Yun Jin hummed, scribbling a few random notes in her notebook, leaving behind loops of blue glittery ink on the pale pages. Xinyan beamed across the table at her, eyes soft as she tapped the tip of her pencil to the page, the little plastic cat head at the end bobbling with every movement. Yun Jin giggled, reaching out and batting at it, and Xinyan squawked in mock outrage.
“Hey! Mr. Cotton Candy is very sensitive!” She protested, and Yun Jin giggled, running her pinkie between his tiny ears.
“My apologies, Mr. Cotton Candy, you looked like you wanted to go on the swings,” teased Yun Jin, sneaking a sly smile at Xinyan.
Xinyan’s responding grin was almost blinding as the memory flowed between them, the story of two little girls on the playground. Yun Jin hummed, a faint melody playing in the back of her mind as she remembered how small she had been, how her fingers had scrabbled at the seat of the swing and she had pouted until tears filled her eyes. Then two little hands had wrapped around her from behind, and Yun Jin squealed as she was lifted into the air just enough to get a firm grip on the swing. Xinyan giggled from behind as Yun Jin pawed at the seat, grasping the edge and scrambling aboard to turn around and beam at her savior.
Xinyan had clapped, beaming as she hurried to push Yun Jin on the swing. The two of them had squealed, laughing so hard that even the Millelith had cracked a smile, and promised to play together the next day. But then Yun Jin had been yanked on a sudden tour, and the two had been separated for so long…
Going to that one concert had been the best decision in Yun Jin’s life. That she had found a girlfriend in it was certainly a bonus, but…finding a true friend was more important. Someone who sat down with her and brainstormed songs for hours, who ran singing drills together, who came over with just the right tea for her sore throat, who attended as many shows as they could. The best part of their relationship was the friendship it was founded on.
“Ooo, wait, hum that again!” Chirped Xinyan, scribbling quickly in her notebook, and Yun Jin blinked back to reality.
“Huh? Oh, uh…”
“You just drifted off, didn’t you?”
“…Maybe,” admitted Yun Jin with a giggle that Xinyan joined her in. “I can’t help it, being with you is like living in a song.”
Xinyan’s face flushed a petal pink at the sweet words, and Yun Jin leaned across to press a kiss to that wonderful warmth. “You’re the music that always inspires me.”
“Stooooooop,” moaned Xinyan, and Yun Jin surrendered with a gleeful giggle. “You’re gonna make me explode!”
“Love you too~”
Xinyan stuck out her tongue at Yun Jin, who just scribbled in another row of notes, and Xinyan sighed. She propped her chin up in one hand and studied the opera singer across from her. She would never have thought that the renowned Miss Yun would be so…playful. So cute. So…perfect. When they had been reunited a few years ago, Xinyan had been convinced that Yun Jin was going to criticize her performance, to insist on singing lessons, or to demean her craft the way most opera singers did. They looked down their noses on her, sniffing and refusing to even consider attending her shows. That was fine, Xinyan wasn’t going to force anyone to come, but like…if you don’t like it, don’t look.
Then Yun Jin had begun complimenting her like they barely had two seconds together, talking so fast that Xinyan considered suggesting rap to her, and Xinyan had felt something unfamiliar swell in her chest. The two of them hit it off, comparing singing notes, and Xinyan couldn’t help but feel like they had both come out of it stronger singers.
Now, here they were, an opera singer and a rock star chilling in Xinyan’s house and creating songs together. They were so similar and yet so different at the same time. And to think that the little girl at the park all those years ago remembered her…
Xinyan chuckled, jotting down a few lines and leaning across to press a kiss to Yun Jin’s suddenly flushed cheek.
“You’re the greatest song this universe has ever made,” she whispered against her girlfriend’s soft skin, and Yun Jin made a strangled sort of sound that sent Xinyan into a fit of giggles. “I love you, beautiful.”
Yun Jin made a noise akin to a shriek, and Xinyan gave in to her desire to just laugh. She reached over, drawing her girlfriend into her arms, and relished in the soft cuddles she received.
“I have an idea for my next song.”
“What a coincidence; as do I, my love.”
