Summary
The Ship of Theseus is a thought experiment that asks the question of whether an object that has had all of its parts replaced remains fundamentally the same object. Tommy doesn't know enough about ships to care, and he's too busy trying to choose what college to attend to even think about his old name.
It also doesn't help that he's forced to visit his family again after five years.

When Tommy is 8, he goes to stay with his Uncle Sam for the Summer. One Summer turns to two, then three. And then Tommy stops going back home altogether.
Returning 'home' to the Antarctic Empire after 5 years of not seeing his family forces Tommy to confront the ways in which he has changed, and the ways he hasn't.
