Summary
Armin feels his face twist into a snarl briefly, but when he looks at Eren, his eyes catch on his and Mikasa’s tangled hands. Hers are squirming under his grip, and then pull against her stomach in a gesture that makes Armin dizzy for a moment. He sees again that line of red, but—it’s not blood.
When he sees what it actually is, he almost wishes it was.
“‘M fine,” Mikasa says. Her breath is coming too fast, too shallow. “Just—cold…”Eren’s eyes shine with wonder, locked on their joint hands and what’s below them; the red spilling out from the gaps in her buttons.
That is not right, Armin thinks, gut churning. That shouldn’t be happening.
But at the same time, isn’t that just the same old story?***
Eren lives, and what comes after.

Beautiful. Stunning. The prose in this is mouthwateringly visceral. Eren & Mikasa’s relationship is so wonderfully depicted in this. The conflict Mikasa has with how she’d be complicit in Genocide by remaining with Eren is such a realistic gripe to have with the situation & I appreciate how the author handles it. The emotional intimacy the duo have is like, ridiculously charged with such a complex dynamic they have due to their circumstances that it creates really unique character interactions.
Eren. Hoooo boy. He’s an actual dumpster fire, but his obsessive love is definitively real for good or ill. Getting to see him act as the Leader of a Nation is quite interesting, especially with how we have other POV’s looking in at Eren & making their own judgements of him.
Love how the Warriors & Co. Armin are depicted in this even if they’re definitively not the main focus. Armin’s relationship with Eren is honestly so realistic with how a successful Rumbling would’ve played out in my opinion.
Historia’s great in this. I love seeing how she’s so unapologetic in the fact she is selfish, despite her not having 100% positive feelings on the Rumbling unlike most people who supported Eren. Seeing her try to move on with her life after all of this is really interesting, especially as the trauma rears its ugly head back up consistently.
Ok. Floch. He’s- like. Actually amazing in this. He’s not like, blind to Eren’s faults but still respects him with a deep reverence akin to a Zealot. Floch has good points about Mikasa & Eren’s relationship, and genuinely tries to be supportive for Eren’s emotional health and shows actual concern towards Eren with him even being an open ear to Eren’s struggles & ill mental health whilst fending off things that could hurt Eren’s happiness such as the population talking negatively about Mikasa.
