fallen down

Chapter 1: "Oh! You've fallen down, haven't you..."

Chapter Text

You closed your eyes as you climbed up the path. A large forest surrounded you, deciduous trees and evergreens marking the path. Your feet ached, and you felt like you were going to vomit at any moment, but you were determined. Determined to make it up this mountain. Mt. Ebott. The mountain nobody is said to return from.

Except... you don't think anyone's climbed up here before. Maybe it's just a legend, and you can make a living here. You have your crackers and cheese, and your water. Maybe you can find some plants you can eat..? Build a cottage out of wood, find some wild cows or something. Are cows wild? You didn't know. Your head hurt too much to think straight.

You here shouts in the distance. Down at your village. Looks like your mother found out you're gone.

"My baby! My child, Kara, is gone!" you frowned. She had convinced everyone that she was your perfect, innocent mother. You picked up the pace. The exclamation would send people up the mountain looking for you, and you did not want that. You broke into a run and tried your best to get up the mountain. Your leg just hurt so bad and your stomach was in knots and your face was wet and you felt your head hurting and-

Suddenly you were inside a huge cave. You had been running for a long while. Your lungs burned, your feet hurt even more now. Your head was practically spinning. You found yourself looking at the pillars. It seems... there were symbols etched into them...

Wait! There was writing you could understand below it. It read,

Long ago, two races ruled over the Earth. Humans, and monsters. Monsters were cruel creatures that could take human souls, so the humans and the monsters went to war. The humans won, and the horrible creatures were sealed under the earth and ground. Please turn back, monsters will take you down into their cavern, and you will never be seen again!

You smiled. Maybe your soul could be put to good use with the monsters. You went to find the next plaque when your foot was caught in something. You looked down as a spike of terror flash through you. Your foot was caught in a vine, and you were falling forward. The hole in front of you was dark, and you couldn't see the bottom. Oh.. wasn't this what you wanted? Why were you scared? Why were you crying? Why are you screaming for someone to help. Why... Why does it hurt...

You felt very peaceful for a moment. Despite the screaming, crying, sobbing, and everything, you were weightless. Flying, even. You were an angel, flying across the heavens. You were-

You were on the ground.

Your ribs hurt so bad, and so did your head. Your vision was so blurry. You closed your eyes, squeezing them shut to try and ease the pain. It didn't help. You felt yourself screaming again. Not from the sound, but from the pain in your throat. Actually, it was hard to hear anything. Blood spread through your mouth, and you let out a real sob. You were just so... so tired. Tired of everything...

You felt yourself slip away, but something in you fought it. You felt your fists clench and you screamed out again for someone, anyone to help you. You shut your eyes and hoped.

Asriel looked up impatiently into his mother's eyes. She was concerned with the two skeleton monsters that were currently using telekinesis to lift furniture out of the house and away to more monsters who would transport into their new home. Asriel yawned. This was so boring..

"Mommy? Can I go play?" Asriel asked, tugging on his mother's robe.

"Yes, my son. Please, just don't go far." she smiled down at him, and patted him on the head softly. Asriel smiled back, and turned to run off into the depths of Home. "Oh! And Asriel, my son, please don't touch any of the old puzzles! You might get hurt..." she sighed as he continued running off. Asgore gave her a half hug.

"He will be okay. He knows how to get through the puzzles. He's not a little kid anymore," he told Toriel, glancing back at the hallway Asriel had disappeared into.

"I know, I know... I just worry about him. He's our future, after all," she sighed, continuing to command the movers.

Asriel looked around at the purple hallways around him. He recalled an ancient history lesson about how the rock was naturally purple, and the monsters mined it to make homes. He had zoned out after that. History was so boring... A small whimsun flittered by, and Asriel smiled at it softly.

"Hello little one, what's wrong?" the creature was crying, and it turned to him. It's little antennae twitched.

"Oh, Prince Asriel, something fell down from the sky! It fell from the clouds! It made this... horrible noise and then it started crying. Please, Prince, please get rid of it!" then the creature sobbed and flew away. Asriel's tail twitched. What was the creature that fell from the sky?

He ran through his former home, soft paws padding against the purple floor. Suddenly he heard this... noise. A child like him, but broken up and slightly... wet sounding. A sort of gurgling.

Something didn't feel right.

He ran faster, trying to find the creature, and eventually he slowed down. The groans were louder now, and it sounded more pained the longer he waited. He let out a small call.

"Hello?" when there was no response, he came a few steps closer to the room and spoke again, "i-it sounds like it came from over here..."

There was a shuffle, sounding like the creature was moving.

He rounded a corner, and hid behind a marble pillar. He slowly peeked out, and saw a crumpled up thing on the ground. It was crying. It had a halo of auburn hair, and a gold and dark brown sweater. There was a weird red liquid coming out of its mouth and body. He looked up, and saw a light from above. It was a hole.

"Oh! You've fallen down, haven't you..." he touched the creature's head. It let out another groaning noise.

"Here... get up..." he reached out with a paw and allowed the creature to grab hold of him. It slowly got to its feet, whimpering. Slowly, he put the creature's arm around his neck, and let it lean against them. Then carefully led it out of the room. It looked so hurt...

Every ounce of your being was in pain. You cried out one last time, and suddenly you felt vibrations in the ground. Something was coming. Distantly, you heard the sound of a voice...

"I-it sounds like it came from over here..." it sounded like a little boy's voice. Maybe around your age. Were there humans around here? Actual people? You had thought that monsters were the ones sealed under. Maybe the monsters were humans, but just pushed away by the others. Either way, it sounded like help was coming.

"Oh! You've fallen down, haven't you..." the boy came closer now, and while it was too blurry to see him, you could tell he had... white... hair? Maybe it was long, and that was why he appeared to be covered in it. He bent down and touched your head lightly. You tried to say something, but it came out as a weird, drawn out noise. He let out a small whimper.

"Here... get up..." he reached for your hand. You took it, and were surprised to feel that it was covered in some kind of.. white. Like his face. Was this a monster? Were you being taken to be eaten? You didn't care, maybe you could help them. You were lifted up by the child, and you slowly got to your feet. You could make out his face a little more now. He was a monster, clearly, with white fur all over his body. He had a small wisp of hair on the top of his head, that was also that creamy white, and his eyes were wide and blue. He had a small snout, with a rabbit-like nose. His mouth also had fangs, similar to the stories with 'vampires' you had read. His ears were long, and resembled a goat. What kind of weird mish-mash of creatures was this child..?

"I'm... Kara," you managed to mumble out. Your mouth tasted bloody again.

"Chara, huh? That's a nice name..." based on how he pronounced your name, it seems like he didn't hear 'Kara.' But... maybe its better that way. Maybe you could be someone else...

"My name is Asriel," he said, smiling at you. You nodded slowly, closing your eyes. "Chara! Don't close your eyes..." Asriel looked at you worriedly. You tried to keep your eyes open, but... it was just so hard... you were just so tired...

The purple walls and floors of the monster world blurred together, and you felt yourself go limp. Asriel cried out as you fell to the ground. Your head banged against the floor, and you couldn't remember anything else.
