Chapter Text
After everyone had left, Hanzawa and Saeko sat opposite Hiyakawa in the living room. It wasn't often that he stayed the night, but when he did they usually asked him about things like work and how his relationship with Mikado was going. If he had to guess from the way the two of them were staring at him now, they wanted to know more about what happened during the work trip.
“So, Rihito...” It was Saeko that spoke first, her hands folded neatly on her lap. “How did you do it?”
“Do... what?”
“Propose to Mikado,” Hanzawa stated with a soft tone.
“Ah... well, I just got him back from the... kidnapper and sort of... put it on his finger.”
The two of them stared, seemingly waiting for more, but Hiyakawa wasn't sure what to say. Hanzawa wouldn't believe what had actually happened and he was sure if Saeko did believe it would become problematic for the two of them. Saying he did it to fight back against the spirits-- to “fight with love,” and save Mikado's life, likely wouldn't be an answer they wanted to hear. When they blinked at him, he squirmed.
“...That's it? I thought you had a whole thing you wanted to do? Y'know, nice nature hike and all that.”
“Hiroki...” Saeko warned, giving him a stern gaze.
“Yes, well... a lot happened that wasn't expected so... I changed my mind.”
Hanzawa hummed, leaning back into his chair while Saeko gave Hiyakawa a gentle smile.
“I'm sure Mikado loved it either way. The two of you were already engaged so this was more of a formality anyway, since Mikado said he wanted rings, right?”
Hiyakawa nodded slowly. He had watched various types of proposals in preparation for the trip. Some of them seemed like more of a hassle than others, but all of them ended in excitement with the couples kissing and hugging. It wasn't as though he expected the same outcome. Mikado wasn't exactly the “jump into your arms” excited type. Well. He did tend to lean directly into Hiyakawa whenever he was scared, but that was a different matter entirely.
“I've been wonderin' this for a while, but... where's your ring?” Hanzawa questioned, eyeing his bandaged up right hand. “Guess if your hand's all swollen you wouldn't be able to wear it, though.”
“Kousuke said... he wanted me to give him my ring so he can give it to me when he's ready.”
“Mikado's a good kid. I'm glad the two of you found each other,” Hanzawa murmured, more to himself than Hiyakawa.
And although Hiyakawa wanted to correct Hanzawa, he remained quiet. He was glad he found Mikado, too. And that, despite everything, Mikado chose to stay by his side from that moment forward.
