Work Text:

“Albedo… are you wearing slides?” Kaeya’s furrowed brows were apparent just by the tone in his voice, even if you couldn’t see him. He stared right outside of Albedo’s lab, pushing up the loose curtain that Albedo had recently put up at the entrance of his lab. The alchemist didn’t spare him a glance, continuing with his work as he spoke, “Yes, I am. You seem rather confused.” Albedo clearly saw no problem wearing slides in the middle of Dragonspine’s freezing winter.

“I am going to choose to ignore that that doesn’t phase you…” Kaeya’s tone had yet to change as he stepped into the lab, a rather puffy coat over his usual attire. Albedo glanced over, just for a moment, quickly taking note, “What happened to you being able to ‘handle the cold” huh?” Kaeya grabbed a random object off a shelf, examining it, “You get to wear slides in below-freezing weather, I think I’m allowed to wear whatever I want.” He pretended to examine the object for a few more moments before putting it back down and meeting Albedo’s deadpan gaze. “I’ve told you not to touch my things. I don’t want you causing a ruckus, or worse, hurting yourself.”

Kaeya had to hold back a laugh, raising an eyebrow, “Does my sweet alchemist worry about such things happening? I’m not that clumsy ‘Bedo, I didn’t drop it.” Just as he finished his sentence, he leaned a hand on the scuffed-up barrel beside Albedo’s table. As if timed just right, a muted crack sounded from below Kaeya’s hand before the weight snapped the cover of the old barrel in half. Kaeya scrambled to gather himself, rubbing his wrist as he looked at Albedo with a rather sheepish grin and a nervous chuckle. Albedo raised a single eyebrow before turning back to the canvas in front of him.

“I’m sorry,” Kaeya spoke sincerely before moving right beside Albedo. “It’s fine, it was quite old, most likely frail from the cold. You’re lucky it was empty and didn’t have any liquid in it.” Albedo once again briefly glanced at Kaeya “That’s good,” Kaeya flashed him a small grin. Albedo sighed, relieved that his comment was able to reassure Kaeya enough to not ruin his mood over something so trivial.

“What are you working on?” Kaeya attempted to wipe a flick of paint off of Albedo’s cheek, causing the other to flinch at the contact. A faint hint of pink tainted his cheeks, though the contrasting forest green paint made it obvious. “A fox. Klee spotted one the last time she visited,” Kaeya hummed to let Albedo know he was listening, gently leaning his head against the blonde’s head (it would usually be a struggle but Albedo was just a bit taller on the stool he sat on to paint), “She almost demanded I paint her one to hang in her bedroom in Mondstadt. I’m just adding the final details.”

Kaeya stared at Albedo’s ungloved hand. He thought for a moment, considering the fact that Albedo didn’t usually wear this little clothing. There were usually many layers to his outfit, especially when staying in Dragonspine. His usual short-sleeved coat hung on a coat rack by the front of the cave and he wore the shirt that was usually underneath it. Below his shorts were no longer his boots but those godawful slides that Kaeya had to wonder where he even got them from. Last, his… tights? Leggings? Kaeya wasn’t sure… but he had to applaud Albedo for not wandering around his lab letting his toes freeze off.

Kaeya continued to watch him paint, lips in a straight line. He would never admit that he was jealous of a paintbrush for getting to be held by Albedo. Kaeya resisted the urge to snatch the paintbrush from him and intertwine his fingers with Albedo’s.

“Do you need something? This is quite the impromptu visit.”

Kaeya lifted his head to stare at the side of Albedo’s head with a huff and a pout, he made a short noise of annoyance when he noticed Albedo’s side-eye, “I can’t come visit you? My partner is always away, secluded in his little lab half the time, and he won’t even let me spare a minute to say hello?”

Albedo held back an eye roll before gently placing down both his palette and brush. He turned in his seat to face Kaeya with a soft smile, placing two cold palms to his face, “You know that’s not true. Either way, you’re never in Dragonspine unless you have to be, what’s come up?” Kaeya sighed, face slumping into Albedo’s hands. He looked away, a false angered look on his face, “Sucrose requires your assistance in Mondstadt... BUT-” the knight stood up straight, Albedo bringing his hands to his lap, “I volunteered to come on their behalf after they mentioned they were going to be heading up!” The grin on his face was contagious, Albedo holding back a chuckle, “Of course you did.”

“What could Sucrose need that they couldn’t just meet me in my lab for?”

Kaeya shrugged, leaning his hip against the table beside him, “They said it was a matter that needed handling in Mondstadt. I believe their original intention was to travel to your lab and return with you in tow. I assume it would just be easier at the lab in Mond.”

“The fact that you volunteered for a trip you seem to have assumed half the information about is quite concerning.” Albedo raised a brow, earning another nervous chuckle from Kaeya. “It’s Sucrose. I don’t think they would have, albeit begrudgingly, let me go in their place if it wasn’t safe.” Albedo shook his head in dismissing disapproval.

Kaeya stuffed his hands into his coat pockets, “It’s not urgent, they said it was alright if I took my time, so I’m in no rush and have plenty of time to bug my beloved.” Kaeya teased, eyebrows wiggling as he scooted closer to Albedo who only stared up at him with quite the poker face.

There was a short moment where the two awkwardly stared at each other, Kaeya hoping Albedo would have some sort of response to his words, only for the alchemist to continue staring, most likely to purposefully irk the cavalry captain.

‘What the fuck is he thinking right now? There is no way I can understand with that face he makes-’ Kaeya felt his eye twitch.

Kaeya finally ripped his hands from his pockets, slumping over, ‘You’re making me regret this decision Albedo!” He huffed at the alchemist’s less-than-talkative mood, turning around and looking over his shoulder. “I’m going back to Mond, shall I let Sucrose know when you’ll be back?”

Albedo stood up, sighing before finally speaking, “You’re a big baby. Let me grab my things and I’ll head down the mountain with you.” Albedo didn’t miss the way Kaeya’s eyes lit up as he began to put away his paints and pack his things to leave.
