With all the noisy clatter below, Tom and Sabine had no choice but to race down to the bakery.
The pair of them looked worse for the wear thanks in no small part to the food poisoning. It was only a blind panic for their livelihood, their daughter, and the young man they definitely had come to love like a son that had them carefully bundling up to trudge down the stairs as soon as they could both manage.
Especially since neither Marinette nor Adrien was answering their cell phones.
“What on earth happened here?” Tom’s voice croaked, wrapping a heavy blanket around his pale shoulders.
Sabine hovered, but at a careful distance given the amount of rolling pins littering the bakery floor. “Are you two alright?”
Adrien and Marinette had been caught hugging each other for all they were worth.
“Mom! Dad!” Marinette leapt away in panic, pinwheeling backwards. “It’s not what it looks like.”
Pale as he was, Tom could barely manage a wry smile.
Sabine arched a brow that looked suspiciously like the one Alya used to pry for details. “Oh. So, the whole order for the Heroes Gala isn’t smashed all over the floor and counter?”
“Well...” Marinette gulped, frosting covered fingers lingering over her lips to keep from saying anything too incriminating. “Maybe it is...?”
Adrien merely grinned, as innocent as he could manage with incriminating traces of frosting in his hair. “It was an Akuma.”
“An Akuma?”
Marinette breathed a little easier with both of her parents' eyes now on her partner.
“Does that mean Ladybug and Chat Noir have come back?”
“Just in time for Heroes Day, too.” Beaming, Adrien’s hand reached for hers. “Honestly, we’re lucky they showed up when they did.”
Tom frowned, taking in the scale of the damage as he stifled a cough. “Do you think you’ll be able to clean up and start again tonight? We can call for help in the morning and let you both rest.”
“I think we’ve got the teamwork down, now.” Marinette squeezed Adrien’s hand. “You should both get some rest.”
After slowly making their way back up the stairs and cuddling up in bed beside his wife, Tom chuckled. “When do you think they will realize that Ladybug’s Lucky Charm would have fixed it all?”
Sabine snorted. “I suppose they would have to stop kissing each other first.”
“Not that you mind.”
“Of course not, dear.” Sabine breathed heavily as she turned, wincing with the achy effort. “It just means it will take a little longer for Marinette to put two and two together well enough to panic.”
Tom picked up his wife’s hand, pressing a kiss to her knuckles. “Want to bet on how long it takes?”
