Nesta liked to think she was strong. She was strong, and she would not break. Had never broken, but she found that she was brittle and on the verge of breakdown now. How weak she had become. Her mother would be turning in her grave if she saw her eldest daughter now, slumped over a wooden barstool and clutching a glass mug of muddy liquid.
There was the coppery tang of blood on her lips, and Nesta startled to find her lips bitten and bloody. She decided she didn’t care. Couldn’t bring herself to dredge up any shred of anger, any shred of emotion at all. She brought her mug to her lips. The sting of beer meeting her lips did not bother her. Nothing did, at this point, she supposed. The alcohol and men were just ways to make her feel something again.
Anything to feel again.
