Summary
At five years old, Josh used to love watching Joanie paint her fingernails. He remembers sitting up on his knees on a wobbly wooden chair at their wobbly kitchen table, elbows on the table and head in his hands, his eyes wide and curious as he watched her paint her nails with a focus he had only ever seen her apply to playing piano.
Joanie’s look of intense concentration, her eyes narrowed and her tongue peeking out between her teeth, is one that’s still seared into his brain even now, more than thirty years after he lost her.
