the mortals and a foreign god decided to take the chance.

Yet, confirmation wouldn’t hurt.

Must i remind you what i asked?”

The assistant’s fear was quite clear, yet the sustainer stared at them, there was no way out of this one, she had made sure of that.

There is no need, Ma’am”

There was silence for a moment when suddenly, she had a burst of anger, she yelled at the assistant who seemed on the verge of tears.

“Then why haven’t you said who slaughtered Decarabian yet?!”

“M- my lady it was…” they stopped, clearly hesitant to find put what would happen after they told her, but, it did not truly matter as they had already messed up.

The mortals killed the god.”

How dare they.

How dare they overstep their punny mortal authority.

“Thank you, your services are not needed anymore”.
Her assistant should be grateful, they received a mercy by being turned into a mortal, into a pest.

She wondered weather the mortals actually killed that fool, it seemed imposible, it should have been, but there were always some exceptions…

Well… She could always go look. That surely would confirm it.

She stared at the flying island, only for a moment then sighted, she knew this place could run without her, so, a decision was made.

A blinding light suddenly appeared and it was gone as soon as it came.

She appeared right on the city of mondstadt, its wind barriers were still standing tall, even after the death of its creator.

how curious.

It seemed the people still lived there, even after the death of their captor.
Well, it was time to make them pay.

She approached the nearest mortal, one dressed in peasants clothes and his hair tied into to braids.
She called out to the mortal, voice full of power and might.

The so called mortal quickly turned around and she found herself staring into eyes with far too many hues of blue.

There was no way, it was impossible.

She had definitely seen those eyes before.

A manic laughter, went through their throat, coming right from the depths of their soul.

She hadn’t expected for this to be the way she met her nephew.

No, not at all.

She stared at her sister’s son with amusement.

So this was who killed Decarabian?

It was quite a pity, she surely couldn’t kill him now, she definitely didn’t want her traitorous sister rampaging through all of teyvat.

The son of Istaroth stared at her, seemingly recognizing her even of they had never met before.

There was an ounce of hatred in his eyes, but she knew the hatred was not his but his mother’s.

Perhaps it was Barbatos that spoke, it could have possibly been Istaroth, yet, she would not know as a thousand voices spoke at the dame time.

 hello, lady asmoday”

The voice sounded uncannily human, yet at the same time, it did not.

It sounded far too similar to hers.

Now, now, my nephew, there is no need for such formalities, is there?”

Her sister was definitely watching this, and the opportunity to get a rise of her was far too good to miss.

You truly can’t expect me to ignore your tittles, oh mighty sustainer of the heavens.”

The brat replied with no hesitation, knowing he would not be killed.

There was a mocking tone on his voice, yet it seemed that it was not him that felt like that.
there was no need to dignify that with an answer, so she did what was meant to happen and handed him a blue chess piece.

you wish for me to become a puppet

He waited for a moment until he spoke again.

”why not Boreas? He is certainly more powerful than me.”

They were both aware this was not true, but neither of them dared utter such things. Something had to be said, so she said what sounded logical.

“The fool declined our offer, but, i know you will not

She awaited for an answer, it was clear the god was contemplating it.

Suddenly, they both heard a voice as old as hers, yet she couldn’t quite hear it, it was a quiet mutter, something only meant for the ears of Barbatos.

His eyes widened, seemingly realizing something important.

She wasn’t sure if that was good or bad for her so she pushed him a little bit in the right direction.

“If i were you, i would take it, you don’t want to risk another tyrant being the rules of this city, right?”

That certainly got his attention, he reached for the gnosis on her hand but hesitated, he stared for what seemed to be a second then he took it.

Istaroth was surely laughing at her, but, at least she got a new archon.
