Chapter 59: Anniversary: I'll Make Sure Each One From Now is Remembered Fondly

Notes:

Happy new year, all! ;o;/ Originally I hoped to have this posted on Thanksgiving but I'm slow, then Christmas but my internet went out...then Ao3 was down...I just decided to wait until new year since i sadly don't have any other fics to post. ;u;

Thank you all for sticking with the fic so long! I hope this year will for reals finally be the time I get to finish it up...it should be if it goes to plan, though few things ever do.

Still, I'm glad you all have enjoyed it so far and I hope you continue to up until it finally wraps up. ;o;/ I have lots I want to do with this AU when it's done...it'll be nice to pace it a little more LAUGH.

Chapter Text

Even as he rouses slightly from his slumber, Alva feels absolutely exhausted. It likely does not help that he stayed up later than usual to discuss future plans with that village and offer information he gathered from Florian in return for plenty Luca obtained from Demi. All of it was immensely fascinating which, regrettably, led to the two of them staying up quite a bit later than usual. It was worth it in the end, of course, and Luca was certainly happy to have extra time to spend alone with Alva after the two spent so much with others. One never knows what the next night will bring, after all.

In this case…he feels unwilling to get up and merely shifts about to get comfortable again and resume his sleep. Food can wait…a night or two where he remains at home will not hurt anyone. He has plenty to document and Luca is likely to want to do the very same alongside his gardening work slated for tonight. Perhaps just a bit longer…

Whilst the scent of food waking him is less uncommon as of late, it takes Alva a few moments after reluctantly stirring from his sleep to realize that Luca must be working with his smaller size at this time. The clock is certainly ticking on the final nights before his fairy is allowed to use that enchantment again, but he would never say it is worth it to push the issue by expending so much energy to cook something while so very small. It is possible in some ways, yes, however it expends a lot of effort for obvious reasons. It is best simply to wait for Alva to wake up.

It…hm…there is another voice downstairs that he did not expect to hear. It explains why Luca is gone and why he can smell food, he supposes, though he was certainly not expecting company. He rarely ever is, however, and it is not exactly uncommon for others to drop by unannounced. Usually it is Jack, though the odd beast has been mostly absent for awhile now, and most other times it is Emil and Ada. This time…this would explain why he failed to wake up. Ah...he does not wish to get up. It would be foolish to neglect his uninvited guest any further, unfortunately.

Alva nuzzles at his pillow and utters a quiet sigh into it as he does so. He does not want to get up...he feels exhausted and he knows going down there will only make it worse. Yet, as with everything, he knows he has to no matter how uncomfortable it makes him. It would be cruel to force Luca to entertain that guest all on his own. It...yes...he needs to get up...ah...his body feels heavy and his eyes much more so. He is beginning to suspect Luca's presence is in part to blame for his seasonal issues being harsher and longer lived. He has never had it last this long prior and he has been capable of ignoring his evening grogginess decently well. Lately...he feels horrible. Simply getting out of bed is a challenge even for him...he would much rather just sleep.

The large beast feels his eyes fall closed again and his breathing start to slow, however he does try to push himself up off the bed soon after. It is too much to leave Luca on his own like this...he needs to get up. No matter how agonizing it may be, no matter how deeply he wishes to sleep, he needs to get up. He can simply return to sleep sooner than usual...yes...he will tell himself that no matter how unlikely he is to follow through.

His muscles reluctantly flex and his eyes open in order to force himself out of his bed and to his bathing room. Alva puts minimal effort into his cleaning compared to normal, however...well, Herman will not care in the least how disheveled he looks. That beast has seen Alva at his worst and anything beyond that is an improvement. It is a blessing and a curse in many ways just how comfortable he is around the one that tried to kill him, however such thoughts are not at the forefront of his mind at this time. Alva would rather be asleep after all, and having to avoid that...ah, it is unpleasant. He does not wish to put his all into cleaning up then covering himself in layers upon layers of clothing. It is more comfortable to remain in this semi-loose, casual outfit instead.

Quietly, though not purposely so, Alva treads down the stairway until reaching his bottom floor. One glance to the main room and he can see Victor is sound asleep in a collection of pillows and blankets no doubt filled with the pup's family's scents. He can already faintly catch the scent of Emil and Ada from where he stands. Turning to the other room, his kitchen, gives Alva a much less expected sight. How long has this been going on, he wonders...?

His former coworker's back is to him due to his home's layout, however it does not stop Alva from seeing most of what is going on. Luca is standing on Herman's shoulder similarly to how he does with others all the while the lycan goes about cooking something on the stove…something sweet, yet there is some savory he picks up on as well. A standard breakfast of pancakes alongside bacon and eggs is what he thinks he smells, however there is another cake-like scent he picks up on as well. One can only guess when it comes to this beast.

There are also movements made to another project on the counter, thus Herman's attention is split between various tasks as well as Luca's input. There is plenty of that now and likely has been since the start. Alva goes unnoticed by Luca for now, though he doubts Herman has neglected to sense his approach given the slightly tenser stance his former coworker takes. This goes unnoticed by the fairy as well, though perhaps Luca merely assumes his words are affecting the beast he is standing on.

The tiny fairy is in his usual uniform, unsurprisingly so, however Herman has shed his coat and rolled up his sleeves in an attempt to minimize any mess that may otherwise result. There is an apron being worn as well...it is a familiar sight even if his former coworker was less likely to cook or bake back when they lived together. Anyway, his dark green undershirt and even darker pants are still spotless for the time being. His currently bare hands, however, are coated in flour and likely other dry substances. It is unsurprising which of the two is doing a bulk of the work here.

Even so, Luca is certainly not going to be left out and voices this clearly. "No, no! I told you how to do it and you still mess it up! It's milk not that stuff! Can you not read?! Are you blind as well as deaf?!" This is hissed rather than yelled as if to avoid waking Alva or Victor by being too loud, however the fairy's tone is most certainly louder than usual. His wing twitches with clear agitation and his teeth are no doubt bared as he seems much too tempted to pull at his father's ear. Wisely, he decides against it.

Likewise, Alva does not need to see his former coworker's face to know Herman no doubt wears quite a sneer upon his lips. "I know precisely what I am doing and what his preferences are. Unlike you, I spent a majority of my early life figuring out what he does and does not like. Heavy cream in place of milk for pancakes makes them far more favorable to him just as it does when added to his hot cocoa. Sit down and watch so perhaps you may learn something about your so-called courtship partner." This tone is one Alva heard somewhat early into his stay in the city...it is cold, neutral, and generally reserved for those that greatly offended Herman in some form or another. It is polite to the bare minimum. He often heard this when dealing with city 'higher ups' that his former coworker never respected yet had to play nice with.

Luca recoils at this and is clearly stunned to silence as a result of the seemingly unexpected remark. More than likely, Herman has stayed quiet until this breaking point and decided to rather pointedly remind Luca of his place here. Alva would have been concerned of retaliation in the past, however...he knows better than to assume the worst by now. These two have also clearly been at this for awhile judging from how cluttered the kitchen is and how 'relaxed' Luca is. On top of this, as Luca has said, his former coworker values his experiments above almost everything else.

While Alva does feel pity for the fairy, it is not worth cutting in and it was indeed Luca's own doing that caused such a retort. His fairy dwells on it for a short time before reluctantly quieting down further. "At least get the vanilla right, then." As always when it comes to those Luca dislikes, there is no admission of defeat and no apology given. Alva finds this rude regardless, however he does understand the sentiment.

Gratefully for Luca, the large beast so calmly carrying out this task is not one to lash out too much. Herman brushes all of that aside and returns to his usual tone and likely his usual smile. "Of course. This was one of the first recipes I used vanilla in and that's how he got so used to the scent of it each morning. I started stocking up on the stuff and trying it with other sweets shortly after." Indeed. Pancakes were simple to make, easy to eat, and socially acceptable in a breakfast setting which made them common for the first several years of living together. It was one of the first things Alva learned to make.

There is no doubt a sneer on Luca's face judging from the tone taken as he speaks again. "Just make what I told you before he gets up. If you're going to be here, then be useful. I didn't ask for a history lesson." Hm...yes, the tiny thing most certainly has yet to notice Alva standing across the way beside the staircase. Perhaps it is for the best seeing as Luca would only get more upset due to that territorial nature of his. If not for that, he would likely try to ignore the fact Herman is here at all.

"You should be if you want to learn anything about him at any halfway decent pace. Alva isn't someone you can read easily no matter how many advantages you think you have. Ignoring a wealth of knowledge about him is foolish to say the least." This is also true, though Alva does suppose he understands to an extent why Luca will not take advantage of it. Alva is the same in that regard...he could ask all he wants about everything that has gone on between them and, though he has to an extent, he instead prefers not to prolong interaction. It still hurts even if he has gotten better about tolerating it.

Luca no doubt wrinkles his nose prior to turning away from his father to instead look toward the food below. "That's disgusting. There's nothing you can tell me that I won't find out myself about him anyway-- if I haven't already. I've made plenty of progress with him." The tiny thing utters a huff, his wing twitching with a mixture of irritation and...hm...that looks almost like the movement Luca will do when nervous. Such emotions go closely together anyway.

As almost always, Herman completely disregards such a hostile tone and chuckles. "We both know that is not even close to the reason why you refuse to use common sense here. If you didn't even know about this trick with pancakes then you are woefully out of your depth. This is just a twig at the entryway of the forest that is Alva's many quirks and preferences." The large creature shrugs his shoulders slightly and seems to ignore the sinking feeling Luca appears to be having after hearing that. "But if you want to spend decades learning even basic stuff then by all means do so. I can understand wanting to figure the deeper stuff out yourself, but basic information such as his favorite food and how to make it is critical and not worth neglecting."

Once again, Luca foolishly steps forward to retaliate verbally before anything else can be stated. "I know plenty about his favorite food, just not the tiny details that require ingredients we normally don't have." Again, it feels as if Luca would physically lash out if he had the capability to do so yet is instead getting by with a harsh tone and bared teeth. Surely the fairy knows that arguing this is meaningless...?

There is no doubt Herman raises a brow as he continues focusing on his task rather than bothering to so much as glance at Luca. "Really, now? Tell me then what his favorite meal happens to be, hm? Dessert as well while you are at it. If you really are up to snuff, you will know some snacks he enjoys as well when he feels hungry yet it is too early to make anything substantial." The other beast lifts one of his hands from his current task to wave it slightly toward the cabinets and drawers situated around the two of them. "While we are at it, why not cover the organization method he uses and why he does so? Surely by now you know that, hm? It hasn't changed too much since I last saw him-- in fact, I'd say it's just refined more to further my point." Hence why Herman has had no troubles with finding everything he needs and more during his visits here.

This fact seems to sink in fully alongside the magnitude of what is being said, leading to Luca's ears drooping slightly and his overall demeanor changing to one significantly less standoffish. Still, the tiny thing shakes his head and responds with just as much venom as he did before. "He said he likes boar the best so far as savory goes, but honeyberry desserts are easily his favorite for sweet. Fairies or mice tend to be his go-to for snacking unless he has leftovers lying around or gifted tarts from Claude." The portion regarding home organization goes unanswered, as expected, though it is of lesser concern anyway.

Expectedly, Herman shakes his head. "Wrong on all accounts. Did you even bother asking him anything at all during your time spent with him? Here he may favor those things listed since he scarcely has a choice in the matter. Anywhere else, he is much more refined in his taste when given the resources." Luca looks about ready to contest this, however his father swiftly cuts him off by continuing onward. "Bovine steak very lightly seasoned with garlic and rosemary alongside a blackberry sauce is by far his favorite for savory dishes. Sweet is harder to tackle, he goes a few different ways, however he showed a particular fondness for crème caramel and chocolate mousse. Between those, he leaned to the flan."

"As for his kitchen setup, it was rearranged to better suit our particular needs when cooking or baking. Items that are often used are in cupboards or drawers nearest the location he is most likely to be when needing them. Things that are required for commonly used recipes or tasks tend to be bunched together for ease in use. There is a lot missing here, however it is all more or less the same." Herman resumes his current task, whatever it may be, and ignores the clearly deflated body language Luca has on display off to the side of the large creature's head. "You should know better by now not to play games you know you can't win. Roughly three years doesn't hold a candle to decades spent together and you know it. Stop playing the fool."

Silence takes the two for a short time, leading Alva to wonder if perhaps he should simply go upstairs rather than wait down here where he is. He will hear all of this regardless, though, and…well, he knows better than to intervene. These two have their own problems to sort through and it would be imprudent to disrupt it. Just as he has spent time alone or mostly alone with Herman off and on since reuniting, Luca will need to do the same to sift through everything that has gone on. Living together is a harsh reality they all must accept and adapt to no matter how painful it may be.

Luca remains uncharacteristically quiet for a fair amount of time, no doubt biting his tongue in an attempt to scrounge what little pride he can from this. Being humbled a bit will do the tiny thing good given how brash Luca tends to act, but Alva will admit it is difficult to see. He cares deeply for his fairy and, though he understands one must be firm and ensure the one he cares for does not get too reckless, it can be difficult to act coldly or in defiance of what a loved one wants. It is only for the best that he ever does such a thing, yet it will be painful even so.

Inevitably, the silence is broken albeit by Herman rather than Luca. His tone this time is quieter, more solemn if Alva had to describe it. "We both know the reason you will not talk to me about all of this and it isn't just because you hate me. Jealousy, envy, fear, and a hefty dose of imposter syndrome are the real culprits, hm? You probably think he only loves you because he loved me, don't you? You think he will abandon you now that I am back, correct?" And, as always, the other lycan knows exactly where to strike for maximum effect. Alva does turn away this time, unwilling to see whatever response Luca may have to such words.

Audibly, however, he hears only the sound of utensils tapping against pots or pans until Luca finds it in himself to speak. His voice is quiet, shameful, and frightened yet he still manages to sound irritated at certain points. "He had someone he loved back then...he still spent most his time with you. He lived, ate, sparred, hunted, and slept with you instead of her. If she couldn't contend…I…" The fairy trails off here, his voice expressing a vulnerability Alva never once expected to hear anywhere near Luca's father.

While meetings have been immensely scarce, Luca always acts understandably cold and prefers not to address Herman in any form. Even tonight, each word was spoken with venom and out of demand rather than for interaction or information. It is clear Luca wants nothing to do with his father yet is tolerating this experience out of necessity and, more than likely, because he knows Ada will not allow the tiny thing to see Victor anymore if bad habits are picked up on. While the pup is asleep will be the only time Luca can express his frustration and it showed in how they spoke with one another when Alva first arrived downstairs.

In this case…it feels more akin to a proper conversation. It is something Luca has expressed remorse over in various ways yet would never dare speak of for fear of seeming to lack confidence before a creature he is dead set on courting successfully. While there is still resentment, it is clear Luca does indeed see use in furthering an interaction between the two of them just this once. There is likely some hope in getting any form of validation or comfort even if from a source Luca detests.

Rather than rub salt in the wound, Herman does answer properly and even glances to Luca this time around. Alva figures he may as well resume his observation rather than remain turned away. "You know better than to make baseless assumptions from partial information. I taught you that much, did I not? The female Alva was with back then had many stark differences to you beyond the obvious species ones. So much as I loathe to say it, you are superior to her in a multitude of ways." Luca's mourning of sorts pauses here as the fairy looks up abruptly, his eyes wide.

Much to Luca's astonishment, Herman continues without prompting. Expectedly, he sounds bitter here despite managing a neutral tone most of the night thus far. "She was resourceful, manipulative, and only humored a relationship between the two in hopes of genetically sound offspring. It was a very clinical desire whereas Alva…he was one whom so truly wanted a lifelong companion." All things Alva found out much, much too late due to his naivety back then. The logical mindset she had meshed well with his own, however he…he was too unused to interaction back then to be able to identify false kindness. By then, Herman had no need to alert Alva to any of this either.

"She played into that desire and won him over quickly. In the end, it was always about her own goals rather than him. Her affectionate gestures were stiff and unnatural, but it was enough to fool someone who knew nothing of how a mate would act toward him. How is he to know what is or is not normal during his first instance of courtship with an unfamiliar female? Past observations do not account for personal quirks." Thus, when it came to things such as kissing or touching one another in a friendly manner, Alva was clueless as to what may have been fake versus simply how she handled things. Modern lycans have many more methods he was unused to on top of that and, seeing as Herman was his only other prior reference for modern behavior, he assumed any deviations were personal taste.

Ah…it is quite humiliating now that he knows what to look for, however Alva cannot blame himself too much in the end. His parents were perfect role models for ancient behavior and more instinctual forms of affection, but modern ones have so much added in that just one instance of experiencing what affection may be like was not enough to identify fakes. Practice rounds are, in most ways, also very fake which…ah…never mind it.

Seeing as Luca was never told much in depth about that female from long ago, it is clear the tiny thing appears sorrowful upon hearing all of this. While it is most certainly comforting to the fairy to know his past competitor was ultimately a fake, it must be distressing to hear part of the reason for Alva's current distance kept from others. While Herman's role is much more potent, hers still wounded Alva enough to the point he likely would not have attempted courtship anytime soon after that event.

That aside, some of Herman's attention shifts back to his culinary tasks even if it is clear a majority of it remains on his conversation. His eyes drift back to the pans before him as he speaks again. "You are correct in that Alva always leaned toward me. He never knew it, but subconsciously or not he felt closer to me than he ever did with her and it is pretty clear to the both of us why that was." So much as Alva wishes he did not, he also understands now why that would be. There is a reason he refuses to think of her name even as he will now think and speak the name of the one he once called his dearest friend. The one who essentially ended his life and destroyed almost any chance of a normal existence.

"I was never entirely fake with him, even near the end, and I did express myself to him freely for a good amount of the time we spent together. Right from the start, I made it a point to get as close to him as possible for my own safety as well as to ensure a strong ally. I will freely admit I fell for him pretty fast, it is hard not to do so as you found out, so I was a little more…flirtatious with him than necessary." The other beast chuckles at this, no doubt further amused by Luca's displeasure, however it is a hollow sound. Alva doubts Luca can tell the difference, but Alva most certainly can after so much time spent together.

That laugh trails off, instead replaced with just as empty a 'cheerful' tone as that chuckling held. "Even so, your theory crumbles beyond that point. He never loved me. Why would he? Especially for a vanishing species, choosing another of the same sex as a mate is abhorrent behavior. We would never create a pack, we would never further our species, and we would aid in quickening the dying gasps of our own kind." Especially when it is hybridization and low fertility that has been a majority to blame. Not being able to replace the pure lycans killed over the course of many years…that, ultimately, has been what has led to their failure.

"A female would be necessary even if we did work out, so it would never be as close as either of us would have liked. While I believe he would have warmed up eventually had I not tarnished our relationship, it worked for the best in the end. I feel, even though he thought he did, he never loved her either. If he had, he never would have allowed himself to truly open up again." The other wolf clearly still laments this even if Alva cannot say for certain how much of all this is true or not. It does make sense in some regards, he supposes…still, it is difficult to accept given how everything ended between them.

Nevertheless, Luca appears to take it at face value seeing as it benefits him to do so. For the tiny fairy, all of this is no doubt a relief to hear and thus he remains silent for Herman to continue on. "For that same reason, it is a blessing he never did end up falling for me no matter how I tried. I can promise you he never would have recovered had I truly been as close with him as you assumed." Unfortunately, that is very likely true given how difficult things were just as friends.

Luca appears to mull this over for a short time as silence takes the two, however it is never long when it comes to his fairy or the one he once worked alongside. This time, Luca breaks the silence between them. "I was worried for awhile that my fairy portions were what would cause me the most problems when it comes to winning Alva over…I often think now those same parts of me are the only reason I may be able to court him. Hearing all of this solidifies it, I think." The tiny thing appears more focused on thinking than on being angry at this point, allowing for a bit more of a normal conversation for the time being. Luca gets in moods such as this, so it is not exactly surprising.

"I don't know if he'd like me as much if I couldn't possibly offer him a family someday…I still don't know if I really can or not, though." Luca's attention shifts back to Herman, hinting to an unspoken question. The tiny thing still does not like the idea of conversing with this beast, however he knows right now there is an extreme benefit to certain information being gathered. It seems to help that he no longer views the other as a rival.

No doubt Herman realizes this as well judging from the snickering he utters prior to a small nod. His voice is quite neutral all the same, just as he was during his studies. "I believe so. While I never saw it myself, I can almost guarantee it was an option your mother had at her disposal when I consider what we know of her. Knowing what I do of you and how your body has behaved, I imagine you could have just about anything an incubus does. Best to use that knowledge wisely and practice some self-control, hm?" This last line is spoken in jest with a tone to match, urging an embarrassed huffing from Luca.

"Altering your body to shift between male and female or to hide your tail or wings, distorting the line between dreams and reality, and of course you may drug him without meaning to just by kissing him. There is a lot to be wary of when it comes to your sort even if our kind is pretty resistant to that stuff." Herman snickers at what must be quite an amusing expression made by Luca, his eyes shifting their focus back to his culinary work soon enough. "Most don't take kindly to your sort for good reason, but Alva seems to trust you anyway. As you said, if anything, it does increase your odds. You aren't a genetic dead end anymore, hm? That's a hefty advantage in this world. Increased fertility while retaining pure blood is a massive boon."

In response to this, Luca stands up a bit straighter and no doubt tries to appear more confident than he may truly be. "I'm careful around him and I'm doing my best to figure everything out. I think a few things have been affecting him from the start, but…it's not much and I think it helped calm him down. Lately there's more…I-I won't hurt him, though." 'More', hm? Alva suspected as much, though hearing it confirmed does help with his hypotheses.

Herman taps one of the spatulas against the pan, humming as he does so. "If something happens, you will be the one getting hurt. Such an occurrence would indeed lead to him being emotionally wounded as well, however I do stress it is you in danger here, not him. If you slip up at the wrong time, he will kill you without even realizing it. Watch it during the new moon, hm? A female's scent is more enticing when combined with your passive allure." So much as Alva would like to contest this seeing as he did just fine around Ada until the entirety of his mind was taken by her hypnosis and he was quite literally pinned down, this does make a valid point. Luca's soothing effect has already changed slightly over time.

"I-I don't even know if I can do that! Any of it!" Luca's voice comes out slightly strained, likely due to embarrassment, yet he does seem to take these words to heart all the same. His ears lower slightly and his wing's twitching suggests unease. "I'm…I'm unsure what I can and can't do yet, so I'm trying to figure it out when he's asleep or out on patrols. I…I don't want him to see me if I'm…" Luca trails off here, though the words that fit this sentence are few and easy to guess.

While Alva assumes there might have been pity expressed here under most circumstances, he cannot be certain from where he stands. His former coworker finishes one of the tasks and responds in a neutral tone akin to the one used in prior conversation. "I doubt Alva would care too much about things like that, but he would appreciate the gesture all the same. You have always been stubborn about keeping your species and personality mostly intact, so I can say with certainty he likes you as you are and knows you will not try to change on him."

Despite the reassurances, Luca shakes his head faintly and appears hesitant to continue. "It's not that, I just…I want to look my best for him and failed shapeshifting can be…" Gruesome, to say the least. If one's body runs out of energy or does not yet understand how to rearrange itself as it needs to, one can end up in not only a horrific amount of pain but looking much too akin to a ravaged corpse. Alva never had such problems, gratefully, but many others have. It is one of the many innate risks of a shapeshifting species.

The fairy's progenitor seems to realize this soon after, uttering a small 'ah' to further emphasize this recognition. "I see, I see. Yeah, that feels a bit more understandable. Alva will always tell you he won't mind, but he is most certainly one to keep up appearances so he definitely understands the importance of looking one's finest in front of others. An incubus' shifting capabilities are limited, at least, which should help limit accidents." That is true, though many things can still go horrifically wrong. The tail or wing alone could result in some unpleasant accidents…

Nevertheless, it does ease Luca's nerves. The two shift to a slightly more comfortable silence after this…though such a thing lasts only a few moments, of course. Luca is still as pushy as ever and continues to sound immensely irritated as he speaks more often than not. With his fears alleviated, it seems things move back to business as usual. Similarly, Herman's tone shifts back to one of neutrality bordering disinterest. Formality seems to be how the other beast interacts with his son…hm, it makes sense, Alva supposes.

It is likely time for him to return upstairs for now. These two are clearly in need of time spent alone together and it would be improper to step in now. On top of that, he would rather return to sleep-- hm? Alva blinks as he turns around to see Victor staring back at him with those wide little eyes of his. The pup must have sensed something dangerous nearby and become on edge…ah, he most certainly should retire for now.

Because it seems as if the tiny thing may request attention soon, Alva sets his finger to his lips then shows his palm. No doubt Herman has taught the tiny thing to briefly silence himself so the adult lycan can scurry away undetected or get the pup to a location where it will not awaken the others. If how he was eased into society is any indication, these motions will have been taught near the beginning. Even if not, it seems to work for now and allows Alva to retreat upstairs and back to his bed.

While he does hear Victor begin to stir and thus utter some quiet sounds as Alva settles back in to his own bed, the tiny thing did at least offer more than enough time for him to be out of sight. Ah…a bit more sleep will be nice. Luca will be fine…

-x-x-

"Alva?"

Not this again…it feels as if this always happens around this time. Sometimes earlier, sometimes later, but always within the same general timeframe from what Alva can tell of the seasons and his own internal calendar of sorts. He has been thrown off a little as of late, likely thanks to Luca, however he can still roughly tell it is about the same time as usual. It is all just the same…

Despite everything, it still hurts. He still feels the aching sense of loss and the agony of betrayal. The harsh, cold grip of loneliness as well. His time with Luca has been comparatively short which means it is not uncommon for him to feel such raw emotions after spending so much time engulfed by them. Despite his attempts to keep them hidden away, they often surge forth when he is unable to do much of anything about it. Be it partially asleep or fully so, he…he often has to face those vile feelings he has worked so hard to stifle.

"Alva?"

It is agonizing, really. He knows Luca sounds too much like his father…he never noticed until these feelings became more common when dragged from his sleep. Perhaps he did not want to notice. He did not want to hear anything similar to the voice he once gladly sought out. He refused to acknowledge the tonal shifts or mannerisms that reminded him far too much of the one that nearly killed him. Clearly, he thought, it was simply because he draws such comparisons with everyone he speaks with. In terms of time spent with others in a humanoid body, that former friend of his was by far the one he interacted with the most.

"Alva…?"

"You really should not be that close to him, you know. He can be snappy when he gets up."

"Don't tell me what I should or shouldn't do with him."

"Fine, fine. It is not a new moon anyway, I guess. Just don't say I did not warn you if you end up cut in half, yeah?"

"Shut up. He won't hurt me."

Ah…right…both of them are around now, are they not? When did…yes…he supposes he remembers now. Truth be told, he thought that was a dream. It would be much too nice if it were in many ways, hm? Alva is vaguely aware of the light stroking at the bridge of his nose, as is often the case when Luca tries to wake him at a small size, yet…his mind is much too busy. He still feels tired. This…all of it still feels like a dream.

"You are lucky Victor is asleep right now. Is it really any wonder Ada doesn't want you around him?"

"Shut up."

The scent of food is strong, much more so than usual, and not simply because Luca is nearby. Some of it smells sweet, some of it savory…pancakes, sausage, eggs, bacon…cake…? Pudding as well, if he is not mistaken. Dessert is not normally had around breakfast…he supposes it may be later than usual, he has likely slept far beyond when he usually would, yet combining meals is unusual. At most, he imagines it would be lunch rather than dinner and dessert, right?

"I cannot fathom how he tolerates such behavior from you. If you speak to your own father this way I dare not consider how you have treated poor Alva over the last two years."

"I could say the same about you staying with Emil and Ada-- h-hey! Put me down! You just said not to get close to him and then you go and grab me! Liar!"

"Eh? I was by no means lying, he is snappy when he gets up. I'm merely saving you from getting sliced to pieces if he lifts his head and bites the treat set so enticingly on his nose."

"There you go again with things that aren't true! Put me down and I'll wake him up so the food doesn't get cold!"

"Uh huh, right. You were doing such a good job of that, weren't you? What were you just yelling at me about regarding saying things that aren't true?"

It…how does he feel about this, really? The one whom so tried to end his life and the one whom so has done a majority of the work in piecing him back together…is it really acceptable that they are so very similar? That they are related? That they can so carelessly be mistaken for one another when struggling to awaken from a dead sleep? Such a thing feels like some impossible nightmare. To have the one he loves be related to the one that caused him to lose hope in connecting with other creatures…it feels like some cruel twist that will later come to bite him.

Yet, even so, Alva somehow finds himself ignoring such a thing as of late. Luca has shown time and time again how desperately he wishes to please him…he supposes his former coworker was the same, but…he supposes, in the end, he will just have to trust his fairy. He will have to believe that Luca will not find something else to become absorbed in or decide Alva is no longer worth the time spent easing him into a somewhat normal relationship. It is all tiring to think of…he has done so many times over by now. Regardless of what happens, he does love Luca and will remain loyal to him…he…he just needs to keep trying. This hardwired loyalty is part of why it is difficult to completely disregard his former coworker…this is also why he is so cautious. Opening up to just anyone will surely lead to his end.

Affection is difficult and trust is still just as much so. He trusts Luca, yet there are limits to that and hesitations that still arise. Alva enjoys touching his fairy and offering affection, yet he holds back and…and he still becomes wary of receiving the same in return. It still feels as if that final step is too hard to take…ah, oh well. He will get there in time. For now, he should reluctantly drag himself awake. He has slept for much too long anyway.

Slowly, the large beast's eyes blink open and he reluctantly pushes himself off the bed in order to sit upright. He would normally be irritated at being seen just after waking by someone other than Luca, but…well, his former cohabitant is used to it. At the very least, Alva did clean up a bit earlier prior to returning to bed. His short hair always tends to look just fine when waking unlike the longer version of it. Such ease is one of many reasons he adjusted it.

Herman notices first seeing as his attention is not entirely on Luca whereas the tiny fairy's full irritation and focus is locked on the beast holding him. Still, the little thing does finally take note upon seeing his father's expression change. Because of this, the other lycan speaks first. "Good evening, Alva. I hope you are just as hungry as you usually are when waking because I went ahead and made you plenty to start your night off with." He supposes he is, yes.

Luca voices his own greeting soon after, begrudgingly ignoring the fact he is being held in quite a restrictive manner-- just as Ada held him back then, in fact, though such a thing is obvious. Alva has used this same technique on countless other fairies in the past even if Luca rarely needs such treatment. There is a claw-tipped finger set on either side of the tiny thing's head to restrain the head and thus ensure biting is not possible, one finger set over Luca's middle, and one more set up between the legs to prevent the restrained creature from squirming too much or backing out from this grasp. It ensures the subject can be held gently yet securely while any testing can be run. In this case, Alva imagines it was done purely out of annoyance.

"Good evening, Alva! Are you feeling okay? You still seem really tired…" Which the tiny thing appears guilty over and, judging from what Alva recalls of earlier, may be starting to realize he is likely to blame for. Herman realizes this as well yet remains silent. "Ah, anyway, I assume you want to get up by now though, right? Since he is here tonight, I figured he should be useful and make you some food-- erm, all of us, actually! Victor is here too, though he's asleep downstairs. We'll bring him up when it's time for us to eat." Hm, yes…the pup should be able to try a little more food by now alongside his dedicated feedings.

The large beast's eyes trail to a cart of sorts holding the food in question mentioned prior. He supposes it is indeed easier to carry a wheeled cart up the stairs then set it down as opposed to walking up and down said stairs in order to carry each dish. It keeps everything close by without much hassle, too. Hm…it is likely everyone will eat in here as opposed to downstairs at the couch, then. Hopefully Ada will not mind this instance of bad manners around the pup as he imagines she very much does use her dining table unlike Alva.

Regardless, Alva nods faintly then offers his hand to his former coworker. Luca likely does not wish to be held like that all night. "Good evening to the both of you. I assume things have been relatively civil thus far seeing as Victor is present." 'Relatively' being key here as, obviously, neither one will hold back quite so much when the pup is sound asleep. Luca may still do so in order to prevent Ada from banning the tiny thing from taking part in babysitting, however this feels a little unlikely as seen earlier.

His former coworker does gently place Luca into Alva's palm as urged which does significantly please the tiny creature, needless to say. Luca seems more focused on readjusting his clothing and moving to Alva's shoulder than responding, thus Herman does so instead. "I suppose you could say that, yes. Luca is still as unruly as I remember when last seeing him-- before that reunion, of course." Hm…one can assume that was a fight due to the fact the last those two saw of each other was after Luca's mother had been killed.

The other large male goes about getting a respectably sized tray set onto the bed over Alva's legs prior to beginning to get various plates set onto it. It seems, as assumed, everyone will be eating here tonight. "Even so, he is behaving around Victor, so Ada will be happy to hear that. Perhaps we can meet up more often in that case, hm? She does enjoy having a small break every so often." Alva can imagine so, yes. She and Emil work full time and have a pup to raise, so he can imagine there is very little time for rest. Once more, a pack would help with this as family raises family quite well. He supposes this is where he and his former housemate come into play.

Luca, though pleased with the compliment, is overwhelmingly less impressed by everything else said. The tiny thing remains seated closer to the edge of Alva's shoulder rather than to the beast's neck, though he assumes this is due to Herman's presence. "You could go just about anywhere else to give her a break and not bother us as you do it." This is deadpanned, as expected of Luca, though of course Alva knows that while logical for an outsider, it is not nearly as much so for those of their kind. Unfortunately, Ada covered this while Luca was away.

Rather than retread obvious ground, the other beast's smile widens faintly and he waves aside such words. "Barring the obvious problems with that, I would never want to neglect visiting Alva tonight of all nights!" There is a clear problem with this statement, however Herman cuts in before Luca can bite down on it. "Well, that is, now that I am allowed to see him, of course, and we are on…okay terms." The tiny fairy grimaces at this all the while his father ignores such an expression and continues setting their 'table'.

"We don't care about whatever whims you have tonight about visiting here. Go somewhere else instead of bothering us." Luca grunts, keeping that standoffish tone and body language even while seated on Alva's shoulder as opposed to Herman's. It is understandable of course, though Alva considers it rude to say the least and would normally scold such behavior. His former coworker can handle such a task if so desired.

Interestingly, Herman instead opts for a different approach. "Oh? You don't know? Well, I should not be shocked by now, hm? You seem to know hardly anything at all about Alva." As expected, this quite easily riles Luca right back up and causes the tiny thing to stand once again and bare his pathetic little fang. The insults slung are easily ignored. "Such a shame, such a shame. Has he neglected you this much, Alva? Are you really sure you want to stay with such a creature? I treated you much better even before going for your throat."

While speaking of such an event makes sense to Alva as opposed to pretending it never happened at all, this alongside the obvious taunting only further irritates Luca. Though he recognizes his former coworker is playing around, it seems Luca either does not grasp that or assumes Alva has failed to do so and becomes restless as a result. It is likely his fairy has had very little extended interaction with Herman…on top of this, it is likely, as a father, the other male would be rather neutral and strict rather than one to tease and play around.

"Don't you dare speak to him that way! Does it really mean that little to you?! Don't you understand what you did to him?! This feels low even for you! I've treated him better than you ever could have and this proves it!" Luca's teeth remain bared and his stance very much one that screams he would fight the larger beast right here and now if capable. Gratefully, his enchantment has not been returned to him which renders such a thing impossible.

Herman, meanwhile, merely raises a brow. "And yet you speak on his behalf instead of letting Alva respond in his own way. I will say again, this only proves how little you know of him. The only reason he is keeping quiet is because you lack the ability to do so. You apparently lost most of that critical thinking you once had. Such a shame." The calm tone used here seems to throw Luca off significantly, however it is what is said that seems to do so the most.

The tiny creature does look to Alva after this, his expression softening slightly and his ears lowering to match. Truth be told, Alva does not mind sitting this particular conversation out, however he would indeed have plenty to say if given the opportunity to do so. Such a thing may be granted judging from Luca's stance shifting slightly to one less aggressive and his fairy remaining quiet for the time being. Perhaps Luca can bite his tongue a little better than expected after all.

Seeing as both other parties have now decided to offer a window to speak, Alva shifts his attention to his former coworker as the other beast seems to make the finishing touches on the current set of food provided for everyone. The cake in the middle most certainly pieces together the remaining assumptions he had as to why Herman chose tonight. Regardless, he has other things to address right now.

"I would not call it neglect in this case. Luca has done plenty in other ways and continues to try his best to learn what he can without prying too much. It goes without saying that I do not share as much about myself as I used to." The scarring around his neck, at his face, and down part of his torso all attest to the reasoning for that. Luca understands this and tries to allow Alva some space while still studying the large beast as best one can. More could be done and Alva supposes he could simply tell anything and everything about himself, but…there are many things he never thinks to speak of.

"Oh? You say that as if you were an open book back then. We found out everything we did through trial and error seeing as you did not know quite a bit about yourself. I imagine Luca does the same now at the very least, does he not?" Somewhat. There are roundabout ways in which things tend to be asked about or discovered as of late. Alva supposes they should take some time to sit down and really prod about one another…such a thing simply never really came to mind. They generally know what they need to about one another.

Alva nods faintly to this, humming as he does so. "In a way, yes. I at the very least know what I do and do not like as opposed to before where I did not understand modern food or how each thing may taste. Scents, activities, and various other modern conveniences are easier to decide and gauge now that I have experienced so many of them. Even so, most of that is not relevant here and thus does not come up in conversation." Only recently does he have access to various ingredients on a regular basis and, along with that, some useless things have also been sent. The burner Ada gave him is used often even if it serves no true purpose beyond relaxation.

Still, with all of that in mind, Luca will sometimes bring up things he has never experienced or even thought of prior. Alva draws from what he knows to pass judgment on what he does not, however it is still a difficult process for him. He prefers to keep things simple and understood when it comes to his home and personal actions. His research is unpredictable and sometimes beyond his assumption, but everything at home…he wishes to keep that well within his known realm. This is why he keeps to routines and remains limited in what he does in his own time.

"I see, I see. Well, at the very least, we both know you like everything on this tray and I'd say it is best we start eating before it gets too cold, hm? I will go get Victor and allow our dear birthday boy to start eating so the rest of us can follow." Herman waves his hand over the tray in question, once again appearing very much pleased with himself over his work. There is more than what is shown here, however desserts can be kept cold which means they are not required to eat under any timeframe. The cake is included in this even if it was placed down with things such as pancakes, steak, and eggs.

Luca stands right back up again, sputtering as he does so and struggling to decide whether or not to look to his father or Alva. "Wh-What?! Birthday?! I-I didn't even think you had a concept of that! Don't you guys live way too long for that sort of thing?!" Hm…sort of, yes. This was touched on by Frederick and Mary when the two sat down with Alva and discussed what happened, but Alva supposes Luca may very well have overlooked that part. With everything else going on at the time, such a thing is understandable.

The other beast raises a brow, his arms crossing as he turns back around. It seems he will have to fetch Victor after this. "You really did forget most of what I taught you, huh? I told you all of this back then and the same remains true now. No matter how long one's lifespan may be, no matter how many years have passed, and no matter how likely it is many more will follow, life is to be treasured." Hm…Alva wonders in this case if birthdays may very well have been a rare time where Herman was consistently able to show up to be with Luca. Truthfully, he did not believe his former housemate still held such ideals.

Herman continues on briefly, waving his hand slightly as he does so. "Just like how your sort celebrate each year, and much more so every five or ten, we celebrate each one as well. An immortal lifespan does not guarantee a long life and fairies of all creatures will understand this. Thus, celebration is customary for our kind." For modern ones. Alva, as Luca assumed, did not have a concept of such a thing even if his parents are very much of the same mind that each year that passes is to be cherished.

It was not until much later into their stay at the city that his father and mother were first exposed to the concept of celebrating each year of life. In the old world, the passage of time is marked by the rise and fall of celestial bodies as well as the seasons shifting. Individual days, weeks, months, or years are all meaningless when one must focus solely on where prey is migrating to. Seasons are noted and prepared for, of course, as prey will roam to higher or lower elevations depending on the growth of vegetation. While snow was a constant back at his old home similarly to here, the winters were much harsher and pushed even his kind to the limits of their cold resistance. Cold cannot directly kill, but it can open a chance for something else to finish the job. It can also kill young, immature wolves…that and starvation are the most dangerous early on.

Upon hearing of this custom, Alva remembers his parents looking positively thrilled. While his date of birth is unknown just as theirs is, a general idea can be gathered based on the phase of the moon and the season when it happened. Somewhere in the middle of winter after a full moon…that is all they know. Because of this, his birthday was chosen by a rough estimation given by Herman with approval from his mother and father. Those two, likewise, were given their own estimates based on what they knew. Both of them were quite eager to catch up on lost birthdays even if, as expected, none present know the exact age of the other.

Alva's age can be very roughly estimated whereas his parents…not so much. Herman is slightly younger judging from maturation dates for the both of them, so this did aid in choosing what day may have been the one he was born on. When he arrived to the city, he had been fully matured for a short amount of time whereas Herman was very recently so. The two are very close in age by their standards as a result. This did help more accurately figure out when Alva was born, too, even if it is still a guess in the end.

Luca snaps the large beast's thoughts back to his current time quickly enough by startling again and looking toward Alva with quite the guilty expression. "I-I had no idea! I…I never thought you'd celebrate something like that…" Which, of course, leads to another wave of guilt over such an assumption being made which led to never asking for information on that topic. Truth be told, Luca was correct in that he no longer celebrated even if others may do so or insist on such. "I'm sorry, Alva…"

Naturally, the large beast in question shakes his head faintly to brush this aside. "I have not celebrated it since leaving my prior home. I lost track of exact dates long ago and felt no need to keep track of them. Much like the old world, there is no sense in managing weeks or months when out here in the wilderness." That said, he can of course tell how much time has passed since significant events based on the rise and fall of the moon. It is a little more difficult during periods of constant light or darkness, however it is then managed by his usual sleeping schedule. He does still have a clock, after all, even if it is technically obsolete.

Herman nods along with this, sighing as he does so. "I figured as much. Out here, it is certainly more difficult, but gratefully Ada keeps a calendar and we do have Emil learning to keep track of dates. Emil has no birthday either, so he got to choose his own as a little project for himself." And, if Alva had to guess, it is likely Emil chose the same birthday as Ada. He cannot blame the young male, of course, as he would no doubt do the same if he were immensely attached to someone and had no idea of when he was born. Emil may not even recall the season in that region…some are difficult to figure out.

"On top of that, it marks a date close to the night your life nearly ended which most certainly isn't worth celebrating." That is the other reason. Even if his conscious mind does not recall the exact date, his body most certainly does and tends to plague him with phantom pains or nightmares around that time. Luca's companionship has helped, but…it still happens all the same.

Luca's memory seems to click at this moment, his face twisting to something between rage and pity. Ultimately, the tiny thing settles on sorrow. "Frederick did mention that…I'm so sorry, Alva…" His little fairy turns toward Herman after this, once again baring his teeth. "And I'm sorry that he keeps dredging that memory up. Why would you come over here and celebrate something like that? That's disgusting." Under normal circumstances, he supposes some may assume so.

Naturally, Herman does speak up promptly this time. "It is more disgusting to pretend it never happened at all. I could certainly act as if I never betrayed Alva's trust in me and nearly tore out his throat before sending the others after him, but that doesn't change the fact that I did." Which, naturally, they both have acknowledged for some time now. So much as Alva wishes he could ignore his former coworker's existence altogether, he simply cannot. Coming to terms with all of that is, in a way, easier than mulling over what he could have done wrong all those years ago.

"It would be much easier to pretend I never raked my claws over his face then down his belly and it would certainly be easier to act as if I didn't look upon him with disgust alongside his courtship partner as our 'friends' tried to tear him apart. Both of us would like to pretend it never happened, yet doing so would be a bigger disgrace than addressing it as it comes." Which Herman tried to do the very night they reunited yet…Alva refused. He did not wish to hear any of it at the time. He did not want to know why he was betrayed or whether or not anything he once knew was ever genuine. At that time, he…he wished it would all simply leave him be.

Unfortunately, as of late, he understands this is a necessary part of his life now. Even without the alliance with Ada partially relying on this, it would set him back significantly with his own personal life if he did not attempt to work through what happened back then. While he has still not discussed the intricacies of how or why everything happened, his assumptions seem to have been correct thus far and Herman would all too gladly share everything if he wished to hear it. He will at some point, simply not yet. Currently, he prefers to go through all of this one visit at a time.

Somehow, Luca remains quiet long enough for Alva to speak up first this time and further cement this point for the tiny fairy. "I imagine for fairies that it is proper to ignore problems or overlook them due to how little time one has. Burning bridges or ignoring blaring issues is faster and easier than working through them. Reconciliation is a natural part of our species…truth be told, I have been slowing it considerably." Forgiveness and communication is vital to the success of a family. Usually, things would be discussed until a conclusion is reached…he simply does not wish to handle it all in one go. This hurts enough as it is.

"Ignoring the problem would be akin to admitting there was never one to begin with. There is a time and a place to discuss or bring up matters such as these and, regrettably, this time is inevitable." It would be in the back of their minds regardless of it being spoken, yet speaking it reassures the other party that this issue is known and taken into account. There is no wound to reopen and no need to remain silent when this is all just between the two of them…or, well, three with Luca around.

Everything that has been spoken…it is all already in Alva's mind to begin with. He recalls it all vividly and he does not need to be 'reminded' of it or, conversely, have it hidden from him. Both of them know it happened, both of them have acknowledged it, and now they will either discuss it further or let the topic drop in favor of something else. It is a test in some ways to see if one is ready to tread further. Does he ask for further details? Is it really necessary to figure out more? Things such as that.

For Herman, it is as pondered prior as well as a show of accountability in a sense. The other beast is not trying to sugarcoat what happened, so to speak, or 'make up' for it by offering food. He is trying to rekindle a friendship yet points out bluntly that he understands this is, to some, in poor taste. Offering a celebration so close to the anniversary of an attempted murder is nothing short of revolting. Alva imagines that Ada was never told this particular part or else she no doubt would have barred the other male from trying any of this at all.

In this particular instance, for Alva, it is a logical step to take. While he does not welcome any of this by any means, in fact he would have declined any of this if told of its planning, he is also not oblivious to why it is done. It was once a tradition and attempting to restart it is a natural step to take. Alva will not return the favor and he will not thank the other beast for any of this, however he will accept the token gesture all the same. It is a small, pitiable offering that will do nothing to sway him now yet may give him something to consider somewhere years from now.

At the very least, this is an excuse to visit Alva as well as Luca to not only check up on progress made but also attempt to gain ground in rebuilding part of what was lost…or, at the very least, not lose any further ground. Visitation is rare and only done by necessity from Emil or Ada, meaning events such as this will be all Herman has to try to vaguely justify his intrusions. If not for Luca's medical emergency, it is likely the two would not have met again between the last babysitting job. After this, one can only guess when the two may encounter one another again.

"There is no sense in delving deeper this time, however it is best to address it all the same so as to not appear akin to a child attempting to hide a broken vase under a rug. It would be in poor taste to ignore the obvious problem with this sort of behavior." Alva nods faintly to himself as he finishes what he has to say here, noting Luca appears to take all of this in yet is not quite so convinced. It is fine, such a thing must be difficult to grasp, but it is how his sort work. Alva's refusal to acknowledge it all when the two first reunited was considered to be rude, in all honesty.

His former coworker chuckles at the analogy, however the other creature chooses to begin his walk downstairs as opposed to harp on it further. Alva is certain much more would be said under normal circumstances, however Victor does need to be brought up so the group can eat before everything goes cold. Magic plates only retain heat in the food set upon them for so long, after all, and-- hm?

Luca nudges his side against Alva's jaw the moment the other beast leaves the room, uttering a small huffing sound as he does so. After this, however, the tiny thing moves to gently pet the skin he so brashly prodded. "You tolerate too much for your own good, Alva…" A light kiss is given to the large beast, as is often the case. "You have the strength to eliminate anyone here you want and yet you try to play nice instead no matter how much it hurts you. Why not just tell him to leave? He has to listen to you anyway…you don't benefit from this at all."

Seeing as their time alone will be rather brief, the pup only spends a short amount of time outside after waking, Alva raises his hand to gently pet his fairy then verbally respond with very little pause. "Throwing one's weight around causes only problems in the end. Had I decided to take that approach, I would have made enemies with Frederick and Mary." The latter of which is weaker than him due to her age, however the former is stronger due to being a dragon. Most ancient dragon species will outclass anything else around them, much like Alva does in this forest.

"In this case, it is much more complicated. The lycan in question is weaker, yes, and he has no ties to anyone of significance that I am aware of, but…it is better to work with others in this world than it is to make enemies. Emil and Ada would be set back significantly if I destroyed their errand runner and babysitter." And he would lose favor with them perhaps entirely. While Alva has no intention of becoming close to others beyond Luca, it is foolish to needlessly burn bridges. Someday, he or Luca may be in need of help. Had he not maintained his relationship, Luca…he may never have recovered.

"If I sour whatever connection we all have or reject further instances to deepen it, we very well may end up in a dire situation someday without anyone around to aid us. For me, this is much less of a problem. For you…" Well, he does not need to say it. Luca pieces this together and begrudgingly nods along with it. Alva feels amused that he of all beasts has to explain this to Luca, the one whom so has pushed him to branch out to begin with, however he understands in the end why his fairy is so against this particular instance. Alva would be too, but…well, he has gone over that before. It is not simple.

Alva lightly nudges Luca with his index finger after speaking, huffing a small laugh at the tiny thing's sounds made in response. "Lastly, I know better than anyone to make enemies of my own kind." Especially that one. In the old world, it would have simply been avoid contact, kill, or be killed. Now…now it is required that everyone work together regardless of the old rules that dictated nature. "We benefit from this in that we get to live without concern of being attacked by other strong creatures. This is also why I ignored the northern group until I no longer was able to." Avoiding confrontation is, overall, the best strategy for a creature that relies on its body to move in order to eat.

If he kills someone of decent value in this modern world, especially another high-tier predator, that someone may very well have allies. If it does, he can expect retaliation somewhere down the line in some form or another. Failing to finish the job would also be a horrible mistake. Herman rightfully feared for his life that night upon seeing Alva still alive before him. He should have finished the job…he should have ended it all right then and there. Still, it is a good thing in the end that he did not. Luca may not be stable now if he had done so and Ada may have very well fled to protect Emil.

Though clearly frustrated, Luca does nod faintly to agree with this. Again, his fairy knows plenty about how alliances work and the importance of compromise, it is simply this particular creature that Luca does not wish to see the benefit in interacting with. Luca knows all of this, he must given how obvious it is. Getting along even with those one despises is necessary in a modern setting…ah…but Alva is grateful in many ways that his surrounding creatures are few in number and pleasant overall in personality. It is easy here. Peaceful.

Unlike a truly city-like setting, Alva can generally avoid interaction if he wishes and request to be left alone if he so desires. The northern group rarely visits him unless it is to allow the fairies to do so or to offer brief interactions and his former coworker generally stays away minus a few instances here or there. While initially all of this was stressful and overwhelming, he feels it has become much easier as of late. He understands everyone much better now which helps greatly in dealing with each individual. It is all very limited as well which further eases him. All of this is fine…it is pleasant.

Luca grumbles a little further, however he chooses to instead nuzzle up against Alva's jaw a bit longer until, upon hearing footsteps on the stairs, backing away to return to where he was seated prior. As expected, the tiny fairy's behavior is subdued while his father is around. Victor will be here too and further this notion, of course. It is best to remain polite while the pup is around.

Herman returns swiftly enough and this time climbs up onto the bed in order to sit across from Alva at this makeshift table of sorts. He is quite chatty, as always, which is good for the pup overall. Victor will likely struggle to sound out this modern language for quite awhile, however he can still pick up words and begin to understand it just as most any common pup would be able to do. Naturally, lycans are much smarter than their common animal counterparts which means Victor should be able to roughly sound out ancient tongue in limited capacity at any point. Understanding other words will be a slow yet steady process. Gestures are easier for pups to understand given their species' reliance on body language.

Even so, speaking around the pup as one would any other creature is essential to helping Victor grasp basic language. He no doubt understands routines regarding dinner and likely several words associated with it, he simply will be unable to speak such things in a modern tongue for quite some time. By now, it is likely that Victor understands when Herman begins his disclaimers on things that normally should not be done. Eating in bed is usually frowned upon, however special exceptions can be made.

This seems to be Victor's first experience with a birthday celebration and, though subdued, it is still no doubt exciting. The tiny thing is very curious and will wander around endlessly as of late when allowed into Alva's home. Ah…well, not endlessly exactly as the pup still tires out swiftly. All the new sights, scents, and sounds are incredibly fascinating to such a young creature which is part of why Victor slept so heavily earlier he is sure. He likely wandered about for hours until succumbing to sleep. Now, with food being shown, he will curiously wander around the edges of the table yet politely refrain from jumping onto it or taking anything and everything he sees. Manners are important and it is likely this has been a firm teaching from the start. Stealing food from others can result in hefty punishments in the real world, after all.

Whereas before the tiny pup would waddle over Alva's lap even as he drank or ate, Victor noticeably keeps his distance this time and tries to avoid getting too close to Alva during their meal. Food aggression is common in nature and it is likely the pup knows now to be wary of such things. It still stumbles and crawls over Herman's crossed legs, however that is a family member versus a stranger and thus it can be considered acceptable. It seems Victor knows the difference by now even if he is still very happy to see Alva.

So far as Luca is concerned, Victor does notice and acknowledge the fairy yet Alva cannot say what the pup thinks of him. Luca is prey in every sense which is a bad combination with the fact puppies are known for trying to eat anything and everything while discovering what can or cannot be consumed. Still, it is likely Victor also understands to a point that the fairies he knows are interacted with like other creatures. There will be knowledge not to harm them, but…well, pups are not the best at knowing their own strength.

Breakfast is calm overall. Because Victor is now present, manners are adhered to and everyone including the fairy and his father behave around one another in order to ensure the pup is not taught any poor habits. It is especially important to show just how gently Luca is handled and interacted with so as to ensure Victor comprehends that the tiny thing is most certainly not as durable as another lycan. The pup should be capable of picking up the fact Luca has some wolf scent, however…well, the fairy looks and mostly is still prey in the end. One must be cautious in this case.

Luca eats off of Alva's plate as he usually does for ease as well as to keep the tiny thing safe from the curious pup nearby. Victor will also be able to note from Alva's behavior that, as with specific other fairies thus far, Luca is not intended to be eaten. The pup does gently accept food from the two nearby, even a few small tastes of sweets that are not exactly good for one so young to partake in, yet clearly favors his usual guardian in this aspect. There appears to be a slight caution around Alva even if it is not outright fear. By now, it is likely due to understanding one should not blindly trust others…that said, Victor looks to his guardian and swiftly understands Alva is trustworthy due to behavior seen between the two adult wolves.

Conversation is pleasant enough and tends to be frivolous in nature at the start. Questions regarding how Luca is fairing, how hunting has gone, and if there have been any intruders as of late are all common questions akin to how those in the city would ask about the weather or any offspring updates. It sounds as if Emil and Ada have had occasional issues with challengers, however it has been nothing too difficult for Emil or Herman to handle thus far. Even so, it has that group on edge for now and patrols have increased to compensate. Regrettably, it is likely Ada's job is to blame here.

Once simpler topics are covered, things do begin to delve deeper. It is natural in a typical conversation and even Alva knows this…it…it is simply difficult to endure at times. All of it brings back memories of long ago. He does not let such things cloud his judgment or alter his expressions, however he can tell Luca picks up on it due to his fairy's quirks. No one is to blame for it, it is merely something he needs to work through. He could refuse any and all of this interaction if he so wished, it is simply better if he does not do so.

Despite his own personal issues, Alva supposes all of this is pleasant in a way. Seeing Victor slowly but surely grow is a pleasant feeling even if the pup is not related to him in any form. The little one offers hope to his species and, in the end, it relieves him to know there is at least one new life brought into this world to help fight for his species' survival. He always thought for years now that he would never personally meet another of his own kind…now he has been able to see a pup for the first time. Victor's presence helps lift his mood a bit further, he would say.

The food is all wonderful, as expected, and most is of course consumed by the two large beasts present while Luca eats his fill and Victor is allowed tastes of most things yet full helpings of only simple food such as meat or eggs. The unnatural food consumption does mean they will have to brush the pup's teeth later to prevent issues, however it is a small price to pay in the end. Victor is pleased and it is good for him to try so many different flavors early on so as to prevent pickiness in the future.

Luca does wish to go near Victor, however Alva believes it is best to do so without food nearby and to allow everything to calm down first. The group heads downstairs to allow the pup to wander again under Alva's supervision while Herman handles the dishes. Both are quite active jobs, he would say, though he of course takes great pleasure in observing the behavior of a young pup. It is all within what he expected, yet…well, it is still surreal to see personally. They will all go out on patrol tonight, too, so he will get to observe much more once clothing is exchanged and dishes are done…or, well, after another deviation as well.

"Ah, yes, I nearly forgot." Herman clicks his tongue as he finishes drying his hands, his attention shifting to Alva soon after. The larger male is seated in the main room while Victor, ever the curious one, is poking around the couches. They likely still smell of his mother which may very well play some part in this behavior, too. "I have some gifts to deliver to you from Emil and Ada alongside my own, but I left them at home during my rush to leave before you woke up." Which, in the end, was not even a concern in the slightest. There was no way for Herman to know this, however, given it is unusual behavior from Alva to say the least.

"I will go get those if you would like to start your routine without me for a little while. It won't take too terribly long, you know I would hate to miss some precious time together, but you know it is quite a ways away." Herman chuckles at the mildly disgusted expression Luca makes while Victor is otherwise occupied and thus will not be at risk of seeing it. The other lycan moves toward Alva after fetching his coat, initially making the larger beast assume he wishes to go about that usual goodbye ritual the two got into the habit of so long ago. It is not exactly impolite, but it is much friendlier than what most would do.

Perhaps out of concern for Victor only seeing such intimate farewells as opposed to normal ones or perhaps there is some semblance of pity for the fact Luca would be forced to merely allow it to happen, Herman decides against it. Instead, he offers a standard one in the form of a brief nudge on the cheek with his nose then a wave as he turns to get his boots on. Luca is no doubt still furious over this, however nothing can be done or said right now.

Seeing as this is usually Victor's cue to leave, the tiny pup scurries over to his guardian in preparation for their return trip home. This time, however, Herman merely pets the fluffy creature then nods to Alva. "My dear friend will be taking care of you for a few minutes, alright? I will be back soon enough, don't you worry, Victor." It is unlikely the pup understands most of what is said, however he does become mildly distressed when Herman stands up without lifting the tiny pup.

"I will leave his next dedicated feeding and the playtime during your outing to you, Alva. It will be good practice for later on, hm?" The other adult wolf gives a wink, chuckling soon after he does so. Ah…well, Alva supposes he should be fine. He understands in theory what to do, yet…well, trying such things in the field, so to speak, is not always so kind. "He is an easy one unlike a certain other child I remember raising. Just do what you were taught and what you have helped me with." That is fair enough.

Luca squawks at this and would no doubt have argued if not for the fact Alva speaks up beforehand. "I have no concerns over my level of care, merely that he will become restless without his guardian." Which is already apparent in how nervous the poor thing appears now that Herman's attention is on Alva rather than Victor despite the clear intent to leave. All pups must eventually learn to be without their parents at various times, but…it feels a little early. That said, modern wolves handle things differently.

"That is something we all end up having to get used to, I'm afraid. It prevents becoming too reliant on constant attention and such, hm? Since we do not regularly leave him home alone in order to hunt as your sort would, we have to simulate it in a few different ways. He also needs to get used to others unlike with your kind." Herman nods along with his own reasoning, adjusting his coat a bit further now that his boots are strapped and ready for the journey ahead. The other may very well just change forms anyway, truth be told. "In this case, we don't want him to be entirely alone. Being with you will get some of our goals met."

Hm…that does make sense. Alva would regularly be left alone deep within his den until his parents were able to return and feed him. His only job then was to hunker down and stay quiet so as to avoid being detected by anything nearby. Victor being around his parents all the time due to caution that has resulted from unnatural settings, namely Ada's work, would indeed perhaps cause him to rely too much on his parents' presence. Herman can help in between, however he is still essentially another parent to the pup.

Independence as well as acceptance of other creatures is vital, unlike when Alva was growing up, which means allowing Victor to be handled and briefly cared for by another party is important on occasion. That said, the amount of trust being granted to him at this time…he truly cannot comprehend it. While he is certainly the best choice for protection, it…it is astounding the parents trust him enough to allow him to care for their child.

With that in mind, even if it is clear Herman initially intends to leave without saying a full goodbye to Victor, it seems the pup is ultimately able to scurry over and shift the adult lycan's attention. He gives a small sigh at the infant's whimpering and smiles as he lifts the tiny creature even if it appeared as if he wished to leave without doing so. As with Alva, he nudges the tiny creature prior to walking Victor over to Alva then offering the puppy over.

"I will be back soon enough, so don't miss me too much, hm? I promise you that no matter what happens I will never leave you behind." Herman's eyes noticeably shift from looking down at Victor to up at the one holding him no matter how subtle a movement it is. Such words cause a mixture of pleasant and unpleasant sensations that are impossible to put into words.

Though Herman leaves the home in seemingly high spirits due to being granted polite farewells from not only Alva but Luca as well, there is a sense of uncertainty gnawing at the larger of the two beasts. While Victor appears calmer compared to before and settles into Alva's arms relatively painlessly, Alva is uncertain if his own feelings quite match those of the others around him. Such a thing is expected by now, he supposes.

Luca is of course pleased to finally be somewhat alone with his companion and would gladly never see the other lycan ever again whereas Victor clearly would prefer to see his guardian again sooner rather than later. As for Alva…he is uncertain where he lands anymore. There were times at various points in his life where either one of these would be similar to his own thoughts. Now? Now it is much harder to say.

At the very least, he now has Luca to rely on which eases things significantly as the door closes and near silence takes the room. Alva's eyes drift down to Victor, one which blindly trusts him out of necessity, and then to Luca, one which has gone through countless trials to build the bond now shared between them. That protective instinct of his will be in full force tonight, it seems. For now, he should check to see if Victor is willing to feed before their outing begins.

…Ah…still, even so, Alva would be lying if he said that farewell is not still echoing through his mind even as his focus shifts to tending to the pup now put under his care. It is best not to think about it. Just focus on the task before him. Any slip-ups now will result in Victor becoming upset not only because his guardian is gone but because his current one is also expressing uncertainty--?

While the pup's focus is on the now closed front door, Luca takes the chance to sneak in a small kiss to the corner of Alva's jaw prior to gently stroking it as he so often does. His tone is quiet, soothing, and does not seem to pull Victor's attention in the slightest. "Don't think about him, Alva, just focus on me-- on us. We get a little time alone on your birthday now, right? Let's make the most of it. You can teach me how to take care of Victor." The pup does immediately turn his head upon hearing his name, to which Luca steps closer to the center of Alva's shoulder and utters a small laugh. Yes…he supposes that is true.

The large beast utters an affirmative sound as he gently adjusts his hold on Victor and moves toward the kitchen. His former coworker always brings plenty of Ada's milk along so as to ensure Victor will not run out, so feeding the pup will be no trouble at all. He supposes this will be the first time Luca has ever seen it. It will calm Victor down significantly as well seeing as the pup knows this routine and is already focused on food rather than his missing guardian.

As Victor's attention moves elsewhere, Luca takes that chance to scoot closer once again and offer one more kiss to Alva's jaw. His voice is scarcely even a whisper this time seeing as he is settled so close to the large beast's ear, allowing him to almost simply mouth the words. There is very little sound involved, meaning Alva knows Victor's still developing ears fail to pick up on anything said.

"I love you, Alva…happy birthday. I'll give you my present two nights from now." Luca grasps gently at Alva's jaw, trailing his tongue over the warm skin beside him soon after.
