Chapter Text
The mosasaurus sank back into the water with it"s kill under a dark sky speckled with stars.
In the dim light, the last raptor stood silently in the streets, framed by broken shops.
Blue swiveled her head, casting one last look at the man before her, his form clearly reflected in those golden eyes. As were her stripes, set deep in the wells of Owen"s mind.
Blue turned slowly and jogged down the street, the splashing of water and clicking of talons shattering the silence.
Running toward the end of the road.
Running toward the unknowns of Isla Nublar.
Running toward the distant, unknown future.
Maybe, Blue thought, she should have hugged him.
Maybe, I owe you a hug.
It was a week after the I.Rex was killed, the T.Rex had been content with the old park and left much of the forest to Blue.
A bird chirped on the log, cleaning it"s feathers.
As the ferns rustled, the bird jumped and tried to fly away.
Too late.
Jaws closed around one of it"s wings, ripping it off and spewing blood everywhere. The bird flapped once, twice, and went still.
Blue carried the body into some tall grasses and hid it as well she could, the left again in silence.
Half a day later, seven more birds, three rabbits and a squirrel joined the pile.
Far too much for one raptor.
Her thoughts wondered to Charlie, the nervous, inexperienced younger sister, she"ll never be able to feed herself, but Blue would be happy to help.
And Echo, she was the strongest, although Blue had her differences with Echo, she still loved her, she was an expert fighter.
Delta had a strange distaste for birds, something Blue never understood, it would be annoying to hunt rabbits, but it was her role to supply the pack.
If only there was a pack left.
Blue shook her head, trying to clear the thoughts. Claws shredding the leaves below her.
Snapping up two birds and a rabbit, Blue left in a flurry of movement.
Days were meaningless for raptors, day light and day dark. The same cycle, Blue alway couldn"t shake the habit of hunting for four. And every time she stared at the pile in a daze and eating her share.
Often, Blue thought back to the days in the paddock, and the only things who made it bearable was the company of her siblings.
And also Owen.
The last member of her pack besides herself.
The reason she hadn"t gone crazy from loneliness.
She still had a pack left, however small.
And she won"t give up now.
The rumble of a helicopter broke the silence of Isla Nublar, jolting Blue awake.
Staring at the rabbits and birds forlornly, she padded to a clearing to watch the copters.
Then she caught a scent.
Breaking into a run, she followed the sound of the motors until they landed outside a glass structure rising high into the air.
Hiding in the shadows, Blue watched as the passengers filed out. Most of them were dressed in black uniforms with guns strapped to their backs, but she had eyes only for one.
Dressed in a blue shirt with a pocketed vest, brown hair ruffled by the wind and green eyes sharp and alert, was Owen Grady.
Blue followed Owen at a distance, waiting as the other five people split off one by one to different labs.
Blue watched quietly as Owen pulled out some tools and opened the door, slipping in and closing it behind him. Her eyes were locked on the door, waiting for him to re-emerge.
As time went by, Blue grew more and more anxious, she was about to try and break down the door when there was a smell of sulfur and ozone.
Blue leaped back as the door was blasted of it"s hinges and a form was thrown violently from the third story window.
When Blue found him, Owen was lying on the hard-packed earth and out cold. Blood flowing from a thousand nicks due to the glass window and jeans stained red with it.
Blue huffed, she shouldn"t have left the rabbit when chasing down the copter, a gift would have worked nicely to show here intentions. But with Owen bloodied and unmoving, Blue can"t risk leaving.
Staring at Owen, old memories resurfaced.
"Why don"t you eat much, Blue?" Owen nudged the jerky towards the baby raptor, but Blue just pushed it back with a bark:
You should to eat some too.
Blue snuggled up to the man who was watching her sisters tussle with a red ball. Owen smiled warmly, gently stroking her with one hand. "You like me,huh?"
"Blue is the key, the other raptors listen to me because the beta does."
Blue trilled, even though she knew Owen couldn"t understand her: Silly, why won"t I? I like you too much for that.
Blue was agitated, the senses of a killer told her that Owen was dying of thirst and hunger. His body heat was down to a flickering candle. Blue cleaned his wounds over and over, like she once did her own.
But it didn"t work.
He wasn"t getting better.
She can"t hunt, all the meat-eaters a mile around probably smelt him by now. If she left now it would be the end of Owen.
But without food, he"ll die.
...Like Charlie
Like Delta
Like Echo
Blue didn"t have much of a concept of death, but she knew that if Owen died, he could never meet them again.
She won"t ever be able to meet him agin.
Owen needed food.
Or he would die.
Food.
Food..
Food...
After Owen fell into an unwakeable sleep, Blue made the choice, ripping of a piece of flesh from her back and holding it owen the man"s lips, dripping the blood down his throat.
Blood won"t be enough, he needed meat.
Blue had that, she"ll keep Owen alive no matter what.
With that, Blue steeled herself, and bit down.
"NO!!!"
If Owen"s legs weren"t broken and undergoing necrosis, he would have jumped to them as it is he tried before falling back down. "BLUE, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"
Blue gingerly put the severed limb to Owen"s lips, letting the blood drip into them.
For a brief second, Owen was shocked and dumbfounded. Staring into her eyes with confusion, then pain.
Turning and spitting out the blood, Owen snatched the limb from Blue and tried in vein to re-attach it to the stump. Cover the ghastly wound with his hand, as if it would his girl whole again.
"No, what has happened, no..."
Owen"s hands were trembling violently, blood dripping through his fingers and onto the ground, blotching the earth below them.
Blue lowered her head, moonlight reflected in her large amber eyes. Pushing away Owen"s hand with her good forearm, she picked up the limb again and put it to his mouth.
This time, she didn"t step back, pushing against Owen, staring at him with tenderness in her eyes.
Eat
Eat it
"..."
"Stop...Stop..."
"Please..."
"Blue, don"t do this..."
Blue couldn"t understand what he said, didn"t want to understand what he meant.
The pain was unbearable as Blue took off her second forearm, tears clouding her vision, she presses the still warm limb towards the human.
Blue felt the pain slowly fade.
When the blood from her forelimbs ran out, she began to tear at where ever her teeth can reach.
She wanted him to eat it.
But she could only get him to drink the blood.
And the only reason he did was Blue holding him down and propping his mouth open, slowing dripping it down his throat.
Owen was saying something again, she couldn"t hear or understand it through the fog in her head, becoming dizzy and weak herself.
The world was spinning.
She wanted Owen to understand.
Don"t resist, just eat the meat, drink the blood.
Or how else can you live.
Slowly, gradually. Something changed.
She no longer warmed Owen, instead, Owen heated her cooling body. No longer did Owen lean on her, now she was curled around him, laying her head across the man"s lap, looking up at him one last time.
Blood seeped through the ground, a brilliant carpet.
Blue"s eyes send one last message before going dull:
Live on
Live on..
Live...
In the end of ends, the dizzying sensation died with the pain. Slowly, the world around faded to black, and the forest in which she lived for the last two weeks was gone, melted into the darkness.
Before her, a dim light began to shine.
A man stood at the end of the road, framed by light, holding a squealing pig in his arms. Still wearing the blue shirt and old jeans, chin full of stubbles. Sleeves rolled up, showing fit and lean arms.
Bending down, the man put the pig down, the pink creature scuttled around him before running down the road past Blue, framed in the light of the rising sun.
Then, Owen looked at Blue.
And smiled.
Green eyes shining like moons.
Piercing through the dark, across the road.
Into Blue"s golden ones.
For a moment, Blue was still.
Then, Blue picked up the pace, sprinting across the Last Road and towards the man.
Blue hugged him with her now intact forelimbs.
Tightly.
With a huff, Blue dipped her head, and pushed it firmly against the man"s shoulder.
For my whole life I have waited
For you to come to me
As I lie dying
I see you in the sunlight
Holding out my favorite toy
Giving me a brilliant smile
Saying you"re sorry to be late
Alas
The words that I waited my whole life to say
Can no longer be spoken
"It"s all right"
