The Elements of Falling in Love (While Your Parents Plan a Coup)

Chapter 8: A Blessing

Chapter Text

To Rex’s utter surprise, not only was his father still awake and up at that time, but he was waiting for him. At least, he assumed he had been waiting for him because he had only barely knocked on the door to his quarters before it was sliding open.

His father was dressed down, but not sleep rumpled, and greeted him with a soft smile. “How was your date, Rex’ika?"

“I feel like I should ask how you knew about that.”

“I’m almost certain the whole system knows about it.”

“Buir!”

Jango laughed and gently guided him into the rooms. “Okay, perhaps that is a bit of an exaggeration. Still, you didn’t answer my question."

Rex dropped himself down onto one of his father’s couches and gave a heavy, besotted, sigh. “It went very, very well.”

“Oh?” Jango sat down across from him and raised an eyebrow. “Two very’s, hmm?”

Rex flushed even as he nodded. “Father, he is, he is nothing like I was expecting. He’s very clearly a Sith, and is almost what you would expect from one, but he is also so kind. And he gets embarrassed easily, but it's cute. He’s protective and a little bit crazy, but in the way all Force users are. I just, I really like him."

Jango was silent for a long moment before he was nodding lightly. “Yes, I can tell.”

He was pretty sure his face grew even darker as he cleared his throat to say, “I want to be with him. Not just as a fling or to have fun with. I want to actually court him. Officially. And I’d really like it to be something I had your blessing to do."

“Then you have it.”

Rex blinked and then stared at his father like he had never seen him before. “I, I have it? Just like that?”

Jango chuckled. “Of course, just like that. You care for him, yes? Why would I say no to you courting someone you clearly care for?”

“Because he’s a Sith?”

He snorted. “Rex, I’m clearly in the middle of forming an alliance with a Sith. I would be very hypocritical to tell you that you could not be with him because of his religion."

“There’s a big difference between a political alliance with the Sith, and sleeping with them.” Rex pointed out.

Jango just raised a pointed eyebrow and Rex cringed.

“Ah, buir, really!”

He laughed before shaking his head and saying seriously, “You are my ad’ika, Rex. My own connections to the Sith aside, I would never tell you who you could or could not have feelings for. And you clearly have feelings for Skywalker.”

A soft smile crossed his features and he gave an easy nod. “Yeah, yeah I really do.”

“You have my blessing then, Rex. I want you to be happy, and I am certain that Skywalker will be the one to do so. He’s clearly been in love with you since they got here.”

“What! No he hasn’t!”

Jango leveled him with an unimpressed look. “Yes. He has. He’s done nothing but stare at you like a lovesick puppy. We’ve all noticed. In fact, I was pretty sure your spar this morning was a courting offer.”

“Buir!

He grinned and gave a small shrug. “It isn’t my fault you are completely unobservant.”

“I thought he was just, well, being a creepy self obsessed Sith.”

“You didn’t notice that these three aren’t exactly the normal Sith?”

“No! I was trying to avoid them!"

His father laughed again and gave him a loving, fond look. “Well, I’m glad you stopped avoiding him, and in the way you did. Means I won my bet with Kenobi.”

Rex let out an indignant squawk and crossed his arms. “You bet on us!”

“Well, only when you would actually give him a chance. And what it would take for that chance to happen.”

“You’re awful.”

“I only want you both to be happy, Rex.” Jango assured him softly. “I look forward to having Skywalker as a member of our clan. Especially if he continues to put a smile on your face like the one you had when you got here.”

Said besotted smile spread across his face again as he nodded. “Yeah, yeah I really think he will.”

“Good. Just make sure that Kenobi and I are there when you actually do a courting spar. We’d like to bet on a winner.”

“Really, buir!”

Jango just laughed and Rex couldn’t help grinning. With his father’s full support, Rex only really had one thing on his mind now. And that was to fall in love with his Sith Lord.
