Chapter Text
It had felt like ages since that night in the woods. Since the fires burned and the adrenaline rushed in Jules and Theo's blood. But somehow the calm of Oliver and Carmen being gone made time feel like it went by so slowly. In truth it had been a couple of months. Months which felt almost perfect. There were still monsters in Savannah, but it wasn't as much as before. Which left Calliope time to talk with Juliette and Ben. They all had become close, close enough for Ben to know that Cal wasn't just happy being friends.
By being Jules best friend he knew she felt the same, of course both of them were far too anxious to do anything about it. Neither wanted to mess up their friendship. But anyone could tell there was more there, the way they acted left no question that there were still feelings there. Honestly maybe the feelings they had for each other never left. It was hard to know, but that didn't matter now.
"Cal, hey wait up! I've been wanting to talk to you!" Ben said, jogging up to her. Time to put things in motion.
"What's up Ben?" She asked, looking at him with brows furrowed in slight confusion. "Um, well I know that you like Jules, and I also know that neither of you will make a move so I'm trying to push you towards that," Ben said looking at Cal with a small smirk on his face.
"I don't know, I don't want to mess things up and I don't want them to end like before," Cal said, messing with her hair anxiously.
"You both have changed plus, Oliver is gone and so are most the things stopping you, if you never go for it you'll never know," Ben said, putting a hand on Cal's shoulder and looking her in the eyes. "I'm not saying you have to, but consider it, okay?" Ben looked at Cal, smiling then going to his Jeep, leaving so many questions and so few answers.
As always, life was beyond confusing. But that week was spent overthinking every sleight of hand and every text sent between the two. Every small thing could be over thought, as if they already were not.
But soon enough it became too much, you can’t just sit and think all the time, at some point it becomes unbearable to leave things unknown.
“Hey Jules,” CAl said looking up from the homework she was meant to be doing.
“What's up?” Jules said looking up at Cal. “I um, have been thinking and I was wondering if you would maybe like to go on a date?” Both girls' hearts were racing, Jules messed with the cuff on her lavender sweater before smiling and saying yes ever so softly. It was so simple, but maybe that's what was needed.
Love is meant to last through hell, but you need to know someone in the heavenly clouds before you can say whether you would suffer with them. Whether you should suffer for them. This was their chance, a chance to be “normal” and a chance to be teenagers and not fighters.
Good things take time, now all that was left was the hope that they would have time. So many questions remained, like what would become of them when Jules looked so young and Cal looked older. But that's the thing, though they would experience time differently it didn't matter, because time was all they needed. It didn’t matter if it was forever or five years, you had to love what you got.
Somehow, no matter what you had to look back on what you once felt, the decision remains yours about whether you look back on the good or the bad. It was all a matter of opinion, and how much you hated those memories.
Jules hated what she did to Theo and the entire Burns family, she hated how much she hurt them. Theo said it was okay, but Jules felt bad nonetheless. That was something she would apologize for until the day she died, if death was even attainable.
After everything they had gone through it seemed that there would always be some guilt. Maybe that was okay, maybe someday they would get over it and they could forgive themselves the same way they forgive each other. So much was unknown, but that's how the future worked.
You rolled with the punches, and hoped that things were easy to handle. There was the hope that Oliver was dead in Spain, but Oliver wasn’t going to be. Elinor was in prison, but waited until they figured out she was immortal. That was chaos waiting to happen.
The legacies had a field day after Davina died, and now it was all a rush to the crown.
But even after all that Calliope and Juliette sat near a river talking like everything was normal. Like tomorrow would come and go and like they lead normal teenage lives. The idea of college was brought up and it all sounded so simple. Maybe this was all they needed all along, to be with each other and let it all seem simple.
Neither were sure if they were lying to themselves or if they were keeping each other grounded. But either way moments like these made it all seem normal, and for now that was all they needed.
After getting home Jules ranted to Ben, who she knew had something to do with this. Ben just smiled, happy to be back to what he remembered, back to how they were. The only difference was that the truth was out, and everything was a bit more honest now.
Everything was happy, it wouldn’t always be like this, but for now two best friends giggled on the phone and the future seemed promising. That's all anyone can ask for, right?
“You know, it’s a little dull out here,” Oliver said, a drink in his hand looking out over a rocky beach. “You’re the one who chose to come here darling,” Carmen said looking at him.
“I know, but isn’t it more fun messing with people?” he said coming up behind his girlfriend. “Oh it is but we can do that here honey,” she said looking back at him.
“Fine, for now,” he said, going inside for the night.
“For now its fine, but one day Savannah and I must worry again, I just hope in that time Oliver gains sense,” Carmen said looking out over the rocky beach before going back inside.
