What You Think Of Me?

Chapter 26: Unlucky

Chapter Text

Unlucky

Light is so tired.

Why is he so tired? Where should he even start?

First a serial killer started killing criminals all around the world with supernatural abilities. Then Light was suspected of being said killer by the best detective in the world. Then he had to prove his own innocence to that detective only to instead fall in love with him after months of psychological torture getting a bad case of stockholm syndrome. And instead of his feelings being reciprocated, L only saw him as a suspect and a killer even if he was innocent. He never meant more to him than that and maybe someone to let some steam off. And then when he was finally freed of suspicion and let go he went and met the real Kira and started dating him unaware of Taro, his new boyfriend, being the actual Kira. And after realizing his new boyfriend is Kira he then met the being who gave him those powers, an actual Shinigami that is now using Light as his new form of entertainment with the threat of killing him if he gets too boring.

So yeah, he is tired.

Maybe he should consider taking a year off school and cases. Maybe travel around the world, take Sayu with him and forget about everything for a while. But that would put a tamper on his plans. He wanted to graduate on time and then start working as soon as possible. Besides, he knows he won’t be able to stay away from cases and school/work for long. He needs the stimulation those bring to his mind.

And he can’t rest right now, even if he wants to. Not as long as Kira is free and is killing people. By now, he knows for sure Taro is Kira, but he doesn’t have any proof with the exception of the annoying Shinigami that not only follows Taro, but now also follows him around just to annoy him.

But he can’t use Ryuk as proof, he doesn’t even know how to make others see him, Ryuk never mentioned that and Light won’t bother asking, knowing the Shinigami won’t say anything to him besides anything he could say to annoy him. So he has no way of proving Taro is Kira. That means he has to find out for himself, get him to confess, find some sort of clue, something incriminating, anything. And he has to do it before Taro dies in a few months unless he wants to die with him, killed by the Shinigami that follows both of them.

Light feels disturbed by the idea of Taro dying soon, despite everything. He wishes he never was told about that, then catching him wouldn’t leave such a bad taste in his mouth. Taro may as well be a walking corpse, but Light still needs to prove his guilt.

Right now, his best bet to catch him is to make Taro confess to him. He needs to act like a faithful Kira follower so Taro invites him to join him and confess everything. Maybe then he would actually explain to Light how he kills since Ryuk didn’t want to tell him. He just knows Ryuk gave him his powers to kill but not what those powers entail. Once he knows how he kills then he can make a plan around it. He can catch him before he kills anyone else.

So far, Light thinks he is making good progress with Taro. Acting like the devoted kira follower and loving boyfriend is making Taro trust him more than he should, which works for Light. He hates acting like either of those things but it’s for the greater good so he has to swallow his pride and disgust and kiss Taro whenever the man insists on it.

Like right now that Light is letting Taro kiss him in Taro’s own room, which only makes this whole thing even worse. Not only were they technically in a private setting, leaving Light in a more vulnerable position, but also Light is sure Taro’s room is filled with cameras from the Kira Task Force. He is probably being watched not only by L and the rest of the task Force, but also by his own father. His own father who is not the most supportive on gay rights and with whom Light hasn’t been on the best of terms since their fight a couple of weeks ago.

It’s been a little over a week since Light started his plan and so far Taro has not confessed and Light is starting to think he should change strategies.

Ryuk is definitely not helping, not only watching them make out on Taro’s bed (which is definitely creepy), but also laughing at them in the corner of the room. This proves that Taro is already used to him from all the time he has known him since he became Kira, because besides the initial annoyed glare he threw him when Light and Taro met in the park in fron of his house, he hasn’t made any other indication of the Shinigami being there. Light, however, has been having a harder time pretending they’re alone. Right now, in this room, they’re the farthest thing from alone. With Ryuk and the Task Force watching them, Light feels he is about to explode from embarassment. He, at least, hasn’t let Taro push the kiss further, because Light is definitely drawing the line at fucking Taro, with or without an audience.

“Hehe, Taro-kun, Taro-kun.” Ryuk laughed, but Taro continued to ignore him. Light had to try so hard to not look in his direction. “Your boyfriend seems shy. Do you think he is a virgin?”

Taro pulled away from the kiss with a frown, but didn’t look at Ryuk.

“Is everything alright?” Light asked nervously.

Taro shook his head and smiled at him softly, the frown completely leaving his face. “No, I’m fine. I was just thinking…” he paused, looking somewhat nervous. Light waited expectantly, surely he wouldn't confess right now right here, right? “Are you a virgin?”

Light made a mixture of a gasp and a noise at the back of his throat that only made him choke on his own spit, making him cough uncontrollably.

“Hehe. Seems like he isn’t.” Ryuk said, which only made Light blush deeper and cough even more.

When he controlled his coughs he looked up at Taro who was glaring at the floor between them and Ryuk, though not directly at the Shinigami. “I… Taro, I-”

Taro looked at him with a frown. “I don’t care if you’re or not.” He said. “Because I love you, Light.” Light gasped again, this time managing to not choke on air. “And I want to be with you in every way that I can, if only you’d let me…” Taro looked at him with bright expectant eyes that in any other circumstances Light would have considered almost cute.

He stared at Light expectantly as Ryuk laughed harder. Light was completely red and the disgust was crawling all over him like a vice, almost choking him. “Taro, I…” He can’t agree to this, he can’t . He has to think of an excuse. Quickly . “I- I…” He winced. His mind was blank. “I just…” He looked around the room, looking almost pleadingly at Ryuk, who was laughing his ass off, briefly before looking for another way out. His father can’t see this, Light would rather die than do this with Taro with him and the rest of the Task Force watching. Wait, that’s it! L! “Taro, I…” He winced again, hating what he was about to say but it’s the only way he could find to get out of this without ruining all the progress he has made with Taro. “I just went over a bad relationship. You know that…” He mumbled, looking away. Fuck, he hated this. Especially since he knows L is watching this. “We… he…” He pursed his lips, grimacing. “He was just using me for… that .” Taro pulled away slightly with a comprehensive frown. “I don’t… I can’t… I’m not ready to do that kind of thing again… we just… we have been dating for only a few weeks, I… Taro, you know I like you.” Light lied as he stared at Taro almost pleadingly, trying to convince him to avoid the subject. “But I just… I’m not ready to let myself be vulnerable with someone else like that again, not yet.” He said, and in a way was true, but he had other reasons to refuse Taro, many other reasons.

“Light… I… I get it.” Taro sighed, not looking pleased at all. “I can wait for as long as you need.” That would be forever. “But don’t forget I love you and I would never use you like that.”

“Hah! Maybe he would let Kira fuck him.” Ryuk said, and Light really had to control himself to not turn to glare at the Shinigami. Taro’s eyes widened, an idea crossing his eyes and Light felt even more dread than before. Ryuk was ruining his excuse! And even after he had to humiliate himself in front of the Task Force! He has never wanted to kill someone as much as he wants to kill the Shinigami right now.

Taro smirked widely. “Don’t worry, Light. I can wait for you to be ready. But you’re strong, Light. And I know you can get over that asshole who broke your heart soon.” He said.

Light grimaced, but nodded. “Thanks for understanding…”

Taro left the topic change after that, a self satisfied smirk on his face the entire time. Ryuk continued laughing as he watched Light with an amused smirk and Light tried to hold his vomit down the whole time. He knows what’s coming soon and he is not sure what to do about it. He is not ready for this yet, he still hasn’t found any concrete evidence.

Ryuk continued to make fun of him on his way home as Light tried really hard to ignore him. “Seems you’re running out of time, Light-o!” He joked.

Light glared at him, not caring who was watching him shout at the empty air. “Shut up, Ryuk!” He growled and continued his way home as Ryuk laughed loudly.

L watched the TV screen, glaring at Kagami looking so satisfied after making out with Light. How dare he touch Light in such a way? Especially since it’s clear Light doesn’t want to be touched like that by him. Light looked clearly uncomfortable with the whole thing and it was only because of the case that he hadn't yet gone to Kagami and punched him in the face.

He is not sure if Light is so uncomfortable with Kagami because he is a Kira suspect or because of the reason he gave the other man. He had also told Sayu something along the lines of not being ready for another relationship before he even agreed to date Kagami, so… is that true?

L doesn’t know what to feel about that, knowing he hurted Light so much that he hasn’t moved on. He would actually prefer Light to be uncomfortable with Kagami because he is a Kira suspect and not because of the way things ended between them. He would, at the very least, feel slightly less guilty.

But he shouldn’t care about how Light feels about him, only that he realizes Kagami is Kira. After all, he did sleep with Light at first just to let off some of the sexual tension they both had going on during the investigation. That part had been mostly true. The tension between them has been so unbearable that even L couldn't handle it anymore. He had never felt that way about anyone before, much less a suspect. So how had things ended up like this? How did he let himself start a sexual relationship with a suspect? How had he let himself start developing feelings for a former suspect? For anyone? He is L, World’s Greatest Detective. He is not supposed to feel anything for anyone. Not even for the only person who he has felt on par with.

But even if he wants to be with Light for as long as he can, he got himself into this by treating him horribly. By making him believe that their relationship actually meant nothing to him. For not seeing every sign that Light was not Kira. For pushing him away when he actually wanted him to stay.

Now he can only make sure Light is safe from afar as he watches him continue with his life away from him.

Light was nervous. He looked over and over his notes on the Kira case, trying to find something, anything, that he could use to convict Taro. But he had nothing. He considered asking L, but his pride didn’t let him. He is sure he can find something before it’s too late. Besides, he can’t tell L about Ryuk and that’s the only thing he has as proof. And if L had something else Taro would already be in jail.

He has to find how Kira kills first. Taro said it’s just one person, but who could be able to kill millions of people all around the world? How? Ryuk hasn’t wanted to tell him how Kira or Shinigami kill so he is alone on that. It has to be something that a Shinigami can give to a human. Mind powers? A weapon? If it’s mind powers then it would be even harder to prove. If it’s a weapon… how would Taro hide it from anyone and safely use it whenever he kills? It has to be something inconspicuous. Like a book…

“A notebook…” He muttered. Ryuk laughed behind him.

A notebook… hadn’t the Second Kira mentioned something about showing each other their notebooks?

“A notebook!” His eyes widened. “Ryuk!” He turned to the Shinigami. “I know how Kira kills!”

Ryuk laughed harder. “I’m impressed, kid.” He said. “Not even L found out about that on his own.”

Light frowned. “He already knows how Kira kills?” He asked.

Ryuk laughed. “He even has a Death Note himself!” He exclaimed.

Light deflated slightly. L already knew about Kira’s weapon… but then, why hasn’t he caught him yet? “How does the Death Note work?” He asked.

Ryuk snickered. “Oh, it’s quite easy to use. Just write the name of the person you want to kill on it. You have to write the correct name and think of their face for it to work. You can add the way they die or just kill them with a heart attack.” Ryuk explained.

“Why are you telling me all of this now?” Liht asked annoyed.

Ryuk shrugged. “You already know it’s a notebook. I don’t see a reason why to hide anything else about it from you.”

There was a ping from his phone and Light read the text that he just got, face blanching. “Ryuk, where… where does Taro hide his Death Note?” He asked, because surely if he had it in his room then L would have already found it.

Ryuk laughed. “Oh, I don’t know… You’ll just have to find out for yourself, Light-o!” He snickered. “But don’t worry… a little bird told me Taro-kun is planning on showing you a few things soon…”

Light grimaced. “There’s no way I’m selling my body to find Kira’s Death Note.” He said.

Ryuk shrugged with a smirk. “Then it may take you longer to catch him. But remember you don’t have much time, Light-o. Everyday that passes is one less for you and Taro-kun.”

Light sighed, standing up and hiding his Kira investigation notebooks. “I already don’t have time to make a choice.” He said defeatedly. “Are you coming?” He asked the Shinigami.

“Of course. I wouldn’t miss this for any apple in the world.” Ryuk said. “I haven’t seen any humans fucking since you left your detective boyfriend a few months ago.”

Light blushed furiously. “You saw us?!” He shouted. “And I’m not letting anything happen today!” He huffed and left the room, not caring if the Shinigami followed him or not, though, he surely will.

“Don’t worry, I didn’t tell Taro-kun about it. He would have gotten unbearable about it and it would have been such a pain. He was already so pissy about you being the whole time with L instead of with him.” Ryuk said, following him despite Light wishes.

“Shut up. I don’t want to hear a single word from you again.” Light grumbled. “Look, I’ll even buy you an apple if you shut up.”

“Deal!” Ryuk exclaimed enthusiastically.

So now he has to go to a convenience store before his ‘date’ with Taro. Well, anything to prolong having to see him.

“Are you sure, Taro?” Misa asked nervously. “I… what about the eye deal?” She asked. “I could continue to be of use to you and Light once you get him on our side!” She pleaded.

Taro rolled his eyes. “This is for your own good, Misa.” He smiled at her as she sniffed. “You were already a suspect and you went through so much. Just give me back ownership of the notebook and you can help in other ways.” He tried to convince her.

She sniffed again but nodded. “If you’re sure…”

Taro took out the notebook and she noticed the dirt under his nails, giving the place they were currently meeting she guessed he must have hidden it somewhere in these woods. “Now, give the Death Note’s ownership to me, Misa.”

She nodded. “I give the ownership of the Death Note to you, Taro.” She said and suddenly she blinked, looking around confused.

She was in some woods with her friend Taro in front of her, holding a black notebook. Why were they here? “Good. Now I have to go to my date before it gets too late. Don’t do anything stupid, Misa.” He said, turning around and leaving her behind. “Hey… now that I think about it… maybe I should use my powers to save Light before I tell him… That would make him more grateful to me…” Taro muttered, uncaring of Misa being left behind.

“Wait! Where are we?!” Misa shouted nervously.

He continued walking and she followed him with some difficulty. Her heels were not made for this floor. Sometimes she really wondered why she even befriended such an asshole like him!

Light was about to pay for the damn apples for Ryuk when someone came into the convenience store. “Hands where I can see them! This is an assault!” The man said.

Light dropped the money as he and the cashier held their hands up. Ryuk laughed hard behind him and if he didn’t know better he would have thought the Shinigami planned this. The assailant was holding a large kitchen knife and had some blood on his uncovered face. From the way his eyes were dilated, he looked like he was on some sort of drugs which only made him even more dangerous.

However, he saw the cashier push the emergency button under the counter before she raised her hands so at least the police would be coming soon enough. Just as he faintly began to hear the sirens in the distance he saw the man in front of him choke before he soon fell to the floor, dead.

Light immediately went to his side to feel for any pulse, but the man was indeed dead. Killed by a heart attack. Light turned to Ryuk who was laughing. “Don’t look at me!” He said between giggles.

Soon enough the police came and pointed their guns at him. “Freeze! You’re under arrest on suspicion of being the serial killer Kira!” The police officer shouted, looking at Light.

Really, why was he this unlucky?

“L, you may want to hear this.” Watari said over the intercom. The others listened curiously. “Light was recently arrested on suspicion of being Kira by the Kanto police.”

“What?!” Several of the men shouted in shock. Many of them turning to an equally shocked L. “You did this, Ryuzaki?!” Soichiro asked, outraged.

L shook his head. “No, I didn’t.” He stood up. “Watari. Make sure there is no camera feed in the police station Light is currently being held. And bring me the car.” He said as everyone stared at him in confusion. “I’m going to get Light out of there.” He said determinedly.

He is not sure what happened, but he knows Light is innocent. But he needs to speak with him.
