Work Text:
Megumi had to be in love. That was the only plausible explanation for why he was going along with this. It just had to be.
'This' being one of his boyfriend's pranks. Toge was notorious amongst their friends for his love of pranks, all ranging from stealing (and wearing) Kugisaki’s and Zenin-senpai's skirts to leaving buckets of water or chalk erasers above doors. The worst part was that he had no distinguishable pattern or schedule, he could go a month without doing anything and then he'd prank anyone within a hundred mile radius for three days straight.
Megumi was just glad it was mainly harmless pranks that only ended with Toge getting bonked on the head or chased around sometimes. In Megumi's case, when Toge replaced his shampoo with orange hair dye prior to them being a couple, he got the silent treatment, when he filled Megumi's shoes with syrup post them getting together, he got tickled mercilessly for a good hour. Not even being his boyfriend spared Megumi from his pranks, but at least Toge held back from pulling them on him a lot, he couldn't say the same for their friends or even their teachers though.
Which brings them to the present, him and Toge were currently cramped into a supply closet with pies in their hands. For once nobody had been sent on a mission, but instead of having a free day like they had hoped, Gojo-sensei had announced they had to clean up the classrooms to learn something about responsibility or whatever. He had paired them up and given them different rooms, and of course Toge learned what classrooms Panda-senpai and Itadori were doing at what time. And he had recently mastered the art of baking pies to boot, it was literally a recipe for disaster.
Megumi knew Toge was aware he didn't like to be involved in these types of things and that's probably why he never asked him to partake in them, if anything Gojo-sensei was Toge's partner in crime, but on a complete whim earlier Toge had asked if he would help him. A no had immediately formed on the tip of his tongue, but just one look at Toge's hopeful eyes and eager smile made it die instantly and be replaced with a reluctant yes.
So here he was, holding a pie topped with whipped cream in his hands, hiding in a dark closet with a giggling Toge next to him. That melodic sound and Toge's happiness was the only silver lining in all of this, the numerous downsides- they might get in trouble, they were gonna make a mess, Megumi's never done this before, he could never look at Panda-senpai in the eyes again, so on so on- paled in comparison to Toge's joy.
Even if that joy was born from pure mischief, but sadly Megumi was so far gone he didn't even feel disdain anymore when Toge pulled a prank. The most he could muster was a disapproving frown and a shake of his head, but that barely lasted more than a minute when Toge would bound over to hug him afterwards.
So, considering the fact Megumi had shockingly and easily agreed to do this when he literally thinks the idea of pranking as a whole is dumb, stupid, a waste of time, potentially dangerous, hurtful, messy, disrespectful, and something he never wanted to do out of his own volition had to be because he was in love.
Yeah, that made sense. Perhaps it wasn't the most conventional of times to think about it, but it made sense the more he took into account how strongly he felt about Toge, how he'd do anything for him, how he felt like he could spend the rest of his life with him and not regret it for a single second. He had never been in love before, but he was convinced this had to be what it felt like. It was an amazing feeling.
Oddly enough though, it didn't shock him. People often made it sound like an explosion of feelings and raw emotions when they realized they were in love, but right now, to Megumi, it felt natural to say he was in love with Toge after months together, it felt right, it made his heart stutter and it made him feel good. Honestly, it was more surprising he had realized it inside a damn closet in the middle of a prank scheme.
"Salmon cod roe." Toge's quiet whisper broke him out his thoughts, just in time to hear footsteps approaching.
"Man, it sucks Gojo-sensei's making us do a bunch of cleaning but he won't even help us out!"
"Patience, Yuuji! The sooner we start the sooner we’ll be finished and afterwards we can meet up with the others. I was thinking we should order some food as a reward for our hard work."
"Oh, good idea senpai! Alright then, let's get started!"
The voices definitely belonged to Itadori and Panda-senpai, their footsteps grew closer and closer and Megumi knew it was go time.
Besides him, Toge snickered quietly and raised the pie, aiming it directly at the door. Megumi sighed and copied him. He swore if Toge asked this of him again, he was gonna try his hardest to say no. Key word: try.
The footsteps halted just outside the door. As soon as an unsuspecting Itadori opened the closet, Megumi and Toge surged forward and slammed the pies in their faces. Itadori screeched in disgust, Panda-senpai yelped in surprise, they both fell on their behinds, and Toge burst out in laughter before grabbing Megumi's hand and running for the door. Megumi could only wince and keep up with Toge’s fast pace.
Behind them, Itadori yelled. "Argh! Inumaki-senpai! What did we do to deserve this?!"
Panda merely chuckled next to him and licked some whipped cream off his lips. "It looks like he has Megumi on his side now, it's safe to say we're doomed. Pie tastes great though."
By the time they were inside Toge's room, they were a panting mess and Toge was giggling breathlessly. Megumi will probably never understand his sense of humor or how these things were so funny to him, but as long as he got to hear him laugh, it was okay. He watched in amusement as Toge lowered his collar, fell back on the bed, and let out one last giggle, his cheeks were flushed and a bit of sweat covered his forehead but in Megumi's eyes, he looked adorable.
Megumi wiped the minimal sweat off his own forehead and took his shoes off. Assuming (more like hoping) Itadori and Panda-senpai wouldn't follow them, and knowing they had a few hours until they had to clean their own assigned classrooms, Megumi followed Toge's lead and laid down on his side on the comfortable bed. The latter had pulled his phone out and was probably talking about his prank in his group chat with the second years, so Megumi took the chance to throw an arm over Toge's stomach and burrow into the pillows.
He was immediately swept up in Toge's scent, his pillows always smelled like the hair products he used and the sheets like a mix of his soap and cologne. His heartbeat was slowly calming down, it had been a little nerve wracking smacking his friends in the face with pies and he definitely felt on edge, but it hadn't been as bad as he thought.
Was he disappointed in himself he stooped so low and pranked his friend and his senior? Yes. Was he mortified beyond reason and felt like he could never show his face again? Absolutely. Did he regret it? His eyes drifted to Toge in front of him, he was smiling and his eyes were twinkling in delight as he tapped away wildly on the screen. That smile did things to Megumi, so no, he couldn't say he regretted it too much.
As if sensing Megumi's stare, Toge looked at him and somehow smiled wider. He placed his arm over Megumi's own on his stomach and resumed typing on the screen. Megumi briefly enjoyed the way Toge mindlessly caressed the back of his hand before he was shown the phone screen.
'That was so funny! I knew you had it in you, you're a natural prankster. Btw, Yuuji might attempt to prank you back, so watch your back!! :P'
Megumi snorted. "Thanks, glad you had fun. And I'd like to see him try. Besides, this was your idea, if anything you should be on the lookout."
Toge stuck his tongue out playfully and turned back to his phone to type a new response. He quickly showed him the screen again. 'In the words of one Fushiguro Megumi, i'd like to see him try. Besides, i happen to have an amazingly strong and cute boyfriend who will surely protect me from any possible backfire. <3'
Megumi hated that he actually blushed at that. He dropped his head onto Toge's shoulder and groaned in a futile attempt to hide his reddened face, even at this height of their relationship he wasn't used to Toge's honest compliments. Toge laughed and gently ruffled Megumi's wild hair. "Mustard leaf?"
'Did you have fun?'
It was still surprising sometimes how easily Megumi understood him. "I think you're the only one who had fun, but I admit it wasn't that bad."
He could practically hear Toge scheming in his mind. "Tuna tuna?"
'Does that mean you'll help me again?'
Megumi wanted to say no, but who the hell was he kidding, he was powerless against Toge and his puppy dog eyes and shining smiles and god, he was so whipped. "Maybe. Only cause I love you though."
He hadn't even registered what he said until he felt Toge tense. Words and feelings outside the battlefield were never Megumi's strong suit, he would either stay quiet or he'd speak whatever came to mind with no filter, and saying those three little words to Toge just felt right. It felt wonderful, actually, to tell him that and mean it, to feel his insides burst with affection for the cursed speech user, but there was a difference between realizing it and keeping the knowledge to himself and telling Toge not even one hour after literally thinking it. The last thing he wanted was to make Toge uncomfortable or feel like Megumi was going too fast or crossing his boundaries.
Just when he thought about backtracking and apologizing, he felt Toge relax. A sigh that could only be described as loving left his lips and a kiss was placed on the side of Megumi's head. "Tuna mayo."
The way it was so softly and delicately spoken, all tender and fond, left no room for misinterpretation.
'I love you too.'
And if Megumi thought it felt great to relish in his recent discovery, hearing Toge's loving tone reciprocate the same feelings made him feel almost light headed and entirely enamored. He wondered if he's known longer than Megumi or if he had been building up courage to tell him, but it didn't matter, not when Megumi picked his head up slightly to look into those lilac orbs he adored so much before he leaned in for a kiss. Toge closed his eyes and met him halfway, his hands coming up to cup Megumi's cheeks, and Megumi could only kiss him back and let himself drown in the feeling of Toge's cold palms, his soft lips, and his own heart thrumming erratically with love and affection for his boyfriend.
When they separated, Toge's cheeks were red, Megumi's face felt hot, and Toge was smiling so wide his eyes crinkled softly at the edges. Megumi loved seeing him like this, he loved being the cause of Toge's happiness even more. He pecked Toge on the lips one last time before gently taking him into his arms and rolling onto his back, Toge ended up partially splayed over him and wasted no time cuddling into his side.
Thin arms wrapped around Megumi's torso and Toge rested his head on his chest. Megumi ran his hand up the other's back until he reached Toge's soft hair and began playing with the strands, causing Toge to practically melt against him even further.
It was peaceful for a few minutes until Megumi spoke again. "For the record, just cause I said I'd maybe help you again doesn't mean that applies to all of your future pranks. I'll help you with one or two, at most."
A poor attempt at a lie, but it got Toge to laugh so loud Megumi could feel the vibrations against his ribs and that's all that mattered.
