Chapter Text
You worked in the DEO labs one day with Lena, trying to get some alien tech to work while also annoying the crap out of Lena. She had become like a sister to you, as had Kara.
She was hovering over her shoulder, just that little too close for comfort. She would swat at you from time to time like you were an annoying fly until she had had enough and turned to you with a threatening finger, full CEO glare in place.
"I swear (Y/N), if you don't let me finish, I will call Alex and have her deal with you." You gasp in mock shock before pouting. Lena knew Alex was your one weakness and wasn't afraid to use it.
"not fair; you always pull out the girlfriend card to get what you want." This made Lena laugh; she knew you would use the same treat on Kara to calm her down.
"well, maybe it wouldn't be as effective if you weren't so head over heels for her." Lena counters, all while continuing to work on her tablet.
"I can't help it. I just love her so much and will marry her one day." You had this dreamy look in your eyes again, and you're all lovey-dovey attitude made Lena fake gage, snapping you out of your state.
"oh please, Kara is ad bad as I am. I don't think I haven't heard the special pet names you have for each other. On top, I can read minds, so I know what is going on in your head. Luckily our rooms are soundproofed." You snicker, making Lena blush while she glares at you. Your snickering turns into a full belly laugh after this; teasing her was just too easy.
Lena could be snarky and sarcastic, just like you, and the two of you liked nothing more than to rile each other up. However, before Lena could come back with a snarky comment, a commotion in the control room drew both of your attention, and you immediately went to see what was happening.
What you saw was not pleasant. Almost all of The Avengers stood in the DEO control room facing Alex in her full director pose, flanked by Kara in her super suit. You really pitied Tony, who was trying to intimidate her by yelling.
"for the last time, sir, I ask you why you stormed into my building." Alex's tone told you she was very irritated; seeing as it was tony she was talking to, you didn't blame her.
"out of my way, lady, I'm here on official Avengers business and would like to speak to your director." Tony acted like those words meant anything; in New York, they may, but they had no value here. Something non of them were probably aware of. They always acted like the Avengers were above the law.
His words did seem to make Alex angrier, and Kara had to put a hand on her shoulder to keep her from advancing. You wanted to be beside her so she didn't have to face these assholes alone.
"I don't care who you people are, and I want an explanation why all of you stormed into my building and started demanding things." Alex spat out from between clenched teeth. She wasn't at all intimidated by the billionaire in front of her. From your stories, she knew exactly who the men were. She wanted them out of National City as fast as possible, preferably with as little interaction with you as possible.
Alex saw you approaching from the labs together with Lena and gave you a slight headshake. Signalling you to stay back, she could handle these dipshits for now. You gave a sceptical look but retreated after telling Lena where you were going. The raven's head gave you a nod before continuing her walk toward Kara.
Steve saw that his friend was getting nowhere with his demanding attitude and decided to step in. hoping that his Manhatten smile would lose the woman in front of him a bit. It usually worked with all the women.
"my apologies for my friend. My name is Steve Rogers. This here is Tony Stark." Steve motions to tony, who is still irritated. The redhead in front of him still looked rather unimpressed by Captain America's golden charms but nodded to the introductions, so Steve decided to continue.
"Also, this is the rest of my team. Wanda, Natasha, Vision, Bruce, Clint, Bucky and Sam." Steve thought he was getting somewhere when he was interrupted.
"yes, it is nice, but that still doesn't explain what the lot of you are doing in my building." Alex comments. America's golden boy charms did not fool her.
"We are here about some potential HYDRA information that could be in the hands of an organisation called CADMUS. We would like to speak to your director for a possible team-up to retrieve this information. If he could listen to our proposal, at least that would be lovely." Steve asked, still with the same smile. Hoping it would persuade somebody, but let's be honest, he didn't stand a chance compared to Kara's pout and puppy eyes.
While Alex dealt with your past, you were back in your lab, hoping to get the power source you and Lena had been working on to function. It was after Kryptonian design, and if it did what you hoped it would, people would have clean, cheap energy.
Besides the tinkering you did, you also listened to the conversation in the control room. Steve and Tony seemed to be doing all the talking.
From their thoughts, you gathered that Natasha observed everybody in the room, as was Clint. Banner seemed very nervous, and Bucky and Sam were simply bored. Wanda was trying to read everybody's minds but was failing miserably.
You knew your thought blockers would come in handy, but Wanda quickly realised something was wrong, making you laugh. Was she always this hopeless?
Besides thought blockers, the DEO was surrounded by a forcefield that negated anybody's enhanced powers that weren't authorised by the system. This also included the super serum from Steve and Bucky. Basically, the superfriends were the only ones left with their powers.
You were so caught up in what was happening in the next room that you didn't register the power source in your hand, overloading until it was at a critical point. Luckily nobody else was in the lab with you cause you were just fast enough to surround the device with your powers to minimise the explosion. Nothing was destroyed. The only thing that happened was that you were blown back by the kinetic energy released during the eruption—sending you flying into the control room and skitting against the floor for a couple of meters. Ambarisment settled in as you just lay there on the floor wanting the ground to swallow you.
"I am the director of the DEO, so whatever it is you want to discuss, you can do it with me," Alex says. Seeing the shock on all their faces was priceless. Mostly the blond guy, but you did tell her he was rather old fashioned. She really hoped she could resolve this matter before you had to be involved. When Steve finally got out of his stupor, he regained his professionalism.
"Sorry for the shocked reaction. Non of us expected the director to be a woman." Alex gathered as much from their reactions. This sure was a troublesome bunch.
"Alright, I'm willing to hear your story. Let's go into a command room while Supergirl gathers everybody needed for this mission." Alex looked at her sister to empathise that mend you too. She would apologise to you profusely at home, but she really needed you if CADMUS was going to be involved.
Just as Kara was bout to come and get you, a shock wave made the ground shudder, followed by you flying into the room. In moments, Kara was at your side, wanting to make sure you were alright and didn't hurt yourself. You had your hand over your face but were mumbling under your breath.
"I hate Kryptonian mathematics. Why couldn't you guys use logical numerals?" you grumble out, looking up at your best friend. The Kryptonian chuckle. This little banter gave Alex the time to approach without losing her director vibes, and she wouldn't show weakness no matter how much she wanted to rush to you.
"status agent!" Alex's voice pierced through the silent room and your foggy brain. Snapping your eyes open, you look at your girlfriend. She also talked to you through your mental link, asking if you were okay, and you were quick to answer her.
"small miscalculation with the prototype, no major problems, director." You gave Alex a smirk while using the title. "I'm okay. Love, don't worry." You send it through your mental link.
"good, you are needed in the command room for a mission update." She tells you in a stern voice while apologising mentally when she offers you a hand to get up.
"I understand, babe. No need to feel sorry." Taking the offered hand, you get hoisted up, and when you land on your feet, it is the first time The Avengers get a good look at you.
"(Y/N)!" came their shocked reaction all at once. You don't acknowledge them and just make your way toward the command room, closely followed by Alex and Kara.
You are starting to get annoyed by the staring. You are seated between Lena and Kara. Alex figured that since CADMUS was involved, Lena should be too, and Alex needed her to remember not all billionaires were assholes. When Lena had taken her seat beside you, she informed you that the prototype wasn't completely destroyed and that the date was salvaged.
"Okay, screw this! I got to know." Wanda yells after her silent conversation with Natasha.
"(Y/N) what happened? Where have you been for the past four years?" While Wanda had her emotional meltdown, Natasha could only stare daggers at you, which you stared right back. If they thought you were the same meek girl, they knew they had another thing coming.
"non of your business where I have been. As for what happened just now, I was working on a new potential clean power source." You explain, shocking your previous team. Non of them knew you were good at engineering.
"what potential power source? As far as I know, Stark Industries had the newest and cleanest on the planet." It seems like his ego might be a little bit bruised. It is not you, however, that puts him in his place.
"Sorry, mister Stark it may be true that you have the cleanest energy up until now, but the data we have acquired until now tells us that our new energy source will produce energy that is ten times purer and has the price yours would cost to produce. Making it affordable for the average household to buy, where yours is only for the big companies." In her CEO voice, Lena explains that you have seen grown men cry when she directs this in the boardroom. It hadn't quite the same effect on Tony, but he did seem riled up. He stalks over to her and slams his hands down on the table in front of her.
Lena isn't the kind of woman who lets herself be threatened or bullied, so she doesn't back down. Plus, she has a Kryptonian girlfriend that would fight anybody for Lena.
The tension between the two CEOs is high as they stare each other down. Lena had the advantage. She knew who she was dealing with. Tony probably had no clue who Lena was. Everybody on your side of the table knew how it would go down. Then Lena went for the killing blow.
"Sorry for not introducing myself earlier. My name is Lena Luthor, CEO of L-corp." not much more had to be said when Lena delivered a line like that with a sweet smile.
Stark industries may be one of the most successful companies, but L-corp was one of the only ones making more money. Tony's face told you all. Superfriends one, Avengers zero.
He slumps back into his seat, defeat written all over his face. Steve and Bucky had looked at the whole exchange with confusion. Bruce and Clint had their jaws almost hit the ground. Natasha and Wanda…
"I'm telling you, Natasha, something is wrong. I have tried to read their minds but cannot do it, and during the explosion, I tried to use my magic, but they wouldn't activate." Wanda whispered to Natasha. You could barely contain your smirk. Only Alex's stern gaze stopped you, but you could read her mind, so the scowl wasn't convincing.
Although you loved watching the Avengers squirm, you also wanted them out of the DEO as fast as possible.
"Alright, let's get back to business. I want this shit over with as fast as possible." You tell the group, and from Steve's reaction, you know he wants to say something about your choice of words. You dare him to say something with your eyes, but he keeps quiet. Alex decides to take over before you start a brawl in the middle of the DEO.
"you were here because you have received intel that CADMUS has some HYDRA information." Alex summarises what they had told her. Steve nods in confirmation.
"Do you guys know which CADMUS facility may have the information?" Brainy asks while opening a map with every know CADMUS facility. It stays tranquil after that and you sight. Leave it to the Avengers to go after a huge and dive headfirst into danger without any plan.
"you guys have no idea where it is, do you." You constate. Steve and Tony glare at you but stay quiet, not wanting to admit their failure. Bruce did seem to want to give you information to make your work easier.
"We have picked up this information during intercepting HYDRA coded intel. The only thing we intercepted was CADMUS. Then we relayed it to Fury, who told us about National City, so we took a Quinjet and here we are." Bruce explains, much to the dismay of his friends, and all you guys can do is just stare at them.
"(Y/N) you worked with these guys?" Nia asks, her tone shocked. Even you are a little taken back at how chaotic they are. You knew they were impulsive, but this took the cake.
"so basically, non of you have any idea what the information is, where it is or if it is even there." you conclude. Getting up, you take over from brainy. You start applying filters, so the number of dots on the map decrease until two are left.
"Okay, these two are the most likely places to hold the information, if there are any." You say putting the schematics of the facilities on the big screen.
"Okay, let's go!" As he gets up, Steve says, as do the rest of the Avengers. He did look back when nobody from your team got up.
"where are you idiots going!" you ask, losing your patience. These people would be your death, and the avengers looked at you like a couple of deers caught in headlights.
"to go get the information?" Sam answers ask.
"Do you know where you are going, who you are up against? Hell, do you even know what CADMUS is?" Alex laid a hand on your shoulder to calm you down.
"relax, we are used to dealing with HYDRA, and I'm sure these guys are no different." Bucky commented, shrugging his shoulders like he had no care. If only they were as easy as HYDRA. No CADMUS was far more cunning than HYDRA and more about brains than brawns.
"that James is where you are wrong. Unlike HYDRA, CADMUS is used to dealing with Aliens ten times stronger than you could ever hope to be and that if they are nice to you. You people are dealing with forces way over your head. They won't just send a couple of goons after you for you to fight. No, they have alien technology to protect them, and if Lillian decided to send her tin can after you, all of you are screwed." You snark. This did seem to get the smarter Avengers to think twice. They all looked very confused when you mentioned aliens.
"what do you mean with aliens. SCHIELD hasn't registered any invasions since the battle of New York." Wanda says, dumbfounded. Making everybody at your side of the table look at them with wide eyes before laughing.
"You guys don't really believe that no aliens are living on this planet just because you stopped one invasion, right." You ask, hoping they are joking. When no reaction came, you guessed they weren't kidding. Alex tells everybody to sit back down, feeling a headache coming up.
"What proof do you have that aliens are living on earth disguised as humans?" In a solemn voice, Steve asked not to believe that some people he may have saved were not from this world. You laugh and point at Kara
"people meet Supergirl, aka Kara Zor'ell. Also, the last daughter of Krypton. Her powers are fuelled by the sun. she is practically a walking god on this earth." You are deadpan, and Kara only waves shyly.
"she is faster and Pietro with ease. Beats Steve and Bucky combined in the strength department. Has laser vision that puts Tony's pulsars to shame. Has a natural resistance against mental manipulation and is considered a genius by human standards and more." To back up your claims, you show them a couple of videos that show Kara as Supergirl saving the city and the world.
"you forget fantastic girlfriend." Lena whispers against Kara's ear before giving her a little kiss, making Kara blush uncontrollably. This information is a bit much cause they all seem to be dumbfounded.
Alex had to admit it was sexy seeing you take the lead like that, but CADMUS had potential HYDRA information, and if it was true, then the DEO had to know. So she stepped in when it seemed like you had your satisfaction in crushing your previous team.
"We appreciate the briefing, but I think it is better to let the DEO handle the mission." Alex says, getting the conversation back on track and pointing at you and Kara, sharing a look you and Kara smile at each other before high-fiving. Tony and Steve, not having to process everything, just nod with a comment.
You give Alex a quick kiss on the cheek before Kara swoops you off and flies out of the building with you. You don't even standstill by the gesture, and neither does Alex.
Natasha and Wanda, however, look at the exchange with wide eyes. They would never have thought you would have moved on from Natasha.
After the two of you leave, the Deo agents forget that the Avengers are there and continue their work. Brainy and Lena try to help you and Kara in any way possible. Nia was called back to CatCo for work, and Alex watched the monitors that showed your and Kara's vital signs and the layout of the building and where the two of you were. She registers the two people behind her but doesn't acknowledge them.
"Who are you to (Y/N)?" Wanda asks, basically demanding. When things calmed down, Wanda and Natasha decided to talk to Alex and find out exactly what was happening.
Alex wasn't about to play their game and just kept on working. However, the two women kept on staring.
"why don't you try to read my mind and find out." Alex bated, wanting to see their reaction when they realised they had no advantage. To see them feel powerless, just like you did the first time Alex saw you. She still couldn't see their faces, but she would say it wasn't going that well from the groans and grunts behind her.
"what's the problem? Don't get anything through?" Alex couldn't help the smirk forming on her face; this was too good to be through. You told her Wanda would use her powers on you nonstop when the two of you lived in the tower. You were very adamant about protecting everybody's minds from such intrusions.
"I can't. Something is blocking my powers, but I guess you already knew that." Wanda was annoyed she had to play this woman's game, and if she had her powers, she would immediately know what she wanted to know. The worst part was that said woman was enjoying her misery.
"Right, you don't have the necessary authority to use your powers here, and non of you have. So that means no mind-reading for you and no superpowers for your two friends on steroids." Alex said with a little more glee to her words than should be, but she simply couldn't help herself, but she just couldn't help herself when she saw the women's frustrated looks.
Maybe she should lift a tip of the curtain just to annoy them more.
"to your earlier question. (Y/N) is an extraordinary person, and not only to me but to everybody on my team. We consider her family." That last part seemed to strike a nerve with both redheads. However, before they can boast about their disagreement, Alex continues.
"When (Y/N) came to us, she was a shell of the person she is now. It took her months to start, and trust us. After she told us why we all understood why." Although Alex sounded calm, she was livid. These were the people who left you behind, who tough you were worthless. It took so long for you to find your won voice, and when you finally did, it turned out you could give Lena a run for her money in snarkiness.
Steve and Tony stayed in the control room to observe the ongoing mission, a mission that was the equivalent of a whole Avengers team mission done by only two people. The worst part was that neither you nor Kara struggled a bit. Brainy was able to hack the security system to see on the camera what was happening. You and Kara seemed to work as the perfect duo. Although Kara provided the brute force in the team and was nearly indestructible, she didn't get cocky over it. She fought with her head. You were the supporter in the group but would step on the forefront of it was wiser to use your powers than Kara's.
"I never knew (Y/N) was this good at using her powers" Steve stood there speechless. With the fines you and Kara worked, Steve could only hope for in his team. Tony, in the meantime, was still not over the part that aliens lived on earth without most people knowing. Both were also fascinated with the working of the DEO, and it was running as efficiently as SHIELD, maybe even better.
All of the Avengers that were there watching you were amazed. To be fair, they never really did enough missions with you to know how you fought. Alex has a feeling of pride growing in her. These people thought you weren't worth their time and never took the time to get to know you. It felled good to see they realised what they had lost. She couldn't wait for you and Kara to get back and congratulate the both of you on a mission well done.
The mission turned out more straightforward than you thought, and the CADMUS facility was cleared faster than you had thought, but no information about HYDRA had come up. To be entirely sure, you had implemented a virus in their mainframe to search for anything to do with HYDRA, and it then would send a signal to let you know. That also meant that you and Kara couldn't do much for now.
When you told Kara the virus was uploaded, she picked you up and flew back to the DEO. You were dreading having to see them again. Even worse, Pietro wasn't with them, so he still hadn't met Alex and the others.
When your feet touched the ground, you immediately made your way toward Alex to inform her of your findings. However, before reaching her, Steve blocked your pad and stared at you. What was he hoping for that you were about to brief him on what had happened during your mission? You weren't part of his team anymore, so you had no obligation to give him any information. If Alex wanted to share what you had discovered, that was okay. Until she gave the green light, he would be getting jack shit from you.
Sidestepping him, you start whispering everything you had learned about the virus in Alex's ear. You couldn't help the small kiss you left on her ear when you retracted yourself. It had been a couple of hours since you had been able to touch your future wife, so maybe you were a bit touch-deprived. Luckily non of the Avengers registered the kiss or didn't comment on it if they did.
"We don't have to tell them if we don't want to." You say to Alex, who immediately gives you her thinker look, telling you she was considering at least the possibility. Ultimately you knew she wasn't going to do that. Not telling them left the opportunity, they would come back, and non of you wanted that.
Alex turned around, so she was facing the Avengers when she spoke. It wasn't hard to get everybody's attention once she turned to them. You could pick up from their thoughts that they were dying to know what happened and what you found out.
While Alex explained the situation about the mission, you stayed close to her. Not exactly touching, but closer than usual. Natasha and Wanda seemed to pick up on this and started getting closer. You saw them out of the corner of your eye but didn't pay attention. You were too engaged in watching your future wife put the world's mightiest heroes in their place.
Your mistake cause before you knew it, you saw something fly in Alex's direction. Instinct kicking in, you use your powers to deflect the object.
Rage overtakes you. How dare 'they' try and harm the love of your life. After breaking you down piece by piece, they have no right to interfere in the life you have built here. Clearly, they didn't respect Alex and your friends, which caused you to lose the last bit of respect you had for them. You might have forgiven them in the past, but they could drop dead for all you cared for watching them be so condescending toward them.
The first people who were going to get a piece of your mind are the people who broke your heart. Use your powers to pin them against the wall, feet elevated to form the ground. Your rage is so big it takes a physical form through your abilities making everybody take a step back.
"I can forgive many things and accept even more of them, but I will not stand by while you threaten the life of the woman I love." You grith out from between clenched teeth as you get in Natasha's face. The ex-assassin shudders at how mad and scary you look, and the blue aura surrounding you only adds to the effect.
The other Avengers want to intervene, but you have them frozen in place. So the only thing they can do is how to tear into their teammate.
"From the moment you have stepped in here, you have done nothing but act high and mighty while you all are nothing more than a sad bunch of broken toys that SHIELD can't let play with others, and when you don't get your ways, you just throw temper tantrums, hoping somebody will break. Well, I won't stand for that abuse ever again." You yell so the whole team can hear you loud and clear before turning back to Natasha and Wanda, still pinned against the wall.
"the two of you are probably the worst of all. But I'm done with all of you. So I will give all of you one chance to get out of here before losing my temper. I'm going to let go and count to ten. By the time I reach zero, I want all of you to be gone and never come back." You kept your voice level so everybody would know you were severe and knew not to test your patience.
Alex could see you struggling in reeling in your emotions, stepping closer. She laid her hand on your shoulder to help ground you. You relaxed a little the moment you felled Alex's touch and even smiled when you turned to her and started counting.
When the Avengers noticed they could move again, they took off in the Quinjett. The farther they got away, the more relaxed you became. You were done with the Avengers and wanted nothing more than to continue your current life with your new family.
