Chapter Text
___ sighed as she slowly sat on the old wooden chair outside of the cabin. After the battle with Demise she had set out on a personal mission, to find more people like her on the surface. She had travelled for around five years before she even gained a clue of the people she had sensed back in Lanayru Gorge. But eventually she had found a small group, including the figure that had run away from her that day, a woman named Aivel. The group had introduced themselves as wandering travelers who were looking for other people on the surface, and like ___ they all performed magic. In that time Zelda, Link and Groose had made work on making the surface livable to survive in. While they did that, ___ and the small group decided to settle near the Lanayru Desert. Some members of the group had recommended it as there were likely more people where they came from.
Over time the small group had grown larger, strangely the group mostly consisted of women with a few men, who oddly had no magical ability. However, any children born to the group were female. With the exception of one, ten years later Aivel had given birth to a son, Kaihan. Aivel had been lost in childbirth but her son was alive and healthy. A year later a small group of the remaining men of the group and some of the women travelled to make contact with another group rumoured to be living in the mountains. No one returned and after a few months everyone accepted that they were dead. As the group grew larger they eventually became more like a tribe, rarely leaving the desert.
Out of the four, Zelda had been the first to pass. She died young at the age of thirty-five, in her sleep. The strain of both the Goddess's power as well as having her soul sucked from her then being put back in had taken a larger toll on her than any of them would have predicted. However in the time she had been on the surface she had begun to build the foundations of what would one day form a large settlement, if not an entire kingdom. The people had referred to her solely as Hylia, despite how many times she made it clear she didn't want the worship. In her life people had come far and wide to see her and hear her words. She had also lowered the people's fear of magic, for a time. Once she had passed, certain groups had taken to twisting her words and over the next twenty years fear of magic had been seeded once again in the small villages. These villages became areas that the desert tribe soon learned to avoid as they were met with at best cold looks, and at worst being chased out with intentions of violence. The next to pass had been Groose, he had kept his promise to Link and Zelda about coming back down to the surface. In fact, he returned after a little over a week. His loftwing was covered in various pouches filled with tools, blueprints and material lists. He quickly became the main settlements' authority on building. Be it houses, barns and the occasional bomb-launching catapult for defenses. This left Link and ___ alive. The two continued to communicate with letters that soon took longer and longer to arrive, mostly because he was at who knows what corner of the world.
She heard footsteps a few metres away and looked up, ___ squinted, now at the age of eighty her right eye was completely blind and the left was clearly heading there. When the figure got closer ___ smiled.
"Kaihan, whatever's the matter boy?" She asked. After Aivel passed and magic power emerged in him ___ had taken to mentoring the boy. Although ___ had temporarily led the tribe, that position was now held by him. Under her the tribe had no name, no one really knew what they should have called themselves. However, once Kaihan had come to lead the tribe after she stepped down he named them after the numerous dragonflies that roamed the area. From then onwards the tribe became known as the Gerudo.
"I just wanted a moment away from it all," he sighed before holding out a piece of paper.
"And to deliver this," he said. ___ took the piece of paper and a small smile crossed her face, another letter to read. She nodded in thanks before carefully putting the letter into one of the many pockets of her coat.
"Some of them are getting nervous about the hylians close to the desert, some suggest we move further outwards. Others want to drive them away, I thought maybe your old friend might be able to help," he explained. ___ closed her eyes, thinking over their options before shaking her head.
"I'll let Link know," she said before deciding a change in subject was needed. She slowly rose to her feet and headed into the cabin to prepare drinks for the two of them.
"Evira's taken a liking to those dolls you made her, she's named them and everything," Kaihan said.
"She named them?" ___ asked, laughing lightly.
"Yeah, Koume and Kotake, 'the twin witches' she calls them. Hylia protect this world if she has magic herself. It's going to need it," Kaihan laughed. His young daughter was almost obsessed with magic and often came to ___ for her to show her some.
" 'The twin witches' wherever did she-" ___ was cut off by a sudden feeling of breathlessness and fell to her knees.
"___!" Kaihan yelled and knelt down next to the old woman to help her up. ___ kept trying to regain her breath. However, it was in vain and she fell to the ground. Kaihan shook her to try to wake her up, but after a few minutes it was clear the woman was dead.
Days later the Gerudo held a funeral for their old leader. Kaihan had sent messengers to notify the hero of his friend's passing. However the messengers returned with news of their own. On the same day that ___ had died the hero had passed as well. All of those who had been present for the Goddess's mission had died, and with them the knowledge of the curse put upon them. It would only be a matter of time before the cycle repeated and the land would be thrown into chaos once again. Only time would tell when.
