“So? Which are you?” the adeptus asks suddenly, breaking the silence and driving Beidou from her thoughts. He tilts his head to the side. “Pilgrim or madwoman?”
“I like to think neither,” Beidou responds. “Never been too interested in the gods, and I’m still mostly sane.”
“That could change.”
“Which one?”
“Either.”
(In which Beidou meets an adeptus and attempts to understand him, as impossible as that may seem.)

"Beidou has to stop herself from screaming. She jolts back upright, whipping her head from side to side. There, perched on the windowsill like a massive bird, is the adeptus. The moonlight streaming in from behind him glints on his necklace, and Beidou realizes that his eyes reflect it too, like a cat’s. "
