Lexi replies, “I’m here as a client.”
Fez’s expression shutters, and he studies her with a carefully blank gaze. “A client,” he repeats, like he’s making sure, surveying her from head to toe. It should make her uncomfortable, shifty on her feet; it just makes her kind of singe and burn with desire, as always. “This ain’t the fuckin’ stationery store.”
“I’ve been here before, Fezco,” she says, rolling her eyes. “But this time it’s different. I’m here to get something and leave, like everyone else does.”
“Somethin’ like what?”
“Adderall.”
He mouths the word to himself, his lips moving silently (and Lexi wants to kiss him. Wants to know what his mouth feels like against her skin, what words he would whisper into her neck—). Then, “Fuck.”
“I have the money,” says Lexi, even though she knows that’s not the issue at all. It’s more how Fez is looking at her like she’s something he’s already mourning.
or, lexi's a private school girl, and everybody knows private school girls are bad (but she's pretty sure none of them fall in love with their drug dealers).

still on chapter one, starting after the interlude with "finals come and they go," (afterwards there are lines divided by dots??? whats the englosh word awwh) extract with it that migh be easier to find:
Wordlessly, Lexi takes Eurydice back with her to the couch and sits down; Rue’s legs immediately fall onto her lap. Fez glances at her, then at the book, and he asks, “What d’you think?”
What does she think? Her brain’s kind of scrambled, kind of rewiring itself, because she still doesn’t like that there’s a section of her phone’s Notes app devoted to Rue’s oxy intake, but she likes the blue-eyed boy who takes care of his kid brother and the hyper teenager he’s taking on as a surrogate little sister. She’s thinking that she hates how the world isn’t clear shades of black and white anymore. She’s thinking she wants Fezco to be her first kiss but also she wishes she hadn’t met him, wishes he never even existed.
Out loud, she only says, “You’ve got good taste.” She averts her gaze when Fezco smiles, staring at Rue’s Pooh-patterned socks while Vivian and Edward watch La traviata on the TV screen.
Finals come and go. Lexi gets through them with copious amounts of coffee and Red Bull and half a dozen panic attacks, but at least her transcripts for her first year of high school are stellar and Yale-worthy. Her mom hangs a copy of them on the fridge, right next to Cassie’s brand new diet plan, and Lexi pushes the Chilton uniform to the back of her closet.
Summertime doesn’t make her living that easy, mostly because Lexi’s anxiety increases exponentially when she doesn’t have a set structure to her life. She’s somewhat disoriented every June before she finds her footing, only this year her constant fixtures are different:
Filippa is in Santa Fe. It’s something she does every summer, apparently, only this year neither of her parents are braving the family beach house so it’s just Pip and her thoughts. “And the boys,” she adds, trying to cajole Lexi into maybe visiting her for a week in July, but Lexi’s refusal is staunch on the grounds of her worrying about leaving her mom and sister alone, with no one to turn Suze on her side when she passes out on the couch and no one to keep the bedroom door unlocked for Cassi
