George was no devil. He liked to poke at John—prod at him, bring him out of his shell—josh and tease and tell long rambling stories with uncertain morals but he was not, could not be the sort of agent of Satan whom John had long feared would come along and tip him once and for all into perdition. John was sure he would know that man when he saw him: his nature would be unmistakable.
No, the only soul at fault here was John; the only evil here was his own. He had been lax with his devotions, thinking himself too happily content to need them. He had not felt himself about to fall.
