“Unless you have something you have to do?” Ajax seemed to have followed his line of sight, looking pointedly at the sheet of tasks on Bennett's desk. Bennett weighed his options carefully. He was being offered an out, though it could barely be considered as such with how charming and expectant Ajax’s smile was. There was hope in his smile, a questioning tone that assumed he wouldn’t be turned down. One of those performative, ‘I know what you need to do but what I want is more important to me so I’ll give you an out but I might make you look like an asshole for taking it’ smiles. The sort of smile that guided Bennett’s life.
From Ajax’s perfectly coiffed hair down to his spotless new sneakers, Bennett was quite sure that he was looking at the very antithesis to his identity.
