Paper Rings

Summary:

When the occasion finally arose, Jeonghan grabbed the chance to give it a go.

Notes:

I was obsessed with Taylor Swift's Paper Rings that it inspired me to do this small fic! I hope you enjoy soonhan fluff (that we rarely get here on ao3)

Work Text:

If you ask Jeonghan what are the three things he loved about Soonyoung, he'd go on a frenzy.

To say that three was enough to adore his boyfriend was crazy, that was too little!

But of course, he'd comply. Afterall, he can still talk about Soonyoung. Why pass on a chance like that?

The first thing he'd say is how Jeonghan loves watching Soonyoung sleep.

No, not in a creepy way and most definitely not even in a weird way. Its just he does admit that he indeed loves watching his beloved in slumber.

It is during one of the days where Soonyoung slept in, for once Jeonghan was the one who woke up first so naturally he took the initiative to start the day for the both of them. With Soonyoung still in school on his last year of law school whilst Jeonghan finally graduated and within his fresh graduate year, he's able to work under an architectural firm with a good salary.

Let's say it was enough to buy a four storey house.

And so he did, the first thing he bought with his first salary was a small, simple house for him and of course, for Soonyoung.

He was proud and happy, they finally could leave Soonyoung's small, stuffy, and cramped dorm.

Soonyoung finally had so much room for more of his books, being a law student was really hard and Jeonghan knew his boyfriend needed the space that his old dorm could not provide.

And now he's finally given him that, with all Soonyoung's wishes for Jeongan not to went unheard, he had no choice but to go with Jeonghan.

Successfully convincing his boyfriend, Jeonghan is relishing the fact that he and his boyfriend finally live under one lovely home.

However it was Soonyoung who is usually the one to start the day by waking up Jeonghan with small morning kisses, later on the latter wakes up and tries to convince his boyfriend to stay in.

Soonyoung rarely sleeps in.

Soonyoung is known to be hyper, he talks and moves a lot, he loves to play a lot (which is one of the things he loves about him but did not make it to the top three), seeing him sleep is like meeting a new side.

When he slept, Soonyoung was calm, quiet. Something he won't encounter when he's awake. Though as much as how much he loves having banters with his boyfriend, he loves how one can be so comfortable and vulnerable around him.

"Stop staring, Yoon." Soonyoung says quietly as he stretches, Jeonghan laughs.

"Who says I was?!"

"Liar." Soonyoung laughs as he buries his head more onto Jeonghan's chest.

Jeonghan laughs, as much as he wants to tease the other, he just couldn't help but accept his boyfriend's affection.

"Good morning to you too, angel." Jeonghan whispers as he showers Soonyoung's head with kisses.

"Mhm, good morning, love," He says back. "Can we stay in?"

Jeonghan frowns.

"I'd love to but.. It's Friday, so I have to clock in.." He says sadly. Jeonghan could feel the frown on his face and he can't help but feel his heart ache.

"I'm sorry, angel, I used up all of my leaves."

"It's alright. Come on, I'll prepare you your lunch." Soonyoung stands up but Jeonghan pulls him back down.

He kisses him deeply, cupping his boyfriend's fluffy cheeks as he feels the latter wrap his hands around his neck.

After a couple seconds, Soonyoung's laugh bubbles which lead to Jeonghan having a smile on his face.

"You forgot my morning kiss."

"It's because I'm upset," Soonyoung sighs. "I finally have my day off from school but you're off to work."

"Mhm, I know.. How about I make it up to you?"

"It's fine, love. I understand anyway, I'll just see you tonight."

"No no, we'll have fun when I get home alright?" Jeonghan winks and Soonyoung's ears were red.

"You dog!"

And that morning was filled with giggles until Jeonghan left for work and Soonyoung went back to sleep.

The second thing he loves about Soonyoung is how mad he can get.

On the majority of days, Soonyoung's company is a breeze; fun to be with, he's a person that can never get tired of talking about the things he loves, he's the epitome of sunshine and happiness.

It's lovely, Jeonghan would always be drawn to that.

But they also have a fair share of bad days, or where Soonyoung is obviously upset.

Between the two of them, it's Jeonghan who's known to nag a lot; having to take care of a manchild (he loves him though), it can be difficult and scary.

But when it's Soonyoung's turn to be mad, Jeonghan can compare it to hell breaking loose.

It was when Jeonghan forgot his keys, it was a big night out from the firm and he may or may not have told Soonyoung about his plans. All Soonyoung knows is he'll be attending a company dinner.

But things got out of hand, one thing led to another, and the next thing he knew he's heading home in a zigzag-y, wobbly walk.

Jeonghan tries to feel his keys and his heart drops, his plan of sneaking in is out the window and he's forced to face the wrath of his beloved.

He was about to die tonight.

He then found himself, sobered up, sitting on their couch with knees together as well as his hands resting on his lap. Soonyoung rambled and rambled while pacing back and forth in the comfort of their living room.

"You were out drinking?! For God's sake, Jeonghan! We're taking a long long drive home tomorrow and you agreed that you'd take the first half! How are we going to leave first thing in the morning when you're here all drunk at 2 AM?!" Soonyoung says, voice raised but not too loud for the neighbors to hear.

"Soonie.."

"Don't call me Soonie!" He looks at him with wide eyes full of upset emotions.

Soonyoung sighs, rubbing his temples, his hands dropping down.

"You know how hard it is for me to get out of work, Jeonghan. I had to work extra shifts, and did extra paperwork in my firm." Soonyoung stops pacing as he faces Jeonghan.

"I'm really looking forward to this trip with you. I know you don't want to go but at least have the decency to tell me that you don't want to so I wouldn't insist!" Soonyoung exclaims, then walks out.

Jeonghan didn't miss the way Soonyoung abruptly wiped a tear away from his face.

Soonyoung slams the door of their bedroom and he flinches. His heart sank, seeing his beloved like this is something he hates so much. What he hates more is he is the reason behind it.

Soonyoung was right though, it took him weeks of convincing before agreeing to go on the trip. Jeonghan was really devoted to his job, he couldn't see an opening to get out. But then he agreed because Soonyoung wasn't doing well with homesickness, he knows how much he misses his family.

Ever since Soonyoung graduated, he was recruited at a local law firm and he was doing really well. He had less and less time to go home and it was really taking a toll on him.

It even got to the point where Soonyoung was determined to go home alone. Out of fear for him taking a four hour drive alone, Jeonghan finally agreed, being the overprotective boyfriend that he is, took a couple days off in order to escort his lovely boyfriend.

Though he could've done better. And now his boyfriend is upset because of his irresponsibility.

He stood up quietly and walked towards their shared room and he heard his boyfriend’s quiet sniffs.

"Mom.." His boyfriend says quietly.

"My baby, what made you call in the middle of the night? Are you crying?"

"Ah no.." Soonyoung giggles a little, lying to his mother. "I don't think we can go down there.."

"Oh no, Why? Oh Soonie, we really were expecting you. You know Taehyun is expecting you as well, right? We miss you and Jeonghan so much, dear."

A pang of guilt washed over Jeonghan, feeling bad that Soonyoung's mom was upset too.

"Well.. Work is really bad right now and I have a lot of cases at hand that I should finish asap. I miss Taehyunnie too, is he growing up well?" Soonyoung answers.

"My son, ever so hardworking. Don't overwork yourself, baby! We'll wait for you and Jeonghan to come home, alright? I miss you both. Taehyunnie, despite being your sister's son, is a lot like you." His mother giggles as the two continue with their conversation for another hour.

Jeonghan presses his lips in a tight line, and then he sighs.

The clock strikes 6, after taking a three hour shut eye, he prepares all the things needed. He took their bags that were prepared by the door to the car, washed his face and drank coffee and ate breakfast to make sure he's awake and alert and would be for the next two hour drive.

He took a cold bath to wake his senses again, dressed up and looked around him if he's missing some things.

When he sees they're all set, he takes the key to their bedroom and gently unlocks it to see his beautiful boyfriend fast asleep with tear stains on his cheeks.

A pang of hurt warms his chest, but he can apologize later. They had to go now if they wanted to be at Soonyoung's hometown by lunch.

"Angel.." He says softly, caressing his cheek.

"Wake up, Angel! We have to hit the road now.."

A little more waking up, finally Soonyoung's puffy eyes flutter open and his eyebrows knitted together.

He's still upset but Jeonghan has to endure the guilt. Afterall, it's his fault.

"What do you mean, we're not going anywhere with your state."

"Honey, I'm all sobered up the moment you opened the door last night." Jeonghan tried to joke but to no avail, Soonyoung just rolled on the other side.

"Just go back to sleep and leave me alone."

"Angel.."

"I'm upset, Jeonghan. You know how this will turn out." He mumbles.

"Baby I know." Jeonghan whispers, laying down beside his lover as he hugs him from behind. "That's why I'm sorry. I'm sorry I didn't tell you, I'm sorry I drank more than I can handle. I'm sorry for breaking my promise, I'm sorry for upsetting you."

"I have no excuses, Angel. But let me make it up to you. Everything is all set, all we have to do is get you ready and hit the road."

After Jeonghan's speech, he hoped for the best. He knows Soonyoung wouldn't feel delighted in a short time, but at least he wants to let him know that he knows what he did and he's sorry.

So he waited until Soonyoung pulled him in for a hug.

"I love you." Soonyoung whispers as he cries.

"I'm sorry if I was mean a while ago, I just wanted to push through with going home. I should've considered your feelings." He confesses and Jeonghan frowns.

"No." He says as he made Soonyoung look at him.

"Hey, I was totally in the wrong, okay? I told you, you can be upset. You don't have to hide how you feel."

"I shouldn't have lashed out. I shouldn't have gotten mad." Soonyoung continued to apologize.

"Being upset is alright, you getting mad would always put me in my place. If you didn't have this attribute to you, I'd still be the thick skinned, stubborn man you've met 10 years ago." Jeonghan giggles, leaning his forehead on the crown of his boyfriend’s head.

"We don't have to push through, love." He says sadly.

"We have to." The other insists.

"But you-"

"I can handle it. You know how I am after drinking right? I don't get any hangovers, at this point I can even do a 12-hour drive." Jeonghan says which is true, one of his talents is not feeling hungover after a night out. That is why he's usually the one in charge of taking care of Soonyoung when they go a little wild with drinks the night before.

"Let's just leave after lunch? Let's get some sleep first. I don't want to die with an idiot." Soonyoung laughed quietly and Jeonghan didn't resist as Soonyoung pulled him closer.

Afterall, he’s glad to take any cuddle opportunities his boyfriend offers after making him upset.

"Alright, angel." Jeonghan says, kissing the boy softly on the lips, followed by another, and another, and another until Soonyoung ducks and hits his forehead.

"I'm still upset with you, you know. You don't deserve any kisses right now."

"Oh I know, it's you who deserves it that is why I'm giving it to you." Jeonghan smiles cheekily as he basked in the presence of his beloved on a saturday morning.

And finally the third one, he loves how simple Soonyoung is.

He never boasts, never tries to ask for more than what he has. Soonyoung is as simple as a yes or no question, which Jeonghan finds so endearing. Jeonghan remembers how their first date went; he usually goes big especially on first dates, splurging what he can. Maybe a road trip, an out of the country adventure, expensive dinners, you name it.

However what he had with Soonyoung was.. different.

Soonyoung and Jeonghan knew each other before college, being his senior by one year, they were well acquainted due to school activities. So Soonyoung really knew who Jeonghan was, but Jeonghan took a liking to the other first.

He found him interesting, especially at that time when they were planning for the school's valentine's day event. Jeonghan, being your rich president of the student council, would love to go all out but this certain secretary said otherwise.

"I don't care if you have the money, Jeonghan-ssi, how could you spend a day of love with such material things? I believe that we can go for a simpler event, but meaningful and would really pull the heartstrings of everyone," Soonyoung, his junior, said leaving Jeonghan's mouth dry. That was the first time someone actually stood up against his plans, especially on events.

"Love isn't about money or how grand it is, you know. So I would really support you if you choose something else that wouldn't shake up our budget."

Leading to them meeting again on university campus during freshman week, Soonyoung was about to attend a freshman party when he got lost, looking both left and right. He then saw a man in front of him who wore a yellow wristband, signifying that he was a sophomore. So he approached him, not knowing it was Jeonghan.

And from there, due to familiarity's sake, they had a better relationship which then lead to Jeonghan acting on his lingering feelings since high school, finally asking the younger for a date.

"Come on, just one date and if it doesn't work out I promise I-”

"Okay." Soonyoung said softly, facing the man who kept bugging him, but Jeonghan missed it, as he continued to run his mouth.

"And I will never ask you again if it goes-"

"I said okay, Jeonghan-ssi." Soonyoung repeats and Jeonghan shuts up, finally realizing what the younger said.

Did he.. Just..?

"What..?" Jeonghan asks dumbly, earning a hearty laugh from Soonyoung.

"I'll pick you up at seven, wear something that you usually wear everyday, casual, nothing special." He explained and Jeonghan felt his brain short circuit. The next thing he knows he’s seeing Soonyoung walking away with a big smile on his face.

"See you later!" Jeonghan was left there, trying to process what just happened.

True to his words, by 7:30 PM they were walking around town, Soonyoung leading him towards this small shop just a couple of blocks from their university.

Their first date.. was in a small and simple restaurant, food was nothing too fancy, drinks were cola and not wine.

What?

Jeonghan promised he could've done better, he really wanted to impress his long-time crush with something amazing and grand.

But as if Soonyoung read his mind, he spoke.

"I picked the place because I know you'd do something crazy again." He giggles, taking a bite of his food.

"And I would, you wanna get out of here? There's this restauran-"

"Jeonghan-ssi, you’ve really never changed, no?" Soonyoung laughed and the other scoffed.

"I just want you to have a memorable first date ever, okay? You don't even know what to expect from a date since you don't date!" Jeonghan accuses him as the other rolls his eyes.

"Yeah sure, but I tell you, Yoon Jeonghan, if you want this relationship to work, you gotta step down from your high horse." He shrugs and Jeonghan huffs but he calms down, sitting back down.

As if quoting himself from a couple years ago, Soonyoung says, "Love isn't really about grand things, but how you pull one's heartstrings."

And years later, Soonyoung really did well on humbling Jeonghan. He learned how to take things easily, know when to spend so much or when to not. Life is better when it's simple, Soonyoung is right (when was he ever wrong?!).

Jeonghan now found himself sitting on the floor of their bedroom, doing origami, something the couple loved to do during their past time.

The former watched his boyfriend babble about hearts while folding up one, laughing and giggling at the things he's saying. He's so beautiful, Jeonghan thinks, shrugging off the nervous feelings he's having.

"I actually learned this balloon heart so give me a couple minutes and.." Soonyoung drifts off and he focuses on folding again.

Jeonghan took this as a signal to start folding.

"Bet you dinner, the first one to finish is buying take out?" Jeonghan introduces the idea and the other thinks before smiling brightly.

"Bring it on Yoon, you're so bad at things like this then asking me to a competition? You're digging your grave." Soonyoung laughs mischievously, having the other shrugging.

So they fold, fold, fold, and fold until Soonyoung screams in victory, having his balloon heart on his hand.

"I told you!"

"Well at least let me finish folding!" Jeonghan shouts under pressure and Soonyoung laughs.

Jeonghan takes a shaky breath, finishing the origami and he takes a look at his boyfriend who is starting over again with a new one.

This was it.

"Hey angel, will you look at me first?" He says and the other looks up.

The face he loves so much faces him, he smiles and he leans down to give him a quick peck and the other giggles at the affection.

"You know, angel, recently I’ve been thinking how nice it would be to actually seal the deal, no?” Jeonghan swallows a lump on his throat as the younger man tilts his head in confusion.

God, Jeonghan, just get it over already!

So he clears his throat, fiddling with the small origami in his hand.

“We’ve been together for years now. It got to the point where I can’t actually imagine a life without you. Like even all possible parallel universes, I doubt there even is one without you, without us. So I want to do this in this parallel universe,” Jeonghan finishes before kneeling and Soonyoung’s eyes bulge.

“I know you’d nag me again on going for simple things if I got you something that would seem like its way out of our budget, but Soonie believe me when I say I can actually afford the world for you,” He giggles softly, caressing his lovers cheek that was now wet from tears.

“I spent days thinking how I should do this, and this beautiful idea popped in. Our favorite pastime, having origami scattered around the room..” He exhales as he gathers himself.

“So Kwon Soonyoung, with this little paper ring on my hand, will you accept my-”

“God, yes!” Soonyoung leaped onto Jeonghan as he hugged him so tight as if he’s going to slip from his hold.

“You didn’t even need to give me your corny speech, ask me to marry you and I’d say yes in a damn heartbeat.” Soonyoung says in between sobs as Jeonghan laughs, kissing the other man’s cheeks, not minding the salty taste from his tears.

“It's the least I can do, Soonie. I don’t have any diamond ring now..” And Soonyoung laughs

“Give me all of your days, your years even, Yoon Jeonghan. I’d accept all of them, I’d accept you. Let’s get married.” Soonyoung said softly as Jeonghan felt his heart flutter.

At this point, it was Jeonghan’s turn to start crying as he held his lover’s face and gave him a slow, loving kiss. Words, nor actions, can never explain how thankful he is to have Soonyoung in his life.

It was the most perfect moment in his life, of all days, this was his favorite.

When they finally separated, Soonyoung already stopped crying as he sniffed quietly, planting small kisses on Jeonghan’s face.

“Let’s get married, my angel.”
