Something Ends, Something Begins

Chapter 4: Odin (Deleted Scene)

Notes:

Here's the second drop!

Odin was one of the earliest scenes I removed from Act II of the story (and also the shortest of the three deleted scenes I will be posting). I initially envisioned an extended sequence after Jinx and Silco (begrudgingly) agree to help Vardon repair his airship.
- Jinx and Silco would have visited a market and spied Vardon talking to a few local police officers.
- Silco would then instruct Jinx to follow Vardon and kill him.
- Jinx would reappear while Silco gathers (steals) supplies from Vardon's workshop.
- Jinx would report that Vardon and the police officers were friends, and that Vardon had not mentioned Jinx and Silco. Jinx had assessed the situation and had left without anyone noticing.
- There would be a small argument. Jinx will laugh at Silco's worries and warp away.
- Silco realises Vardon's influence has already grown on Jinx, and his paranoia increases.

I ultimately cut the sequence and moved some of these elements into What You Wanted (I). I thought a longer scene would work better and move the story quicker, compared to an extended sequence of multiple short scenes.

Odin is the best written scene out of that sequence, and it is the scene which I have decided to clean up and post. I have amended the final sentence of the scene to make it stand alone.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Odin

She strolls through the market later, him, hobbling after her. He desperately wanted to return to their room, the day's tranquility already marred by Vardon. But when Vardonhad suggested the market he knew he could not refuse Jinx twice in a row.
Jinx hops from stall to stall, scans the wares before her with much enthusiasm. Then she reaches a stall selling trinkets, and she goes wild.

"Dad, look! They have sharks here too!"

She takes the wooden toy from the rack and presses it into his hand. The stall keeper smiles at her interest, sensing an opportunity.

"That ain't no shark, Miss. That's our little Odin.”

“The God?”

And he is proud of her, despite the stall keeper’s laughter. Because despite all that had happened, she still remembered his lessons.

“No, Miss. That’s our one-eyed salmon. Everyone calls him Odin.”

The stall keeper points towards the lake.

“You see him sometimes. In the lake."

He feels embarrassment and shame wash over his pride as the stall keeper makes eye contact with him, eager to seal the deal. In Zaun, Jinx would have walked away with the whole stall. Here, he can only nudge her to put it down, watch as the next child comes with her parents to take the toy.

"Remember it. We will return. From Noxus. I will buy you. Whatever you want."

"Nah, let's go see the real Odin."

She grabs his hand and drags him towards the lake, where she helps him sit on the shore before she squats beside him, and they look for Odin together.

Notes:

The remaining acts of Something Ends, Something Begins drop every Friday:

Act 2: 6 May 2022

Act 3: 13 May 2022

If you enjoyed this story and want more, or if the themes of trauma and parenthood interest you, please check out the (completely separate) first story of my planned trilogy, Of Faults and Fathers! Of Faults and Fathers, is a study of the cyclical nature of trauma and can be found at https://archiveofourown.org/works/35977399/chapters/89687344

I plan to write one more (again, separate, and this time, wildly different) story in the trilogy. Instead of a sequence of events, the trilogy will centre around similar themes of trauma and share specific emotional beats, symbols and characters. Think Wong Kar Wai’s Love Trilogy or Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Three Colours Trilogy, rather than a traditional trilogy like JRR Tolkien’s the Lord of the Rings trilogy or Christopher Nolan’s the Dark Knight trilogy.

But that third story will come later. I’ll be focusing on Something Ends, Something Begins for the next few weeks.

Thank you so much for reading.
