Isabela's Crazy Bad Hair Day

Summary:

A wider mischievous grin stretched its way across Camilo's face as he showed her several small bottles that Mirabel instantly recognized as her oldest sister's hair dye. For a brief moment there, Mirabel pulled a face.

She smirked, after a moment of silence. "I'm in," she said. "What're we even going to do with that?"

Camilo moved towards and pulled open Isabela's door. He turned back to Mirabel and let out a soft chuckle. "You'll see."

Or: Mirabel and Camilo decide to prank Isabela by switching out her hair dye with paint.

Written for Encantober day five: Pranks

Work Text:

"Psst. Mira. Psst. Psst!"

"Camil—"

"Sshhh!" her older cousin responded, hiding his giggling as a mischievous grin crossed his face. "Over here, prima!"

Mirabel looked around for a little bit before she looked upwards and caught sight of her older cousin motioning frantically for her to join him on the balcony near the corner where Isabela's room stood.

"I need help," he continued, as she hurried up the stairs to join him.

"Are you hurt? Do I need to get my mother?"

"No, I, uh...." A wider mischievous grin stretched its way across Camilo's face as he showed her several small bottles that Mirabel instantly recognized as her oldest sister's hair dye.

Moving the bottles he'd gathered to one hand, Camilo grabbed a hold of Mirabel's hand and pulled her into Isabela's room. Mirabel turned to close the door behind her. Isabela was still asleep and unaware of her youngest sister and younger primo. Camilo quickly pulled Mirabel behind one of Isabela's potted cacti, both of them peeking their heads out from behind it and watching Isabela. They had to be super quick about it, they knew for a fact, before the oldest Madrigal grandchild woke up.

Camilo chuckled softly as he crept out from behind the potted cactus, Mirabel following close behind him. The older of the two fifteen year olds stopped by Isabela's vanity, placing each of the bottles of hair dye down onto it and eyeing some bottles of paint. Mirabel came to a stop beside Camilo. Also looking down at the paint.

"What does she need that for?" Mirabel whispered, looking up at Camilo.

"You'll see." Camilo picked up one of the bottles of paint, uncapping one of the bottles of hair dye and pouring it out before pouring the paint into the now empty bottle.

Mirabel chuckled softly as Camilo handed it off to her and began to do the same thing with the other bottles of hair dye.

"Pour this all over her hair and we'll do the same thing with all the other bottles," he quietly whispered to her.

Mirabel said nothing as she nodded in response and quietly stepped towards her oldest sister, uncapping the bottle that she had been handed and sitting on the edge of Isabela's bed. Remaining quiet and focused, Mirabel tipped the bottle over and watched as it poured over Isabela's hair; purple in shade. Isabela didn't stir.

Camilo stepped over towards Mirabel, handing her another bottle; this one red. "Here."

Mirabel nodded, again not saying anything as she uncapped the bottle and, much like the last time, poured it all over Isabela's hair. This time, Isabela seemed to wake up at Camilo and Mirabel's chuckles, glancing towards them.

"What?" she mumbled, still tired.

Mirabel and Camilo continued to giggle. "Mírate en el espejo," the family pranksters said in unison.

Isabela sighed quietly as she clambered out of bed, not noticing the paint dripping from her hair as she stepped towards her mirror and glanced at her reflection. A few brief seconds of silence passed before a smile crossed Isabela's face. That was not the reaction that Mirabel and Camilo had been expecting. Their chuckling ceased to be as Isabela turned her head to look at them.

"You know, you guys, I actually kind of like this."

Mirabel and Camilo glanced at one another, the both of them mouthing out "What?" as they turned back to Isabela. Stunned and surprised looks crossed both their faces.

"Red and purple suit me," she continued on, still unaware of the paint that had dripped onto the floor behind her. A few moments of deafening silence passed, neither Mirabel or Camilo saying anything. Isabela glanced between them. Immediately noticing the matching looks on her youngest sister and younger cousin's faces. She chuckled softly, asking them, "This was a prank, wasn't it?"

Again, Mirabel and Camilo glanced at one another.

"Nope," Mirabel was quick to say.

"Definitely not," Camilo added.

A loud giggle sounded from the door. Isabela, Mirabel and Camilo quietly turned their heads towards the source of it to find Dolores peeking her head into Isabela's room and looking at the three of them. "Come on, you guys. It's time for breakfast." She turned and focused her attention solely to Isabela now. "I like the new hair color, Isa."

"Gracias, prima," her older cousin responded in amusement as she, Mirabel and Camilo moved to exit her room. She laughed as she added, "It was Mirabel and Camilo's work."
